WELCOME

It has been another highly productive year for Regnum. We havebeen delighted to see new titles in all three of our major series.

The Regnum Edinburgh Centenary series (formerly RegnumEdinburgh 2010 series) has seen significant volumes added in thepast year. With contributors from all parts of the world, on subjectssuch as religious pluralism and postmodernism, the series isgrowing into a major theological resource, which has beendeposited at major libraries across the world. It is set to continuedeveloping, with volumes on Pentecostalism, the Orthodox Church, the Lausanne process, and others. One of the latest volumes in theseries has received a recommendation from The Archbishop ofCanterbury, Rowan Williams.

Regnum Studies in Mission continues to grow as our majorseries. We were delighted that Mission in the Spirit was listed asone of the top 15 Missiology books of 2010 by IMR.

Regnum Studies in Global Christianity is now developing intoa significant series that brings theological reflection born ofexperiences and work in the global south.

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to our new RegnumResources for Mission, which aims to provide helpful material formission practitioners in both foundational and practical topics.

Our list of titles truly reflects the breadth of God’s creation.Geographically, we have books from all the corners of the globe, and our authors come from a wide range of church backgrounds.

We hope that more and more people will enjoy and benefit fromour books, through which we will see God’swork in transformation.

Reviews of The Handbook of Theological Education

“This initiative begins to bring togethersignificant resources that will beimportant references in all thechurches as they work to broaden theglobal perspective and deepen theecumenical understanding of ministrystudents to deal with the world as itis emerging.”

Brother Jeffrey Gros, FSCLewis University

“This volume will undoubtedly be ofgreat benefit to theologicaleducators, especially those

interested in global partnerships and networking;associations and individual theological institutions needing currentinformation on global trends and issues as well as reliable contactdata; church leaders and denominational boards planning fortheological and higher Christian education; and missiologists, theologians, biblical scholars, churchy historians, and other scholarsinterested in global developments in theological education. In myopinion the money will prove a worthwhile investment.”

Tony Richie, The Pneuma Review

“There is little to critique in the Handbook, except perhaps itspublication in English alone. Posting the essays online in thelanguages of their authors’ origins would take another stepforward in the localization of theological education. This minorpoint, however, does not detract from the value of this uniquevolume. Historians, church leaders, and theological educators willall find something of immense value in this landmarkcollaboration.”

John Hooten, Claremont School of Theology,in Anglican and Episcopal History

Regnum EdinburghCentenary SeriesThe Centenary of the World Missionary Conference, held in Edinburgh1910, is an opportune moment for many people seeking direction forChristian mission in the 21st century. Several different constituencieswithin world Christianity held significant events around 2010. Since 2005an international group worked collaboratively to develop anintercontinental and multi-denominational project, known as Edinburgh2010, based at New College, University of Edinburgh. This initiativebrought together representatives of twenty different global Christianbodies, representing all major Christian denominations and confessionsand many different strands of mission and church life, to prepare for theCentenary.

Essential to the work of the Edinburgh 1910 Conference, and of abidingvalue, were the findings of the eight think-tanks or ‘commissions’. Theseinspired the idea of a new round of collaborative reflection on Christianmission, now focused on nine themes identified as being key to missionin the 21st century. The study process is polycentric, open-ended, and asinclusive as possible of the different genders, regions of the world, andtheological and confessional perspectives in today’s church.

The titles of the Edinburgh Centenary Series are divided into twocategories: (1) the three official titles of Edinburgh 2010, and (2)publications of various study groups, including the Edinburgh 2010 mainstudy groups, transversal, regional and different confessional studygroups.

These publications reflect the ethos of Edinburgh 2010 and will make asignificant contribution to its study process. It should be clear that materialpublished in this series will inevitably reflect a diverse range of viewsand positions. These will not necessarily represent those of the series’editors or of the Edinburgh 2010 General Council, but in publishing themthe leadership of Edinburgh 2010 hope to encourage conversationbetween Christians and collaboration in mission. All the series volumesare commended for study and reflection by both churches andacademies.

