SPECIAL 2011 ISSUE!

This year has been a busy one

for the Progress Project, with our members getting involved in a variety of different projects and activities – many of which you can read all about in this issue! They have all worked so hard in expressing their opinions and getting their voices heard about things that matter to them – so a big WELL DONE to you all! We have created this as a special issue as for the first time it is being made available to lots of people outside of our member group – so we have tried to include articles that everybody will enjoy! We have 2 parts to the Progress Project: The YPD Forum meet monthly to talk about things relevant to their lives. They may be things that they see as important or that we have been asked to give feedback on. The forum is fully inclusive and finds new ways for disabled young people to give opinions and express themselves. The Futures Programme works to give disabled young people Skills for Adulthood, as well as Training and Employment sessions and Healthy Lifestyle courses. Part of this project offers training to organisations

about how to participate well with young people. Our website is soon to be up and running, and you will be able to find out all the info about our current activities. And don’t forget to enter our

competition, where you can

We are now settled into our base at Kingsley Hall, Parsloes Avenue, Dagenham and are busy making it a great resource for other organisations in the community, as well as for ourselves. Our facilities include: A medium sized meeting/session room A ‘messy play’ room Accessible toilets A large garden with grassed area, and a fenced off area with accessible swing We are also in the process of fitting a fully functional Sensory Room which we hope will be operational in early 2012. We also have access to a range of technology within the centre, including a Flat Screen TV, DVD Player, Pro-jector and Screen, and Laptops. If you would like to find out more information about hiring our premises, please get in contact with Rosie Tringham, Centre Manager on 02085922020, or you can email on [email protected].

In the past few months, the group have been concentrating on designing their own website, which will give them up to date information about the activities that they have access to. They would also like to use it as a tool to get some new members to start taking part in the projects we offer, as well as to show other or-ganisations the kind of things they do! We started off by holding a website workshop where the group planned what the front page of the website will look like on a big sheet of paper stuck on the floor. They also decided what pages they wanted on the site, as well as where the tabs were going to be. Included on the website will be some of the photos taken during our activity and forum sessions, as well as information about our dedicated YouTube Channel where you will find some videos of our sessions. There will also be a section on how to join us, links to organisations that we work with, and even a special page just for the professionals! Our website is due to go live in early 2012, so watch this space!!

REVIEWS 2011

In October, the group wanted to have a workshop on Anti-Bullying techniques.

Here, Michael Wallace tell us what he thought of the session;

“It was fun doing the role play. I liked being filmed with the camera. I told Ben he talks too much! I talked about bullying to my friends like I do at college. I would like to do more on bullying and more filming. I would like to be the cameraman next time”

In September, the group organised a Movie Night at our base at Kingsley Hall. We watched Hancock, and had lots of pizza!

Here is a review by Neffaterri Spooner “I had fun. The pizza was good. The film was good. I would like to have another movie night at Kingsley Hall”

Victoria Ann Lee came with us on our Harvester trip in November, where we took

up a big space in the restaurant as there were 15 of us! Below, she writes about how much she enjoyed the trip!

“I haven't been out with the Progress Project for a while, but it has been good. Food was nice and the waitress was nice. My dessert looked beauti-ful. I would go again”

Paul Hawkins and Dawn Harrison wrote us a review of the great time they had at

the Festival they went to in July. The Festival was celebrating the Olympics, and before the group went they all planned how to get there!

“It was a great day! It was really hot and there was lots of a activities to do. I liked the boat ride. We followed a map to find different numbers and points. We would like to go again because I really liked the activities.” We are hoping to be contacted by the Olympic Planning Team again, so that we can do some more reporting. But after this article, we were featured in Transitions Magazine!

PARTICIPATION

Here are some top tips for organisations who want to successfully engage with disabled young people.... Follow a schedule that is also visible to us so that we know what is coming next Be very clear about what you would like us to discuss, or better still—let us decide! Allow us to discuss things in small groups first so that we can build our confidence

about the subject we are talking about Make the session really interactive and fun Use lots of creative media to help us express our opinions—sometimes a drawing is

just as informative as a questionnaire, and a lot more fun! Be prepared to change your session to suit our individual needs We love to feedback to the whole group at the end of the session

OLYMPIC TRIP

On Saturday 26th November 2011, some of our group went to watch an Olympic Pretest Handball match at the Olympic Park, Stratford. Great Britain were playing Slovakia, but unfortunately we lost, ending up in 6th place! We had a great time though, and enjoyed our journey there on the Tube, and our walk through the new Westfield Centre. It was a really long walk to the Handball Arena, but there was a section of really brightly coloured bouncy floor that cheered us up! Here are some photos of our trip,
