State St. divides east and west addresses, and Madison St. divides north and south adresses. Suburban street numbers vary; not all use Chicago’s system. One mile is equal to 800 street numbers. Example: Montrose (4400 N) is one mile north of Addison (3600 N). Note: Chicago streets were renumbered in 1909. This adjustment was responsible for the one break with the 800 numbers to a mile rule. Between Madison St. and Roosevelt Rd. (Twelfth St.) 1,200 numbers were used in one mile. Between Roosevelt (Twelfth) and Cermak Rd. (Twenty- second St.) 1000 numbers were used in one mile, and from Cermak (Twenty-second) to Thirty-first St. 900 numbers were used in one mile. 855 to Bolingbrook/ Romeoville (877) Non-stop to Western Suburbs (877) Non-stop to South Suburbs (835) Non-stop to Oak Lawn, Chicago Ridge and Worth 100 101 100 101 Points of Interest - Outlying Allstate Arena, C-1 Baha’i Temple, A-5 Broadview Village Square Mall, G-2 Brookfield Zoo, G-2 Chicago Academy of Sciences, E-6 Chicago Historical Society, E-6 Chicago Ridge Mall, K-3 Chicago State University, K-6 Chinatown, G-6 US Cellular Field (White Sox), H-6 Concordia University, F-3 Cook County Courts: Bridgeview, K-3; Chicago at 26th/ California, G-5; Maywood, F-2 Skokie, A-4 Daley College, J-4 DePaul University, Lincoln Park, E-6 Dominican University, E-3 Donald E. The 2006 RTA System Map features the most current route information available at the time of publication. This user-friendly map has color coded routes and numerous graphic icons to help our transit customers use part or all of the RTA system to complete a trip. Service Overview The CTA runs buses, routes 1 through 204, and elevated/subway rapid transit trains in Chicago and 38 nearby suburbs. Most run every day, early morning through late evening, every five to 20 minutes. Some routes run overnight, usually every 30 minutes. CTA fares differ depending on how you pay. The fare is $1.75 for both bus and rail when using the Chicago Cardor Chicago Card Plus. When using CTA Transit Cards, the fare is $1.75 for buses and $2.00 for trains. A cash fare is $2.00 for both buses and trains. 30-Day, 7-Day, and Visitor Passes are also available. For more information or to order your Chicago Cardor Chicago Card Plus, log on to www.transitchicago.com. METRA runs commuter trains from four downtown terminals. There are 11 rail lines that extend from the city to the suburbs. Trains run frequently during rush hour periods, otherwise every one to three hours. Fares are separate from CTA and Pace. Use cash, one-way, Ten Ride, Monthly Pass, Pace PlusBus or Metra Link-Up to ride. The price range of a single-ride ticket varies between $1.95 to $7.30 as a result of fares being distance and zone based. For more information, log on to www.metrarail.com. PACE runs suburban buses, Routes 205 and above, in the six-county region, many connecting with Metra and CTA. Most routes run every 30 to 60 minutes through mid evening. Major routes run daily. Use cash, Commuter Club Card, Metra/Pace PlusBus, Metra Link-Up, 10 Ride Tickets, or student passes to ride. Basic fare: $1.50. For more information, log on to www.pacebus.com. South Shore Line runs trains on the Metra Electric line from downtown Chicago (Randolph/Van Buren) to South Bend, IN, serving the southeast portion of Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Single-ride ticket prices range from $2.90 to $10.35, depending on distance traveled. For more information log, on to www.nictd.com. *All fare rates are as of September, 2006. RTA Travel Information The RTA Travel Information Center (TIC) is available on the Internet or by telephone. The TIC operates from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily. The TIC provides customers with times, directions and connections to anywhere in the six-county service area. Log on to www.rtachicago.com or call 836-7000 from the city or suburbs. TTY users can obtain travel info by dialing 312-836-4949. Web enabled cell phone and PDA-users can obtain RTA Travel Information at www2.rtamobile.com. No area code is needed for the telephone-based service for callers from the 312, 773, 630, 708 or 815 area codes. Residents of the 224 and 847 area codes must use their respective area codes when dialing. Note: you can reach RTA Travel Information from any location by using the 312 prefix. Our region needs your help! You use transit to run errands, meet friends or for your daily commute. But if you could improve transit in Northeastern Illinois – what would you change? Improve and expand mass transit The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) is looking for those ideas. The RTA along with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, Pace and dozens of Partners for Transit are working to improve and expand our transit network. We’re calling it the Moving Beyond Congestion project because we believe the best way to address our severe road congestion is with an expansion of our transit network. Your comments and ideas will help develop a strategic plan to ease congestion on our roads, provide transit options for millions of people, reduce our reliance on foreign oil, help clean our air, and improve our overall quality of life here in Northeastern Illinois. Resources fall short of existing demand Because of the skyrocketing price of fuel, employee benefits, paratransit and post 9-11 security, transit costs are rising faster than transit funding, even with higher demand. The CTA, Metra, and Pace have all used money earmarked for capital projects to keep trains and buses running on a daily basis. We can only do that for a short time before frequent equipment breakdowns due to deferred maintenance affect reliability. The funding gap also eliminates any expansion, now or in the future. You want dependable transit service, and that’s why we need your help. Show your support! As the RTA and our partners develop a strategic plan, we need to hear from you. First, become a Partner for Transit by logging on to www.MovingBeyondCongestion.org and filling out our online transit survey. Your comments will help us develop a regional consensus on how to move forward. Then, get involved: contact your legislators, tell your friends, and show your support for transit expansion as we shape the future of our region. Facts on the Costs of Road Congestion Congestion is a severe and growing threat that costs the Northeastern Illinois region $4.2 billion a year in wasted fuel and wasted time sitting in traffic. Each commuter in our region traveling during rush hour pays an average of nearly $1,000 per year in wasted fuel and workable hours. The region’s commuters burn 253 million hours and 151 million gallons of fuel sitting in traffic jams. Northeastern Illinois ranks 2nd in the nation for the highest average commute time. Facts on the System that Moves Millions The RTA system covers 3,700 square miles in the six- county region with a population of more than 8.3 million people. The combined operations of the RTA’s three Service Boards – the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra and Pace constitute the second-largest transit system in North America and the nation’s third-largest bus system. There are more than 2 million trips on transit every day in Northeastern Illinois. If all those people were on the roads, the result would be gridlock. The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that our transit network saved the region more than $1.6 billion because of the reduction in road congestion. The Fact is – You can Help! You can play a role in addressing congestion in our region. Fill out the online transit survey at www.MovingBeyondCongestion.org or call 1-866-771-7781 and help us shape the future of transit in Northeastern Illinois. Did you know? Chicago Street numbers start at State andMadison downtown. State St. divides east and westaddresses, and Madison St. divides north andsouth adresses. Suburban street numbers vary;not all use Chicago’s system. One mile is equal to800 street numbers. Example: Montrose (4400 N)is one mile north of Addison (3600 N).