All volumes in the Edinburgh Centenary series are hardback unlessotherwise stated.

Edinburgh 2010: Mission Then and NowDavid A. Kerr and Keneth R. Ross (eds)

The World Missionary Conference, held at Edinburgh in 1910, ranksamong the most influential andwidely remembered events inChristian history. Though theoutcomes of the Conference havediffered in many ways from theexpectations of its participants, after a century its momentoussignificance is clearer than ever. While the missionary movementwent into decline, from its workemerged a world church, withdeep roots and vigorousexpression on every continent. As the centenary of theConference approached, thetime was ripe to examine itsmeaning in light of the pastcentury and the questions facing Christian witness today. This bookis the first to systematically examine the eight Commissions whichreported to Edinburgh 1910 and gave the conference much of itssubstance and enduring value. It will deepen and extend thereflection stimulated by the centenary and will kindle themissionary imagination beyond 2010.

Edinburgh 2010: Witnessing to Christ TodayDaryl Balia and Kirsteen Kim (eds)

The Centenary of the WorldMissionary Conference, held inEdinburgh in 1910, is a suggestivemoment for many people seekingdirection for Christian mission in thetwenty-first century. Since 2005 aninternational group has workedcollaboratively to develop anintercontinental and multi-denominational project, nowknown as Edinburgh 2010, andbased at New College, Universityof Edinburgh. Essential to thework of the Edinburgh 1910Conference, and of abiding value, were the findings of the eightthink-tanks or ‘com-missions’.These inspired the idea of a new

round of collaborative reflection onChristian mission – but now focused on nine themes identified asbeing key to mission in the twenty-first century. The study processis intended to contribute, from a research perspective, to the aimof Edinburgh 2010 – witnessing together to Christ in the twenty-first century – and to the development of a new vision in terms ofGod’s purposes for creation in Christ and a renewed spirituality andmission ethos in the life of churches worldwide. Witnessing toChrist Today contains a summary of what has been achievedthrough the study process up to the end of 2009 and forms thepreparatory volume for the centenary conference which was heldin Edinburgh in June 2010. There the material was subjected torigorous critique from various transversal perspectives and engagedwith by church and mission delegates from around the world.

Edinburgh 2010: Mission Today and TomorrowKirsteen Kim & Andrew Anderson (Eds)

In May 2009, 35 theologians fromAsia, Africa and Europe met inWuppertal, Germany, for aconsultation on mission theologyorganized by the United EvangelicalMission Communion of 35 Churchesin Three Continents. The aim was toparticipate in the 100th anniversaryof the Edinburgh conferencethrough a study process and reflecton the challenges for mission inthe 21st century. We decided notto invite renowned experts, but tohave an open invitation through acall for papers, so that practicingmission experts not yet well-known would have anopportunity to share theirexpertise. We decided not to predetermine a theme ormotto for the consultation but to allow various themes on missionto emerge from the papers themselves and thus to allow wide-ranging discussions. Indeed the papers were varied; each drewstrong reactions, lively and even controversial debates. We wereable to discover common concerns transcending very differentcontexts. The collection of papers in this book has been taken fromthe papers delivered at the Wuppertal consultation. In some cases, short responses by one or two of the consultation participants wereadded to highlight the discussions that followed. The very variedvoices collected in this anthology nevertheless have much incommon. Even where they are most theoretical, it is obvious thatall contributors come from missionary practice and bring in theircontextual experiences.

Holistic Mission: God’s Plan for God’s PeopleBrian E. Woolnough and Wonsuk Ma (eds)

Holistic mission, or integralmission, implies God is concernedwith the whole person, the wholecommunity: body, mind and spirit. Many Christians concentrate onlyon one aspect. This bookreaffirms that to be true to theBible, to follow the example ofJesus, the church must addressthe whole person in all theirneeds. It considers the meaningof the holistic gospel, how it hasdeveloped, and implications forthe individual Christian, for thelocal church, for denominationsand church groups, formissionary societies, forChristian NGOs, and for

theological training institutions. ...an excellent contribution. This is a valuable sample of evangelical‘reflection on praxis’ from men and women active in holisticmission in different parts of the world.

