Dear colleagues,

I am honored to represent the unique event that is the 2016 Gutenberg! The com-mittee, which consists of print, packaging, and ennoblement of print enthusiasts, reinvents itself every year and always welcomes new passionate partners! This is very motivating!

The Gutenberg contest has established its pedigree. Thanks to the outstanding collaboration of our sponsors, our partners in print production and to the enthusiasm of the participants, the Committee, which has worked hard for the last three years, is once again ready to celebrate!

Don’t forget that the contest is open to all the people working in the Quebec printing industry. The challenges are there for everyone, small and big players alike, no matter the geographical location or the size of the company! For 2016, the theme will be the Unity. For us, Unity is an ensemble of business sectors that form an indivisible whole. That’s our industry!

Packaging, flexography, large format printing, offset, digital, cutting, lamination… no matter your area of expertise, take part in the contest and be proud of your designs!

My passion for our industry comes in big part from people I have met during my career. That’s why I am happy to join the fabulous organizing committee of the Gutenberg contest to gather people from the industry and celebrate with them our outstanding achievements! Together, all over Quebec, let’s take part in the contest!

The judging of the printed items, which is a difficult task for the six judges, takes place on two five-hour nights. The panel is made up of professionals from all the sectors of the industry.

Here is how the judging process works:

Each submitted entry is num-bered according to the des-cription sheet included in the registration form that you sent us. The information about the company is hidden and the judges never know where the entry comes from.

Each judge is given a notebook to rate the entries according to four specific criteria (the details and the percentage allotted to each criterion are explained on page 8). Once the judges are done, the data is compiled to get an ave-rage, which ascertain the winners.

At the end of every night, the submitted entries and the grades for the three finalists in each category are placed on the table so the judges can confirm them and make sure that the winning entries were entered in the right challenge and category.

Apart from the judges, no one* knows the results of the contest before the night of the Gala, not even the organizing committee!

*Except for the production team for QI-Québec impri-merie magazine and the production team (hosting,

prizes, etc.), which are bound by absolute confidentiality.

THE GUTENBERG GALA INNOVATES!The Committee of the Gutenberg Gala is happy to announce a new category:

FLEXIBLE PACKAGING!This new category (Technical Challenge or Innovation

Challenge) includes every item printed on flexible or extensible film (i.e. plastic containers, caps, resealable plastic sleeves, bags, thermoretractable packaging, etc.). The entries can be submited as a technical or innovation challenge… They include every outstanding step that adds something to the result.

ENNOBLEMENT• Any project that uses one or more

complementary techniques (cut-out, embossing, varnish, laminate, finish…) that really adds something to the product.

FLEXIBLE PACKAGING NEW• Any product printed on flexible or

extensible film or (plastic containers, caps, resealable plastic sleeves, bags, thermoretractable packaging, etc.)

The categories don’t take into account the printing process. In the same category you can submitted entries made using offset, digital printing, screen printing, ink jet, flexography… or by combining processes. The entries will be judged according to the final result.

To ensure that the evaluation criteria are met fairly and equitably, partners (agencies, designers, project managers…) that want to present a piece must present the entry form with the print manufacturer.

All the entries must have been printed in Quebec between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015.

CHOOSING A CHALLENGE

TECHNICAL CHALLENGE Were you able to make a project that exceeded the standards of the industry despite some very hard requirements (turnaround time, budget, environmental constraints, etc.) that raised the difficulty? If that’s the case, submit your entry in the Technical Challenge.

INNOVATION CHALLENGEDid you dare to go further and make an innovative print that stands out thanks to its design, its raw materials, its manu-facturing process, its shape or its use? If that’s the case, submit your entry in the Innovation Challenge.

HOW WILL THE PRIZES BE AWARDED? An independent judging panel composed of leaders in the industry will give out the prizes in every cate-gory. To ensure fairness it is important for the judging that: • In a category, if no piece meets the judging criterion, no prize will be handed out • The name of the companies are not on the pieces that are presented and judged • The judges can’t know this information • The judges can’t enter a piece in the Contest

The judging panel reserves the right to change the category of a piece that was entered in the wrong category.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR ENTRIES ? Price for one entry: 125$Every additional entrys: 100$

Complete the registration form.

Send your completed electronic form (mandatory) to [email protected]. A hard copy must be sent with every entry submitted (2 copies of every entry must be sent).

For big-size projects: a cut (piece) of the original measuring at least 18’’x18’’ and a digital copy of 12’’x18’’ (maximum) accompanied, if possible, of a picture and/or a video of the site.

The entries must be delivered before February 20, 2016 at the Printability and Graphic Communications Institute: 999, av. Émile-Journault Est, Montreal, Quebec, H2M 2E2.

The envelopes and/or boxes must bear the words Gutenberg 2016. For more information: [email protected]
