RISKS & PROBLEMS
Insufficient resource and funding for Coastal Protection / Reforestation
Soil Erosion, Siltation & Flooding Lack of scientific data (research) as basis of
action Minimal public awareness on environmental
issues and concerns Lack of Alternative sources of income for
local communities Extreme poverty & socioeconomic status of
local communities Inappropriate land use / Land ownership Continued forest (upstream) & mangrove
denudation (riverbanks) Water Pollution Erratic climate
Mitigating Measures
Provision of ordinances and resolutions at the
barangay and municipal levels that will protect the project from human disturbances and threats. Signing of Memorandum of Agreement with various landowners for the protection and monitoring of the mangroves and associated species re-planted in their respective areas. Provision of harvesting standards for mangrove associated products and mechanisms to effectively monitor such at the barangay level. Community based mangrove reforestation activities; Unwavering political will and resolve on environmental preservation; Constant coordination with LGU and stakeholders and NGO’s; Community organizing and education; Introduction of alternative sources of income
PROJECT MULTIPLIERS Increased river biodiversity due to increased vegetation, feeding & spawning grounds Enhanced riverbank cover Enhanced micro-climate of the area (mangrove is a very efficient carbon filter) Minimized soil erosion Increased family income and living standards of local stakeholders Agro-forestry based industries to provide alternative source of income (nipa) for the local stakeholders Enhanced awareness on environmental and ecological concerns among the immediate communities especially the younger generations Revived the richness of the damaged marine ecosystem in Pulupandan Relieved over dependence of some stakeholders on nipa and mangrove products for livelihood Increased the success rate of mangrove reforestation activities along the Bago River bank Provided alternate sanctuary for marine life along Guimaras Strait
