Make a Fresh Commitment to Christ Jesus and His Mission to the World

Reenlistment Sunday

Day of Pentecost - Sunday, June 9 8:00 and 10:30 am

In a recent sermon, I made mention of how much of the

mainline contemporary Church has shied away from

images of itself deemed to be militaristic. I mentioned that

“Onward, Christian Soldiers” cannot be found in our

newest hymnal, and that favorites such as “Lift High the

Cross” and “For All the Saints” have been altered so as to

lessen their military language.

But, I find it interesting that The Salvation Army continues

as is, complete with the uniforms worn by their leaders. A

denomination unto itself, The Salvation Army is better

known for the relief and social services work it does for the

sake of those in need. Like so much of how Christians

represent themselves to the world, a little explaining is

warranted.

We cannot sidestep the military imagery. The hymn,

“Stand up, Stand up for Jesus” encourages us to “put on the

Gospel armor.” It’s a pretty obvious reference to the

admonition we find in Ephesians 6: “Put on the whole

armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the

wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of

blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the

authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present

darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly

places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that

you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having

done everything, to stand firm.” I remember a New

Testament professor at seminary telling us students, “We

are at war,” and he was dead serious about it.

And, note that we read, “For our struggle is not against

enemies of blood and flesh.” Jesus tells us, instead, to pray

for our enemies. The Speaker of the House was recently

quoted as saying she prays for the President and for our

country. One hopes more of this takes place in Washington

with the hope of ending the demonization of the opposite

site in matters of disagreement.

Rather, we are at war with the demonic forces behind all

this. Belief in the devil isn’t particularly popular these

days, but it is hard to understand the way of the world

apart from an antichrist, a force for evil against which

God’s faithful do battle daily.

But, that battle is not fought “with swords loud clashing,

nor roll of stirring drums.” Instead, what best befuddles

the devil are “deeds of love and mercy.” Ernest Shurtleff

wrote those words as part of the hymn “Lead on, O King

Eternal.” He wrote it for his class to sing at graduation at

Andover Theological Seminary in Massachusetts in 1888.

An Opportunity to RE-UP! DAY OF PENTECOST - SUNDAY, JUNE 9

Is it time to make a new commitment to your Lord and Savior Jesus

On the Sundays of the Easter Season, we have been working our way

through the opportunities for new life in the risen Christ that are ours in

Holy Baptism. Our guide has been language in the order for the

Affirmation of Baptism (or Confirmation). In that order, which we will

employ at both services on June 9, we will re-enlist in the faith and work of

our Lord and His Church by renewing our pledge...:

to live among God’s faithful people,

to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper,

to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed,

to serve all people, following the example of Jesus,

and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?

COME, AND SAY A NEW “YES!” TO OUR LORD!

Come, Join the Dance of Trinity!

Come, celebrate the Name of God, how God is revealed in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

all unique and yet all one. Ninety-three years ago, our congregation came

together under the name “Trinity.” And so, the celebration of The Holy

Trinity on Sunday, June 16, has a two-fold meaning for us!

A son of our congregation, Pastor Timothy Miller, will be with us to

proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. Pastor Tim will be in from Iowa

to celebrate the ninetieth birthday of his mother, Dorothy Miller. Please

come and welcome him.

And, our monthly “Sunday Jam” has been moved to that same Sunday.

Church musician Adele Hoffman and her helpers will lead us in contemporary Christian music

during the Sunday School hour.

It’ll be Father’s Day, also! Start a day of family celebration with your family at Trinity!

They’re Baaaack!

Monarch Butterflies Return to the North Coast

Trinity’s own amateur (which means “for the love of it!”)

lepidopterist (which means butterfly aficionado!) Sally Hershey

reports monarch butterflies are back in the area after wintering in

Mexico. Sally tells us they’re laying eggs in the “migration station”

in her back yard.

Milkweed is a key to drawing these beautiful butterflies. Sally has

planted a patch behind our church building, but it appears deer

may be getting to it. She says she will transplant thriving

milkweed plants to our patch if necessary.

Sally has been a monarch enthusiast for four years now. The City

of Sandusky is not that far behind. Sandusky received designation

as a “Monarch City USA” two years ago, as a sign on Venice Road

attests.

Trinity’s wind spinner in the front yard helps celebrate this marvel

of God’s creation. And, we thank Sally for helping us enjoy and be

part of this natural wonder!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all the Sunday School kids who participated in this year’s “Pennies for Pigs” project through the ELCA World Hunger campaign. This year the kids collected $425.00 which, at $30.00 per pig, is enough to buy 14 pigs to help families in need living in poverty-stricken countries. I’m so proud of all the kids and the amount of money they were able to raise! And a special thanks to all you parents who helped with this project also!

We were also able to collect $294.00 from the selling of the chicks during the Lenten season. At $10.00 for a group of 10 chicks, we were able to purchase 29 groups of chicks for the ELCA World Hunger campaign also.

As our Sunday school classes come to an end for the summer months, I would like to thank the following volunteer teachers for all their time spent preparing and presenting the Bible lessons

and activities for our students. Without their help, our Sunday school wouldn’t be possible. They are Pat Wiedenheft, Shelly Miller, Carrie Killingsworth, Jill Conner, Barb Wobser, Jim Bertsch, and Pastor Gardner. And, I would also like to thank Adele Hoffman for her commitment to the music program during Sunday school. She sure makes our first 15 minutes of Sunday school fun for everyone. We hope you all have a fun and safe summer vacation and we look forward to seeing you all at Sunday School come September!

Prayers for the

Afflicted

When the preacher’s

mischievous daughter took ill,

the faithful looked to the Lord to

heal her.

Daddy took the call from

the Big Guy when I was 10 and

became the pastor of a small

church in Zebulon, North

Carolina.

