June 3, 2013 The Regular Meeting of the Board of Education of the Huntington Union Free School District was held on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Jack Abrams School, Huntington Station, New York. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL There were present Board of Education Members: Rogan, DiGiacomo, Hebert, McGrath, Paci, Palacios, Spector; Board of Education Members Elect: Dwyer and Fehrs; Superintendent Polansky, Dr. Card, Mr. Gergis, Dr. Giani and Mrs. Troffa. EXECUTIVE SESSION A MOTION was made by Mrs. Hebert and seconded by Mr. Spector to go into Executive Session to discuss negotiations and personnel matters. MOTION carried 7-0. Mrs. Rogan reconvened the meeting at 7:35 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Mrs. Rogan led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURE Mrs. Rogan discussed the exits to be used in the event of an emergency. SMOKE-FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT Mrs. Rogan announced that the Huntington Union Free School District is a smoke-free district and smoking is prohibited in all buildings and on school grounds. She also asked that all cell phones be turned off. APPROVAL OF BOARD OF EDUCATION MINUTES A MOTION was made by Mr. McGrath and seconded by Mrs. Hebert to approve the Board of Education Meeting Minutes of May 13 and May 21, 2013. The Regular Meeting of the Board of Education of the Huntington Union Free School District was held on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Jack Abrams School, Huntington Station, New York. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. ROLL CALL There were present Board of Education Members: Rogan, DiGiacomo, Hebert, McGrath, Paci, Palacios, Spector; Board of Education Members Elect: Dwyer and Fehrs; Superintendent Polansky, Dr. Card, Mr. Gergis, Dr. Giani and Mrs. Troffa. MOTION carried 7-0. COMMUNICATIONS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The trustees made several announcements:

Two concerts took place at Huntington High School. Community Day took place at Jefferson Primary. Relay for Life was an enormous success and the district raised over $150,000. Saturday June 8 is a rally for educators in Albany. Finley band and the High School Marching band participated in the Memorial Day

Parade in Huntington. Last week the annual Suffolk County School Superintendent’s Association

Valedictorian luncheon took place. Our valedictorian, Todd Colvin and scholarship recipient, Samantha Greenidge, were honored. The students and their parents attended along with Dr. Leonardi, teacher Michael Graziano, Mrs. Rogan and Mr. Polansky.

The lacrosse team had a great season and made it to the Suffolk County Championship.

Finley National Honor Society Induction took place. Thank you to the community for passing the budget. Welcome to our two new board members, Mr. Dwyer and Mrs. Fehrs. Septa’s fundraiser at the Bay Club took place. Mr. Polansky will be traveling to Albany to meet with Governor Cuomo on Tuesday,

June 4.

Mr. Polansky made several announcements: He and other superintendents from Long Island will be meeting with Governor

Cuomo on Tuesday, June 4. They plan to speak to him regarding APPR and the Common Core, among other things.

Please use our website, Jim Hoops and Andy Marlow keep it current. Also the district has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

Spring athletic teams were acknowledged for their great season. On Wednesday, June 5 the Suffolk County Inter-Faith Anti-Bias Task Force will

present an award to “A World of Difference.” Dr. Leonardi, Ms. DeCanio and Ms. Biagi, teachers at Huntington High School, and four students along with Mr. Polansky will be attending a breakfast where they will receive this award.

Summer reading list will be going home this week. Mr. Polansky updated the Board regarding the grant for the STEM Magnet School. It

is a federal grant and the fiscal year ends on September 30. It is possible that we may not hear until the end of their fiscal year. Mr. Polansky will explore other funding possibilities and other grants. The Board will place this on the next agenda as a Discussion Item. Dr. Card discussed other funding possibilities. The Sutherland Group will be holding a golf outing to raise money.

1st PUBLIC COMMENTARY

Members of the community were given the opportunity to address the Board of Education on items listed in Items for Discussion/Action. TENURE RECOGNITION A MOTION was made by Mr. McGrath and seconded by Mr. Paci to move item #5 in the Personnel agenda to this place on the agenda. MOTION carried 7-0. A MOTION was made by Mrs. Hebert and seconded by Mr. Palacios to approve H.5 on the Personnel agenda.

MOTION carried 7-0. Dr. Giani announced the names of those who were approved for tenure. They stood and were acknowledged by the audience. They were: Kitty Klein, MaryBeth Robinette, Lauren Baglivi, Victoria Lombardi and Gina Trigian-Molvaut.

ITEMS FOR DISCUSSION/ACTION Presentation – Recognition of Service – Outgoing Board Members/District Clerk – Mr. Polansky and Mrs. Rogan presented Mrs. Troffa, Mr. Paci and Mr. McGrath each with an award in appreciation of their years of service. 2012-2013 Board Goal Assessment – The board discussed the goals for the current year and for the 2013-2014 school year.
