1 Measuring principle

VEGABAR 51

The sensor element for measuring ranges up to 60 bar is the CERTEC®

measuring cell with rugged ceramic diaphragm. The hydrostatic pressure

of the product or the process pressure causes a capacitance change in

the measuring cell via the metal process diaphragm and the isolating

system. This change is converted into a corresponding output signal.

The sensor element for measuring ranges from 100 bar is a wire strain

gauge (DMS) on the back side of the process diaphragm. There, the

process pressure causes a resistance change, which is converted into

an appropriate output signal.

VEGABAR 52, 54

The sensor element is the CERTEC® measuring cell with flush, abrasion

resistant ceramic diaphragm. The hydrostatic pressure of the medium or

the process pressure causes a capacitance change in themeasuring cell

via the diaphragm. This change is converted into an appropriate output

signal.

3 Base element

The CERTEC® measuring cell is also equipped with a temperature sen-

sor.The temperature value canbedisplayed via the indicatingandadjust-

ment module or processed via the signal output.

VEGABAR 52, 54 - climate compensated

The sensor element is an encapsulated CERTEC® absolute pressure

measuring cell with front-flush, abrasion-resistant ceramic diaphragm.

The hydrostatic pressure of the medium or the process pressure causes

a capacitance change in the measuring cell via the ceramic diaphragm.

This capacitance change is converted into an electrical signal, checked

against an integrated reference pressure measurement and outputted as

measured value via the output signal.

VEGABAR 53

The process pressure acts on the sensor element via the stainless steel

diaphragm. The process pressure causes a resistance change which is

converted into a corresponding output signal and outputted asmeasured

value.

For measuring ranges up to 16 bar, a piezoresistive sensor element with

internal transmission liquid is implemented, for measuring ranges from

25 bar, a strain gauge (DMS) sensor element on the back side of the

stainless steel diaphragm (dry).

VEGABAR 55

The METEC® measuring cell is the measuring unit. It consists of the

ceramic-capacitive CERTEC® measuring cell and a special, tempera-

ture-compensating isolating system.

The hydrostatic pressure of the product or the process pressure causes a

capacitance change in the measuring cell via the metallic process dia-

phragm and the isolating liquid. This change is converted into a corre-

sponding output signal.

6 Mounting

Mounting positionThe instruments function in any installation position. But the installation

position can influence the measurement, depending on the measuring

system. This can be compensated by a position correction.

It is useful to select an installation position you can easily reach formount-

ing and connecting as well as later retrofitting of an indicating and adjust-

ment module. For this purpose, the housing can be rotated by 330° with-

out the use of any tools. You can also install the indicating andadjustment

module in four different positions (each displaced by 90°).

Mounting examplesThe following illustrations show mounting examples and measurement

setups.

Reaction vessel

Fig. 7: Level measurement in reaction vessel with VEGABAR 51

VEGABAR 51 can be also used under high temperatures. The instrument

measures the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid column independent of

foam on the product surface. Its advantages are the high resistance dia-

phragm materials and the low oil volume of the isolating diaphragm.

Hence the temperature influence of the isolating diaphragm is kept low.

Drinking water network

Fig. 8: Pressure measurement on the drinking water network with VEGABAR 52

Thewater pressure in drinkingwater networks is continuouslymonitored.

Because pumping stations are often situated in remote areas, there is a

great demand for maintenance free, reliable measurement technology.

The VEGABAR 52 pressure transmitter meets these requirements. With

its robust ceramic CERTEC® measuring cell, VEGABAR 52 is the best

choice for monitoring pressure in pipeline systems.

Chemical pump

Fig. 9: Dry run protection on a chemical pump with VEGABAR 53

TheVEGABAR53pressure transmitterwithpiezoresistivemeasuringcell

andmetal diaphragm is deployed as dry run protection system for chem-

ical pumps. Its strengths are the small, front-flush process fitting, also for

small tube diameters, as well as the chemically resistant process dia-

phragm.

Storage tower

Fig. 10: Level measurement on storage towers with VEGABAR 54

In thepaper industry, the prepared stock is stored in large storage towers.

Level measurement in the lower section prevents the agitator from run-

ningdry.For thispurpose, theVEGABAR54pressure transmitterwithball

valve fitting is used. The advantages are: front-flush mounting in the ball

valve fitting, mounting and dismounting without emptying the storage

tower.