My mother jumped into

being a preacher’s wife with both

feet while my sister, Katie, and I began the tedious chore of learning how to dress to impress because, as

Mama put it, we were representatives of Daddy. Well, as every good southern woman knows, you don’t

leave your house for worship on a Sunday morning without Lycra on your hips and stockings on your

legs. No, ma’am! So every week Mama bought Sister and me a pair of hose for Sunday service.

One beautiful Sunday morning, I was being unusually unruly and just didn’t want to go to

church. Mama set me straight and changed my mind for me. I dressed and put on the hose I hated so

much. When we got in the car, Mama screamed at me, “Amy Diane, what did you do to your legs?”

I look down and saw that my legs had black and blue splotches all over them and streaks running

down from my knees. I wasn’t in any pain, but something was definitely wrong. I found this an

opportune moment to get out of going to church and back to the coziness of my bed.

“They hurt!” I cried and turned on the waterworks. Mama wheeled into the church parking lot

and sent for Daddy. When he saw the carnage on my legs, he concurred with Mama. Before I knew it I

was being rushed to the emergency room. Daddy returned to the pulpit and announce what was

happening. “Church family, let’s bow our heads and ask God to oversee her care and cure her of this

hideous leg affliction,” he said. And they prayed like nobody’s business.

On the way to the hospital, I was laying it on thick, thinking that I’d soon be sitting like a fat rat

watching cartoons in my jammies. Then mama told me to take my hose off because the doctor would

want to look at my skin. This is where my preteen smarts left me.

I really believed something was wrong with my legs, so it never occurred to me that this would be

the moment of reckoning. I peeled off the stockings, and the streaks and bruises came right off with

them. See, the pantyhose Mama had given me had dye stains and runs. Stretched out, they made my legs

look bruised.

Mama slammed on the brakes and said, “Amy! You’ve known all along there was nothing wrong

with your legs.”

She turned the car around and proceeded to tell me the whole way back to church the myriad

things I was grounded from. When we parked the car, she looked at me and said firmly, “When we walk

in this church you go straight to the pew and sit down. Do not open your mouth.”

“Yes, Mama,” I said.

Meanwhile, Daddy had been leading the church in an urgent prayer vigil for me. When Mama

and I opened the double doors at the back of the sanctuary, everyone stared at us. So, I did what I

thought was the most appropriate thing to do in this situation.

“It’s a miracle!” I yelled and went straight to my pew.

“Well, folks, this truly is an answered prayer. Thank you, Jesus!” Daddy said and then shot me a

look that let me know he knew. I was grounded for a while after that incident, but a least Mama stopped

forcing me to wear hose on Sunday.

Minutes of previous meeting (April 18, 2019) were reviewed. Motion made by Sally to except the minutes as submitted. 2nd by Barb. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s report was reviewed. Motion to approve report made by Barb. 2nd by Sally. Motion passed.

Pastor’s Report: Pastor reported on a unique situation to a funeral he will be doing on May 25. The NWOS is having a “Shared Ministry” gathering on June 12. Pastor will go and would like someone to go with him. Barb will see if it works for her schedule. Pastor Rob Johnson will be here on September 8 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm to do our last CRT meeting. Pastor turned in a bill to Jim from FLAMe requesting $100 for our membership.

Congregational Life – Candy Beatty – There will be no cookies on Sunday, May 19, as no one signed up. Candy passed out a quote from Clearview Tinting to have the 3M Impact Protection put on the south entrance door and the two east entrance doors. The south west multi-panel glass doors were also quoted separately. Sally made a motion to accept the quote for the south and two east doors to have this installed on them. 2nd by Barb. Candy will have them come in and give a short presentation on how it is installed; then it can be scheduled to be done.

Faith Builders – Barb Wobser – The kids and mothers has a good time with the Mother’s Day activities that were provided. The last day of Sunday School will be Sunday, May 19. Classes will start up again in September.

Property – Vacant – New locking doorknobs were installed on the four main outside Sunday school rooms. The gas rate was lowered for the church on a fixed one-year program. The state elevator inspector was in and found an issue to be fixed. American Home Elevator will be in on Monday, May 20, to do this. Carol will look at having Restore come out and pick up an unused piano along with some old folding chairs and tables from the shed. She will see if Norm Stierhoff’s group can move the piano upstairs. New signs for several entrance were approved but will wait to install until after Clearview has been in to do the 3M film.

Witness and Welcome – Sally Warner – Sally reported a concern of coffee and sugary drinks being taken into the sanctuary. Carol will post some announcements in the bulletin and newsletter about not doing this. We may need to post some signs at the fellowship/cookie area.

Worship and Music – Daniel Schlick – n/a. Pastor reported that the Worship 101 meeting was well-attended. There will be a June Worship and Music meeting. Sally will work on an amendment to the by-laws that any member wishing to run for a council seat must first be a member in good standing with the church for two years prior to being eligible.

Old Business – Personnel policy will be updated and passed out to council prior to June’s meeting so all can review by then and bring comments to the meeting. Pastor will see if we have a real estate lawyer, we can contact about how critical it is to update the church name on the deeds. The old name is Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of Venice Ohio. The new is Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sandusky Ohio. Mike Markley will have some proposals for the gathering space upstairs for the June meeting. Pastor stated that he currently does the council agenda. This should be a function of the council president.

New Business – Sally brought to our attention that Jim opens the church on Sunday mornings around 6:30 – 6:45 am and then goes home to get ready for church. This leaves the building open with next to no one around for almost an hour. Is there a better way to handle this? The church facility use rental needs to be updated to state that no pets (except approved service animals) are allowed in the building. The meeting minutes that are printed in the monthly newsletter will be marked that they are “unapproved”.