Note: Chicago streets were renumbered in 1909.This adjustment was responsible for the one breakwith the 800 numbers to a mile rule. BetweenMadison St. and Roosevelt Rd. (Twelfth St.) 1,200numbers were used in one mile. BetweenRoosevelt (Twelfth) and Cermak Rd. (Twenty-second St.) 1000 numbers were used in one mile, and from Cermak (Twenty-second) to Thirty-firstSt. 900 numbers were used in one mile.

Our region needs your help! You use transit to run errands, meet friends or for your dailycommute. But if you could improve transit in Northeastern Illinois– what would you change?

Improve and expand mass transitThe Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) is looking for thoseideas. The RTA along with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra,Pace and dozens of Partners for Transit are working to improve andexpand our transit network. We’re calling it the Moving BeyondCongestion project because we believe the best way to address oursevere road congestion is with an expansion of our transit network.Your comments and ideas will help develop a strategic plan to easecongestion on our roads, provide transit options for millions of people, reduce our reliance on foreign oil, help clean our air, and improveour overall quality of life here in Northeastern Illinois.

Resources fall short of existing demandBecause of the skyrocketing price of fuel, employee benefits, paratransit and post 9-11 security, transit costs are rising faster thantransit funding, even with higher demand. The CTA, Metra, andPace have all used money earmarked for capital projects to keeptrains and buses running on a daily basis. We can only do that fora short time before frequent equipment breakdowns due to deferredmaintenance affect reliability. The funding gap also eliminates anyexpansion, now or in the future. You want dependable transit service, and that’s why we need your help.

Show your support! As the RTA and our partners develop a strategic plan, we need tohear from you. First, become a Partner for Transit by logging onto www.MovingBeyondCongestion.org and filling out ouronline transit survey. Your comments will help us develop a regionalconsensus on how to move forward. Then, get involved: contactyour legislators, tell your friends, and show your support for transitexpansion as we shape the future of our region.

Facts on the Costs of Road Congestion■ Congestion is a severe and growing threat that costs the

Northeastern Illinois region $4.2 billion a year in wastedfuel and wasted time sitting in traffic.

■ Each commuter in our region traveling during rushhour pays an average of nearly $1,000 per year in wastedfuel and workable hours.

■ The region’s commuters burn 253 million hours and151 million gallons of fuel sitting in traffic jams.

■ Northeastern Illinois ranks 2nd in the nation for thehighest average commute time.

Facts on the System that Moves Millions■ The RTA system covers 3,700 square miles in the six-

county region with a population of more than 8.3 millionpeople.

■ The combined operations of the RTA’s three ServiceBoards – the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metraand Pace constitute the second-largest transit system inNorth America and the nation’s third-largest bus system.

■ There are more than 2 million trips on transit every dayin Northeastern Illinois. If all those people were on theroads, the result would be gridlock. The U.S. Departmentof Transportation reported that our transit network savedthe region more than $1.6 billion because of thereduction in road congestion.

The Fact is – You can Help!■ You can play a role in addressing congestion in our

region. Fill out the online transit survey atwww.MovingBeyondCongestion.org or call 1-866-771-7781 and help us shape the future of transit in Northeastern Illinois.
