MAFA Vice President External Questions
1. Why is MAFA important to you?MAFA is important to me because of how it has helped me grow in my culture and as an
individual. I want to be able to give that same experience to future conference attendees and other
inspiring leaders.
Being an American-born Filipina, I have always felt like it was harder for me to relate to the
Filipino culture. The only real relation I had to it was through food and the television shows that I would
sometimes watch with my mother and grandmother. When I finally entered college and became an
active member of the Bayanihan Student Organization at Marquette, I knew I had to seize the
opportunity to grow a little more into my culture. Attending conferences like MAFA gave me that
opportunity to see what the Filipino culture was all about through the workshops and especially through
conversing with other students who knew more about the culture than I did.
Not only did attending the MAFA conferences help me grow into my culture, but it also helped
me grow as an individual. Looking back to my freshman year of college, I was a very shy individual who
was unsure of herself. Attending the MAFA conferences and acting as the MAFA representative for
Marquette this year took me out of my shell and got me accustomed to meeting new people,
networking, and establishing new friendships all over the Midwest. By attending CWAC each year, both
at FACT and MAFA, I was able to shape and enhance my leadership skills to become the leader I am
today.
2. What do you think are the responsibilities of Vice President External, and what kind of experience doyou have that makes you qualified to fill this position?
One of the main responsibilities of Vice President External is networking with the other collegiate
Filipino organizations around the country and updating them with events going on in the Midwest and
with MAFA. The Vice President External can also organize trips to go to the events that are hosted by
other schools around the country.
This year I held the position of External Public Relations Officer for the Bayanihan Student
Organization. Part of my responsibilities consisted of updating the other Midwest Filipino organizations
with big events that our organization was holding, such as our annual fashion show and cultural show. I

was also responsible for organizing the trips to conferences such as FACT and MAFA. I have the
experience to network and communicate well with others. I know how to organize a trip if the
opportunity presented itself for any of the MAFA members to go to a conference or event outside of the
Midwest. I feel like the work I did this year, as the External Public Relations Officer is very similar to the
responsibilities of the Vice President External, just on a grander scale.
3. Being Vice President External suggests that you are capable of dealing with multiple social situations indifferent places. Based on this principle, what will you do as VPE to help further the growth of our
organization?
If I were to be elected VPE, I would focus much of my effort on furthering the relationships that
MAFA has with other organizations around the country. In doing so, I hope to show the other
organizations what the Midwest has to offer and hopefully get other people from around the country to
come to our conference. I also hope to reach out to the MAFA schools and have them network with
other schools that are not in the Midwest. Maybe even establish a sort of Ate school system with other
organizations outside of the Midwest if other schools were willing to participate.
I believe that the growth of our organization occurs internally as well as externally. If I were
elected as VPE, I would try to work closely with the Vice President Internal to spread the mission and
values of MAFA, not only to the schools in our organization but to the schools in other regional
organizations.
