A rich architectural heritage is found in Mason City, which contains one of the largest concentrations of Prairie School architecture in one location, featuring both commercial and residential buildings. The only remaining Frank Lloyd Wright designed hotel, the Historic Park Inn, has been restored after a complete renovation funded by local citizens and grants from Iowa Great Places and Save America’s Treasures, among others. Mason City is also the home to the Rock Crest – Rock Glen National Historic District, the largest collection in the world of prairie style homes in a natural setting, containing works by Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Burley Griffin and F. Barry Byrne.

Mason City also has a tradition of quality planning. From successful urban renewal projects in the 70s and 80s to a unique hybrid form-based code in use today, Mason City has parlayed plans into successful projects. The downtown mall remains viable, partially because it was

integrated into the downtown fabric instead of supplanting the traditional downtown core. A new streetscape reflects the city’s architectural heritage, and several historic facades were recently renovated. These efforts were recognized by the APA in 2013, when Downtown Mason City was designated a Great Place in America, only the third place in Iowa to be so designated.

Mason City is often called “River City,” as native son and composer Meredith Willson patterned the iconic setting for “The Music Man” after his home town. The Upper Midwest APA Conference provides opportunities to discover the unique attractions and history of North Iowa and to experience local cuisine and culture. Mason City looks forward to welcoming you to “The Original River City.”
