INTRODUCTION
The Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development(AFPPD) and the Asian Harm Reduction Network (AHRN), with the support of
the United Nations Population Fund, are organizing a Regional Workshop onthe Promotion of HIV/AIDS-Drugs Prevention and Harm Reduction in ChiangMai, Thailand from Friday 14 to Saturday 15 December, 2007. The aim of theworkshop is to inform and educate parliament staff and staff of national com-mittees on the inter-relationship of HIV/AIDS-Drugs and resulted harm, so thatthe staff can encourage parliamentarians and other elected representatives toimplement harm reduction strategies. The two-day event will be conducted byexperts from AHRN. Over twenty participants from all over Asia will be attend-ing the workshop.
The term harm reduction refers to various strategies and approaches for re-ducing the physical and social harms associated with risk behavior. It involvesreducing the adverse consequences of drug use without necessarily reducing
consumption. It is also about preventing HIV transmission as well other blood-borne infections.
The workshop aims to:
understand the complex interplay between drug use, and other riskybehaviors and potential harms like HIV and other blood-borne viruses;
explain the place of harm reduction among contemporary drug policyapproaches;
explain the benefits brought about by involving all affected communitymembers, especially people using drugs, in the planning, implementa-tion, monitoring and evaluation of responses to drug use and HIV;
outline the public health evidence base supporting harm reduction inter-ventions.
TIME ZONEBangkok and Chiang Mai are GMT +7 hours.
CURRENCYThe Thai baht is freely convertible. Several exchange counters are openseven days a week at the airport and in the city. Normally, hotels give
lower exchange rates than the banks. Banks have the working hoursfrom 8:30 to 15:00, Monday-Friday. There are several banks that are 3-minute walking distance from the hotel, namely Siam Commercial Bankand Kasikorn Bank. The current exchange rate is USD 1 to approxi-mately THB34.

AIRPORT TRANSPORTTransportation from Chiang Mai International Airport to the conferencevenue will be provided by the hotel, please look for the Amari Rincomesign in the arrival hall. If it is necessary to stay one night in Bangkok fortransit due to unavailability of flights , please make specific arrangementswith AFPPD secretariat.
AIR TICKET REIMBURSEMENTPlease check who is funding your ticket. If AFPPD has arranged to payfor your air ticket, which was purchased by you or the National Commit-tee, please bring the official invoice together with a photocopy of your airticket at the time of registration for reimbursement.
INSURANCEParticipants are requested to obtain a health insurance before travelingas medical treatment in Thailand is costly. AFPPD is not responsible forhealth and accident insurances.
REGISTRATIONRegistration with AFPPD Secretariat will take place in front of PayormRoom, Ground Floor, on Thursday 13th December from 17:00. At regis-tration, you will receive your nametag and workshop information kit. Par-ticipants who arrive late are requested to register before the workshopcommences on Friday 14th December at 8:30-9:00 in the meeting venue(Payorm Room).
LANGUAGEThe training will be conducted in English. Translation services are notavailable.