Samuel EscobarThe inescapable message of this volume is that the gospel of graceand the gospel of justice are one. What God has joined together, the Church must stop putting asunder.

Brian StanleyThis comprehensive volume, rich in its range of content andinternational voices, helpfully documents a century of debate andgathers together some of the major issues.

Evangelical and Frontier Mission:Perspectives on the Global Progress of the Gospel

Beth Snodderly & A. Scott Moreau (eds)The centennial celebrations of theEdinburgh 1910 conference offeredChristians of all stripes multipleopportunities to reflect on the pastcentury of mission. Over the courseof the twentieth century one of thestories of the church that hasmoved towards centre stage is thegrowth of evangelicalism aroundthe world. While certainly until thelate 1980s this went largelyunnoticed among the academicelite of the world, even so by thenthe vast majority of themissionaries serving to and fromevery corner of the globe wereframed in some way by thisevangelical surge. As we reflecton the past century, then, the storiesof the evangelical world church deserve to be heard.

This extraordinary compendium documents and illustrates themovement from what Edinburgh 1910 designated as ‘unoccupiedfields’ to what R. Winter strategically designated as ‘unreachedpeople groups’ thus repioneering frontier missiology focused on'finishing the task.

Peter KuzmicTwenty-first-century Evangelicalism continues to focus on frontiermission, but significantly, and in the spirit of Edinburgh 1910, it alsohas re-engaged social action. At the same time, however, theessays in this volume present a cautionary tale of overstating goalsand plans as they relate to proclamation and development.

Interfaith Relations after One Hundred Years:Christian Mission among Other Faiths

Marina Ngursangzeli Behera (ed)

Edinburgh 2010 has a specialrelevance for Christians in India, particularly when we consider thecontributions Indian Christianscontinue to make bothacademically as well as in theirday-to-day lives to living out andpromoting interfaith relations andinterfaith dialogue. For the typicalIndian Christian, living with aneighbour of another faith is adaily reality and this pluralismhas also influenced Christians inIndia to view ecumenism in arealistic and appreciativemanner. The essays in this bookreflect not only this acceptance

and celebration of pluralism withinIndia but also by extension an acceptance as well as a need forunity among Indian Christians of different denominations. Theessays were presented and studied at a preparatory consultationon Study Theme II: Christian Mission Among Other Faiths under thetheme ‘Interfaith Relations Among Other Faiths’ at the UnitedTheological College, Bangalore, India from 17th – 19th July 2009.Interfaith Relations After One Hundred Years: Christian MissionAmong Other Faiths contains material which it is hoped willcontribute to the aims of the overall Edinburgh 2010 publications,to be studied and reflected on both in the Church and for academicpurposes.

Mission and PostmodernitiesRolv Olsen (ed)

It is here, under these trees on mydesert island that this volume takeson meaning because its authors hon-estly struggle with and debate howwe should relate to postmodernities.Should our response be accommo-dation, relativising or counter-cul-ture? How do we strike a balancebetween listening and understand-ing, and at the same time explor-ing how postmodernities influencethe interpretation and applicationof the Bible as the normative storyof God’s mission in the world? Some may consider ‘postmoder-nities’ a Western dilemma. Thecontributions from some writersin the Global South (China, Indiaand Korea) unfold a larger canvasand explore the implications for Christian mission. This focus on‘mission’ is central: this is not just a book about the many facetsand trends of postmodernities. It is a book about the implicationsfor mission, for what it means to live as Christians and as churchesin a terra incognita, in a world where we have not been before. We know how postmodernities influence the understanding of thegospel, and how it/they may make Christianity merely one localstory among many. We have seen how ‘truth’ has become a pluralword and how we are left with ‘personal preferences’. Here is avolume to be studied under the trees, on how to understand, howto wrestle with and how to confront these challenges in a con-structive way, on various levels and in various parts of the world.Knud Jørgensen