VEGABAR 55 pressure transmitters are particularly suitable for hydro-

static level measurement of hot bitumen. The special configuration of its

metalMETEC®measuringcell ensures temperature decouplingbetween

process fitting and electronics and thus enables application up to 200 °C

(392 °F).

7 Electronics - 4… 20mA - two-wire

Configuration of the electronicsThe pluggable electronics is mounted in the electronics compartment of

the instrument and can be exchanged by the user when servicing is re-

quired. The electronics is completely encapsulated to protect against

vibration and moisture.

The terminals for voltage supply as well as the plug with I²C interface for

parameter adjustment are located on the upper side of the electronics.

With thedouble chamberhousing, theseconnectionelementsare located

in the separate connection compartment.

Voltage supplyDepending on the version, the supply voltage and the current signal are

carried on the same two-wire connection cable.

The VEGA power supply units VEGATRENN 149AEx, VEGASTAB 690,

VEGADIS 371 as well as VEGAMET signal conditioning instruments are

suitable for power supply. When one of these instruments is used, a

reliable separation of the supply circuits from themains circuits according

to DIN VDE 0106 part 101 is ensured for the sensor.

Connection cableConnection is made with screened cable according to Profibus specifi-

cation. A cable diameter of 5… 9mmensures the seal effect of the cable

gland.

Make sure that the entire installation is carried out according to the Pro-

fibus specification. In particular, make sure that the termination of the bus

is done with appropriate terminating resistors.

Cable screening and groundingInsystemswithpotential equalisation, connect thecable screendirectly to

groundpotential at the power supply unit, in the connection box andat the

sensor. The screen in the sensor must be connected directly to the inter-

nal ground terminal. The ground terminal outside on the housing must be

connected to the potential equalisation (low impedance).

In systems without potential equalisation, connect the cable screen di-

rectly to groundpotential at the power supply unit and at the sensor. In the

connection box or T-distributor, the screen of the short stub to the sensor

must not be connected togroundpotential or to another cable screen. The

cable screens to the power supply unit and to the next distributor must be

connected to each other and also connected to ground potential via a

ceramic capacitor (e.g. 1 nF, 1500 V). The low frequency potential equal-

isationcurrents are thussuppressed,but theprotectiveeffectagainsthigh

frequency interference signals remains.

11 Operation

11.1 Overview

The sensors can be adjusted with the following adjustment media:

l with indicating and adjustment module

l an adjustment software according to FDT/DTM standard, e.g.

PACTware and PC

and, depending on the signal output, also with:

l A HART handheld (4 … 20 mA/HART)

l The adjustment program AMS (4 … 20 mA/HART and Foundation

Fieldbus)

l The adjustment program PDM (Profibus PA)

l A configuration tool (Foundation Fieldbus)

The enteredparameters are generally saved in the sensor, optionally also

in the indicating and adjustment module or in the adjustment program.

11.2 Adjustment with the indicating and adjust-

ment module PLICSCOM

The pluggable indicating and adjustment module is used for measured

value indication, adjustment and diagnosis with level and pressure sen-

sors. It is equippedwithadisplaywith full dotmatrix aswell as four keys for

adjustment. An integrated background lighting can be adjusted via the

adjustment menu.

Fig. 20: Indicating and adjustment module PLICSCOM

The indicating and adjustment module is integrated in the respective

sensor housing or in the external indicating and adjustment unit. After

mounting, the sensor and the indicating and adjustment module are

splash-proof even without housing cover.

11.3 Adjustment with PACTware

PACTware/DTMIndependent of the respective signal output 4 … 20 mA/HART, Profibus

PA or Foundation Fieldbus, the sensors can be adjusted with PACTware

directly on site. The sensors with signal output 4… 20mA/HART can be

also operated via the HART signal on the signal cable.

A VEGACONNECT interface adapter as well as an instrument driver for

the respective sensor is necessary for adjustment with PACTware. All

currently available VEGA DTMs are included as a DTM Collection with

the current PACTware version on a CD. They can be purchased for a

token fee from the responsible VEGA agency. In addition, this DTM Col-

lection incl. the basic version of PACTware can be downloaded free of

charge from the Internet.

To use the entire range of functions of aDTM, includingproject documen-

tation, aDTM licence is required for that particular instrument family. This

licence can be bought from the VEGA agency serving you.
