MY FIRST FLIP
Flipping before the flipped existed

My first flip
• In 2006 I flipped my classroom.
• Was working on multimedia master level courses at the University of Westminster.
• Why am I teaching so much? I need more learning going on?
• Why not make screen capture videos so the students can learn the tools at home.
• In class we can do the coursework and do group discussions about the coursework.
![Page 4: Reflections on 10 years of flipping - Flipnet | Eventi e ...flipnet.it/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Russel-Stannard-RomeFlipped... · •In 2006 I flipped my classroom. •Was working](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042301/5ecc052e046eb57dda331f99/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

Food for thought
• I never announced anything
• I was the only teacher to do it.
• We reduced lecture time and increased tutorial time.
• Created a very good feeling on the course.
• Helped the weaker students.
• Challenges of those that didn’t do the homework.
• Some of the tutors struggled with the tutorial time.
• Content very organised. Easy to access.
• Bit by bit. From a few classes, to one module to 50% of the course.

Idea
![Page 8: Reflections on 10 years of flipping - Flipnet | Eventi e ...flipnet.it/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Russel-Stannard-RomeFlipped... · •In 2006 I flipped my classroom. •Was working](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042301/5ecc052e046eb57dda331f99/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
RELEVANCE EVERYWHERE
You don’t have to flip a whole course
![Page 9: Reflections on 10 years of flipping - Flipnet | Eventi e ...flipnet.it/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Russel-Stannard-RomeFlipped... · •In 2006 I flipped my classroom. •Was working](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042301/5ecc052e046eb57dda331f99/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Why has it emerged?• Now possible to get students to do a lot of the lower order
thinking learning at home through video, podcasts, screen casts, articles, websites, blogs etc
![Page 10: Reflections on 10 years of flipping - Flipnet | Eventi e ...flipnet.it/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Russel-Stannard-RomeFlipped... · •In 2006 I flipped my classroom. •Was working](https://reader034.vdocument.in/reader034/viewer/2022042301/5ecc052e046eb57dda331f99/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)

ExampleWatch video about oral exam for FC at home
Do quiz at home to check learning
In class work in groups and think of typical questions in the exam
In class re-enact the exam in groups
2 students do exam, one student acts as examiner

Some examples
• A mini grammar lesson
• Talking about the oral exam
• Word building
Take some of the low level thinking skills work out of the lesson and get the students to do this at home.

Conclusions
• Start small ( just one/two lessons).
• Look for content/produce content.
• Don’t make any big announcement.
• Think about what the students who are not prepared will do.
• Get lots of feedback from students.
• Be prepared for change in the class.