The Church Going Glocal: Mission and GlobalisationTormod Engelsviken, Erling Lundeby & Dagfinn Solheim (eds)

Time will show whether the term(glocal) will establish itself as morethan a clever play of words. Thefollowing pages indicate that itmay well deserve to be adoptedas a meaningful ecclesiologicalconcept. In fact, it might havebeen coined already on the basisof New Testament ecclesiologyitself without the midwifery oftoday’s globalization. … The NewTestament church is… universaland local at the same time. Theuniversal, one and holyapostolic church appears in localmanifestations. Missiologicallyspeaking… the church can takecourage as she faces the

increasing impact of globalization on localcommunities today. Being from her very birth both universal andconcrete the church is geared for the challenging simultaneity ofthe global and the local. Our question to ask is how her dual naturemay best be expressed to enhance her continuous witness to Christ– locally and globally.

Jan-Martin BerentsenThis book provides thought-provoking and inspiring reading for allconcerned with mission in the 21st century. I have been challengedby its contributions to rethink our Gospel ministries in our new localcontexts marked by globalization, migration and with Muslims asour neighbours.

Witnessing to Christ in a Pluralistic Age: Christian Mission among Other Faiths

Lalsangkima Pachuau & Knud Jørgensen (eds)

The relationship of Christian faith andmission to other living faiths is a coreissue in contemporary mission. In aworld where plurality of faiths isincreasingly becoming a norm of life, insights on the theology of religiousplurality are needed to strengthenour understanding of our own faithand the faith of others. Even thoughreligious diversity is not new, weare seeing an upsurge in intereston the theologies of religionsamong all Christian confessionaltraditions. One reason is the‘discovery’ in the West of otherreligions living in its own midstand neighbourhood. One mayjustifiably claim that no other issue in Christianmission is more important and more difficult than the theologiesof religions. This will remain a major challenge for mission in a newcentury. ‘Christian Mission among Other Faiths’ was one of theEdinburgh 2010 themes. As part of the study process, positionpapers and case studies were invited from a wide range ofcontributors representing various theological positions, confessionaltraditions and denominational bodies. The quality of the studiesand the variety they represent convinced us to publish in this form. The position papers are reflections on the theme by scholarsbelonging to Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Protestant-Conciliar,Protestant-Evangelical, Pentecostal, and Seventh-Day AdventistChurches. Among the case studies are articles on Christian missionamong Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, new religiousmovements and folk or primal religions.

A Learning Missional Church: Reflections from Young Missiologists

Beate Fagerli, Knud Jørgensen,Rolv Olsen, Kari Storstein Haugand Knut Tveitereid (eds)

Cross-cultural mission has alwaysbeen a primary learningexperience for the church. It pullsus out of a mono-culturalunderstanding and helps usdiscover a legitimate theologicalpluralism which opens up fornew perspectives in the Gospel.Translating the Gospel into newlanguages and cultures is ahuman and divine means ofmaking us learn new‘incarnations’ of the GoodNews. This book is compiled bycontributions from young

missiologists from different parts of the world. It is written from the perspective of youth to be a fresh breath ofair into more traditional mission thinking and mission paradigms. The flavour of this fresh breath of air, coming from the youngergeneration, is “learning from others and from one another”. Howmay traditional sending churches and organizations see themselvesas receivers? How may we bring experiences from outside into ourown context? What may we learn across geographical borders –North learning from South, South learning from North, Southlearning from South? What can we learn from one another in aprocess of reciprocity? ‘Mission as learning‘ is not just a welcomeaddendum to mission, but a necessity if we want God’s Spirit toreveal to us some new dimensions of Jesus as he comes to beknown and loved in “every nation, tribe, people and language.”

