Since 2009 Uponor has been present in the Indian market – with growing

success. This is certainly due to Uponor’s holistic conceptual approach

to solving problems. We off er our customers one-stop service: concept,

complete design and technical support for installation, commissioning

and operation.

During the past few years we have been able to realize challenging

projects in various regions of the country. From Delhi to Trivandrum and

from Mumbai to Arunachal Pradesh. From relatively small solutions up

to buildings with an area of about 200,000 sq.ft . – the climatic conditions

in India always play a central role. We rise to these challenges and off er

tailor-made and sustainable solutions. You may fi nd a selection of projects

realized by us in this brochure. Should you have any questions concerning

the buildings described herein, do not hesitate to contact us.

We look forward to talk with you!

Uponor Radiant Cooling Solutions

Uponor Systems

What is Radiant Cooling?

Traditionally, radiant systems have been used for heating by circulating a heated fl uid through the building structure. The radiant energy trans-fer is caused by a warm surface giving up its heat to a cooler surface (your body). It only turns into heat when it contacts a cooler surface. Radiant cooling works very much the same way, except the heat transfer is in the opposite direction. Instead of a heated fl uid, a chilled fl uid is circulated through PEXa pipes located in the slab/ceiling/fl oor/walls/false ceiling panels. Heat will fl ow from human beings, objects, equipment and lights to a cooled surface.

Radiant Cooling and Air Conditioning

The major diff erence between radi-ant cooling and air conditioning is the heat transport mechanism. Air conditioning uses air distribution as a medium of heat transfer to remove the sensible, latent and fresh air loads. A radiant system uses water as a medium of heat transfer to cool the building mass and thus cater to the sensible load. Sup-plementary air conditioning shall remove the latent and fresh air load.

IITM, PuneA LIV ING E X AMPLE OF AN ENERGY STUSTAINABLE BUILDING

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is responsible for research on the Ocean-Atmosphere Climate System.

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology is a renowned research institute for weather and climate research. An institute that does research on global climate change also relies on modern construction technology.

In an area of 13,380 sq. ft . 18,000 m of Uponor PE-Xa pipes have been installed in the slab and the ground fl oor. By doing so, this building houses one of India's few TAB-Sys-tems.

The system is designed to achieve a comfortable indoor temperature by installing Uponor radiant cooling on the ground fl oor and Uponor TAB system in the 1st and 2nd fl oors. Cold water, which is circulat-ing in the pipes, cools the slab mass and reduces the radiant sur-face temperature of the fl oor and the ceiling.

Cooled air is supplied to each occu-pied area in the offi ce wing at lower than the ambient temperature and

The combination of the fl ywheel eff ect of the TABS, pre-cooling of air and a non-refrigerant based air conditioning system has made this building diff erent.

is directed on to the occupants with adequate velocity for air quality and thermal comfort levels. Masonry ducting from below the ground up to each fl oor is used. The return air from the cooled area fl ows into the central atrium and gets exhaust-ed from the top most part of the building, using natural convection through temperature diff erence (Stack eff ect).

With this system the operative temperature is maintained below 25 °C, except during monsoon when the operative temperature can drift up to 27 °C.

St.Mark’s Sr. Sec. Public School, Meera Bagh, New Delhi

The school motto ’Loyalty,Truth and Honour’ conveys the school’s expectations of the students.

Learning for life in a pleasant and stimulating environment. This can be experienced now by the pupils of the St. Mark’s Senior Secondary Public School, Meera Bagh. Sit-uated in the heart of New Delhi, this school is the fi rst in India to have a radiant cooling system.

The school auditorium, which has a seating capacity for 250 children and a high lighting load during its functional period, was equipped with our system. The Uponor radi-ant cooling system is designed with appropriate pipe spacing to match the cooling requirement and screed thickness for a quick response time.

With 2,880 meters of Uponor PE-Xa pipes in the 2,870 sq. ft . auditorium,

the radiant system provides cooling for the most part of the year. During the midsummer, when the temperature reaches its absolute maximum, the additional conven-tional AC system jumps into action.

The school has not only thought about the well-being of the chil-dren but has also given a practical lesson to make them understand the physics of how the radiant cooling system works.

ductive material. These Comfort Panels, which are connected to a centralized chilling unit, work at higher chilled water temperatures, thus resulting in a higher coeffi -cient of performance (COP). The sensible cooling provided by the Comfort Panels has also reduced the amount of air to be circulated in the conditioned space, leading to a substantial reduction of the number of air handling units and in duct size. A reduction of energy consumption is another eff ect resulting out of the introduction of the radiant solution.

Malhotra Villa,GurgaonAN E X AMPLE OF HOW A R ADIANT SYSTEMC AN KEEP THE INDOOR S THERMALLY COMFORTABLE

Pleasant temperatures all year round and a perfect energy balance – these were the primary goals of the owners. Today, the villa is an ideal example of how the radiant system can keep the indoors ther-mally comfortable, when the out-door temperature ranges from 5 °C to 45 °C degrees temperature. And it is the fi rst system with both radiant under fl oor heating and cooling in India.

The heat pump with a cooling capacity of 15.8 kW and a heating capacity of 17.6 kW provides the necessary water temperature to the radiant system – for winter heating and summer cooling.

Project data Total space: 2480 sq. ft .

Underfl oor heating and cooling

Completion: 2010

The unique DEM control system does not only automatically manag-es the thermal comfort in the vari-ous rooms in the villa as per load variations, but it also optimizes the pumping energy consumption of the radiant circuits.

Well designed, with thermally resis-tive walls and windows and making a maximum use of daylight, this villa is an excellent example for an energy conserving building.

This villa is an excellentexample for an energy conserving building in India.
