Activities of INSSANApart from publication of activities, member’s contributions through bulletin, conducting in house training programs, consultancy, conventions, meets, summits etc., INSSAN conducts various contests to recognize excellence in Suggestion Scheme every year at National level. We firmly believe that success in Suggestion Scheme requires recognizing & encouraging the employee involvement efforts, at all levels in the organisation to achieve the ultimate goal. Consequently it become imperative to recognize the different target groups within the organisation who have a distinct role to play in making the scheme an allround success. The various contests conducted by INSSAN aim to recognize contributions of these distinct groups who are in fact partners in realizing the effectiveness of the Suggestion Scheme, front runners of the improvement process.

Idea GenerationIt is said that to get 1 gram of gold from the goldmine you have to dig out 7 to 8 tons of soil. Similarly to get a workable implementable idea which can give good results for the organisation and achieve all round improvement in the working processes of the organisation, you need to have lot of ideas to be gathered. The source of these ideas is largely from the employees of the organisation because these are the people who have hands on experience, actual working hand who else will understand the complexities in carrying out the jobs and have ideas / suggestions to improve products / services.
To help generate these ideas from the employees, we have described formulation of ideas in the next continuing pages. This will help those, who perform work, who need to train such operatives, guide them to think differently (out of the box) and achieve benefits for self as well as organisation in terms of cost reduction, working process improvements, safe working conditions, reduction of unsafe acts etc.
Eliminate numerical quota for the workforce.Eliminate numerical goals for people in Management.It is essential,to eliminate fear in order to foster a creative environment
William Edwards Deming
18
This list, suggests additional ways to examine and question a machine, part or process for improvement ideas.
Use it another way
- Is there another way to use it while keeping the current set up?
- Can anything else be produced?
Borrow an idea from something similar
- Ideas are formed by combining. See if ideas used elsewhere can be adapted to your improvement project.
Change or replace it
- Change the shape, color, sound, smell, movement, location, orientation, power source and so on.
- Rotate it.
- Remove something that’s there, add what’s not there.
Expand it
- Add something; spend more time; increase the repetition; make it stronger, longer or thicker, add some other value, double it, duplicate it, increase it, exaggerate it.
19
Reduce it
- Remove something, make it smaller or stronger, divide it, simplify reduce it, lighten it, express it in a more subdued way.
Use alternatives
- Use someone of something else, use other elements, ingredients, materials, methods, locations, approaches or tone of voice.
Replace it
- Use different elements or ingredients, dies, layout sequence or arrangement. Reverse the cause and effect.
Change the pace, speed or schedule.
Reverse it
- Turn it upside down, invert it, reverse the positions; front and back, positive and negatives, change the roles, orientation or set up.
Combine it
- Mix it, make an alloy. Assemble it.

Idea Generation
The 5-S movement takes its name from the initials of five Japanese words start with, namely, seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu and shitsuke. As part of the visual management of an overall program, signs that repeat the steps are often posted in the Workshop.
Step 1 Seiri (straighten up)
Differentiate between the necessary and the unnecessary and discard the unnecessary
* Work in process
* Unnecessary tools
* Unused machinery
* Defective products
* Papers and documents
Step 2 Seiton (put things in order) Thing must be kept in order so that they are ready for use when needed. An American engineer recalls that he used to spend hours searching for tools and parts when he worked in Cincinnati. Only after he joined
a Japanese Company and saw how easily the workers were able to find what they needed. Did he realize the value of ‘seiton’.
21
Step 3 Seiso (clean up) keep the workplace clean. It consists of cleaning up the workplace and
giving it a shine. Cleaning must be done by everyone in the
organisation. No area should be left uncleaned.Step 4 Seiketsu (Personal cleanliness) Make it a habit to be clean and tidy, starting
with your own person. It encompasses both personal and
environmental cleanliness. Personnel must therefore practice seiketsu
starting with their personal tidiness.Step 5 Shitsuke (discipline) Follow procedures in the workshop. It denotes commitment to maintain orderliness
and to practice the first 4S as a way of life. The emphasis of shitsuke is elimination of bad
habits and constant practice of good ones.
Invention and Innovation go hand-in-hand.Invention being the creation of something new and Innovation being it’s commercialisation.Simply put it also means one creates and the other exploits.

SOME WAYS TO THINK ABOUT THE JOB THE QUESTIONS IN SUCH A
WAY THATHOW CAN IMake my job more efficient? Make my job easier? Reduce printing ? Improve the quality of the product or service ? Increase productivity ? Be more environmentally conscious? Improve maintenance? Reduce paperwork? Improve customer service? Reduce inventory? Reduce waste? Improve purchasing procedures? Lower tardiness? Reduce absenteeism? Improve phone courtesy ? Reduce material shortage ? Introduce new services ? Reduce photocopying ? Correct a safety hazard ? Enhance telemarketing ? Reduce cycle time ? Optimise computer utilisation ? Reduce equipment downtime ?
SOME WAYS TO THINK ABOUT THE IDEA…..
1] Does the suggestion address a real problem or improvement opportunity ?
28
2] Does the suggestion offer a valid solution ?
3] Has the suggester covered all aspects of the problem ?
4] Will the solution have to be further developed to be effective ?
5] Does the solution create other problems ?
6] Would a different solution be preferable ?
7] Is the suggester’s idea already ‘ under consideration‘ ?
8] Are any facts missing ?
9] If it is a re-evaluation,have significant facts come to light ?
10] Would the cost outweigh the benefit ?
11] Can the idea be enhanced or expanded ?
12] What and whom does the idea impact ?
13] How far does the idea reach (other work areas, groups ) ?
14] Have YOU considered all aspects of the suggestion ?

Communication
To encourage worker participation,Japanese companies have devised various other programmes
to improve communication with workers and their families.The following are some examples :
# Plant tours for family members # Family-directed publicity on company activities # Company badges for workers # Citation for Outstanding Performance,Long Service,Safety Maintenance and the like # Intradepartmental Contests # Welcome Parties for new Employees # Visits to oyher company plants Company Bulletins and Plant Newspapers # Radio Broadcasts of the latest news # CMD’s message in pay slips # Field Day events # In-House ‘ Guinness Books ‘ # Regular Meetings with Top Management.
Unless a conscious, pervasive effort is made to neutralise differences of status within the company,class antagonism will poison the atmosphere and doom the most rational of plans. The Manager’s first job is to learn to communicate with his employees so both workers and the company can achieve their common goals Masaki Imai-Kaizen.
