• Damage was most severe in the Ayeyarwady Delta

region, an area covering some 23,500 square kilometres,

known as the country’s rice bowl. The effects of cyclonic

winds were compounded by a 3-4 metre storm surge,

devastating most of the low-lying highly fertile areas.

The Role of ASEAN during NARGIS

• Since July this year, Thailand has been affected

by a monsoon and three tropical storms – Hai

Ma, Nok Ten, Hai Tang, and Nalgae. As a result,

most of big reservoirs were almost full from

rainwater. At the same time, a huge volume of

run off causes flood in all region of the country.

• Capacity mapping/stockpile information

• The level of trust between member states

Observations

The more frequent of many extreme catastrophes;

where the effects went beyond one country and

created the butterfly effects throughout the world,

had triggered the need for more collaborative and

systematic humanitarian assistance at the

international and regional level.

The regional cooperation throughout the disaster

cycle (preparedness, response, and recovery) could

greatly contribute to disaster risk reduction efforts

and prevent further loss of life and properties due to

the Black Swan Events.

Conclusion

Proactive Prevention, Adversity Mitigation,

Rehabilitation and Rescue, Are the Spirit of DDPM