Life-Widening Mission: Global Anglican PerspectivesCathy Ross (ed)

Each of the young Anglicans whowrite on the Five Marks of Missionwere at the Edinburgh 2010conference in June of that year. Thearticles were then reworked inToronto a year later, so what youread here is the fruit of much labour, writing, and rewriting. These articlesare also open and honest reflectionsfrom a range of young Anglicans ina variety of contexts. Here we seea glimpse of the strengths andstruggles of the AnglicanCommunion. There is no space forcomplacency. The title of the bookcreated much discussion. We hopethat this book may disturb, challenge, comfort and enrichyour life.

From the Preface by Cathy Ross

It is clear from the essays collected here that the experience of the2010 World Mission Conference in Edinburgh was both affirmingand frustrating for those taking part – affirming because of itsrecognition of how the centre of gravity has moved in globalChristianity; frustrating because of the relative slowness of so manyglobal Christian bodies to catch up with this and to embody it inthe way they do business and in the way they representthemselves. This remarkably gifted and creative Anglicandelegation at least had some claim to embody the ethnic, genderand age balance of the Communion. But what they write here givesus no cause for complacency, and these reflections will – or should– provide plenty of food for thought in the various councils of theCommunion in the coming years.

Regnum Studies inGlobal ChristianityIn the latter part of the twentieth century the world witnessedsignificant changes in global Christian dynamics. Take for examplethe significant growth of Christianity in some of the poorestcountries of the world. Not only have numbers increased, but theemphasis of their engagement has expanded to include ministryto a wider socio-cultural context than had previously been the case. The Regnum Studies in Global Christianity series explores the issueswith which the global church struggles, focusing in particular onministry rooted in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Not only does the series make available studies that will help theglobal church learn from past and present, it provides a platformfor provocative and prophetic voices to speak to the future ofChristianity. The editors and the publisher pray particularly that theseries will grow as a public space, where the voices of churchleaders from the majority world will contribute out of wisdomdrawn from experience and reflection, thus shaping a healthyfuture for the global church. To this end, the editors invitetheological seminaries and universities from around the world tosubmit relevant scholarly dissertations for possible publication inthe series. Through this, it is hoped that the series will provide aforum for South-to-South as well as South-to-North dialogues.

The volumes in this series are printed in paperback, unlessotherwise stated.

In the encounters of religions andcivilizations none is moreconsequential and more urgent thanthat between Islam and Christianity, and in that encounter nothing ismore fundamental than thequestions of the Cross, the Incarnationand the Resurrection of Jesus. Openand honest conversation on these isnot an option but a necessity asChristians and Muslims face eachother on a daily basis. The first of thethree volumes was on the Cross andwas published in 2009. The secondvolume appeared in 2011 andcovers the Incarnation, and thethird, planned for the end of 2012,is on the resurrection. The particularangle these volumes adopt allows

the voices of Christians to reflect onthese themes living as they do in thevarious ‘Islamic contexts’. Aparticularly useful resource forstudents and teachers interested inengaging with their Muslimneighbours with respect and honesty.

Naming God in Korea:The Case of Protestant

Christianity Sung-wook Hong

Since Christianity was introduced toKorea more than a century ago, oneof the most controversial issues hasbeen the Korean term for theChristian ‘God’. This issue is notmerely about naming the ChristianGod in Korean language, but itrelates to the question oftheological contextualization - therelationship between the gospeland culture - and the question ofKorean Christian identity. This bookdemonstrates the nature of the gospel inrelation to cultures, i.e., the universality of the gospel expressed in allhuman cultures. 2008 | 978-1-870345-66-8 | 170pp

Leadership and AuthorityBula Matari and Life - Community Ecclesiology in Congo

Titre AndeChristian theology in Africa can make significant development if acritical understanding of the socio-political context in contemporaryAfrica is taken seriously, particularly as Africa’s post-colonialChristian leadership based its understanding and use of authorityon the Bula Matari model.
