MILWAUKEE ARENA

The project I will be working on until graduation will be a mixed-use sports facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The images are from the first midterm that focus more on the urban design framework and schematic building layout.

The site is located in the Historic Third Ward District, which is just south of Downtown and disconnected by major freeway overpasses. Currently the majority of the district is surface parking lots that serve the festivals in the Festival Park along the lake front. The goal is to continue the infill mixed-use development that the District prefers down to the southern edge of the site where the Arena will be located.

Carrying the mixed-use development into the Arena design itself will help turn a more inward focus program outwards to provide activity during non-game times. Other principles for the Arena are to maximize it as a destination venue, connect physically and use wise with festival site, take advantage of waterfront property and views.

DEVELOPING DISTRICTS

This project combined planning, urban design, landscape design, and architecture to create an urban plan for a neighboring northwest town looking 30 to 100 years in the future. Our team’s designdeveloped the existing character of Springfield by enhancing each district’s identity and offering a variety of urban spaces.

Although Main Street was kept as the central spine of downtown, 5th street became a focus during redevelopment due to its connection with each District and north-south connections. The entire duration of the studio was spent learning about urban design, pushing our design capabilities, enhancing our skills working in a team, and consistently presenting our progress to city officials, our client.

HOST3L

Developing a program and identity for a hostel in downtown Portland allowed for a more creative and conceptual approach to the design process. Typically, structure, program, and form are all developed atthe same time each informing each other, but what would happen if they were each developed separately?

HOST3L is a combination of three separate buildings, one focused on structure and connected to the intersecting grid, the second generated a functional hostel program and how those spaces should be layered, and the third developed a form that isn’t influenced by program or structure but by the surrounding context.

The final product is a dynamic building rooted in its location and function for the program requirements of a hostel. Within the building several locations highlight the results of a separated design process, and instead of being resolved, are celebrated.

COMMUNAL INTERACTION

The focus for creating an Event Center for a hazelnut farm was on fostering different types of activities through a wall system. The wall system was designed to promote communal activities. Connecting to Springfield’s strong industrial history as a logging and lumber town, the wall system is made out of wood lumber that could easily be constructed and changed to fit the needs of changeable gallery spaces.

The simple layout brings the focus to these three wall conditions, one for gathering, one as a threshold, and the third for meandering. Hallways are lined with the meandering wall condition and entries or views are defined with the threshold condition.

The exposed 2x6 studs show how the structure is made and creates the feelings of meandering, passing through a threshold, and gathering, through the ability to change angles and position. Nestling the building among a hazelnut grove provides shelter for the more exposed enclosure.

PROFESSIONAL WORK - ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

During a summer internship, I was instrumental in developing plans and graphics for a new Elementary Charter School in Northern California. I worked closely with other architects scheming new site plan iterations and programming the major buildings, such as Administration, Multipurpose Room, and future independent school facility (shown on the right page).

The site plan evolved as different ideas were tested out, such as classroom pods, and as new criteria was added, for example doubling checking that there was a fire lane and delivery access to the Multipurpose Building.

I referenced other schools projects for relative sizes of classrooms, offices, and basketball courts to begin programming the larger buildings to make them functional for their location within the site. I was in charge of coming up with the original schemes that were then reviewed by the architects in charge of the project.

Each week, I prepared a submission packet with new site plan iterations and supporting graphics for a meeting with the clients. I attending meetings and was able to learn more about the relationship between architects and clients.

PROFESSIONAL WORK - CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS

During a summer internship I worked on a Tenant Improvement project for an existing shell building.

I helped put together a set of Construction Drawings for permit that had been already designed by the out-of-state corporate architect. My responsibilities included updated the reflecting ceiling plan with the mechanical ducts based on plans from the mechanical engineers, changing the drawings to reflect how the building was completed, and any changes in detailing. I updated and compiled the detail sheets from other similar projects, including drawing details from scratch to show a unique condition.

Looking at code books, I calculated the exiting plans based on occupancy loads of the suite and of the floors above and put together the sheet exiting layout.

Working with the project architect I edited the drawings based on new findings or plan check comments.
