FINELG Development The FINELG programme is a non-linear design computer program

based on the finite element method. For a given structure, it enables the design of:

- its linear behaviour, - its natural frequencies and its associated natural vibration

frequencies, taking into account or not internal forces, - its spectral response for a loading, such as seismic, for example, - its spectral response under the loadings from turbulent wind, - its critical loadings and its associated instability modes, taking

into account or not non-linearities, - its "actual" behaviour until destruction (and beyond) statically, - the vehicle-structure interaction in non-linear elastic dynamics.

A study of the actual behaviour of the structure provides the possibility of taking into consideration the following non-linear effects:

- large displacements, instability (distortion of the plates, buckling, buckling due to deflection and torsion, overturning of beams),

- the constituent elasto-plastic laws, - the residual constraints, - semi-rigid joints, - initial deformations, - the construction phasing: construction by launching or corbelling.

FINELG has a very complete library dealing with civil engineering structures: mesh bars, cables (with or without cable-stay behaviour), flat beams, space frames, plates, shells, volume elements, non-linear springs, non-linear bearings, linear or non-linear constraints. The constituent elasto-plastic laws available cover all an engineer's requirements for the design of a steel structure. Several laws are also put forward for the design of flat concrete structures. Mixed steel-concrete structures can also be simulated. For steel structures, the definition of the shape is much simplified, due to the use of a catalogue of profiles and the automatic choice of diagrams of residual constraints. Among other things, FINELG allows:

Page 21: REISCH COORDINATION ET OPERATIVE UREAU D’ETUDES …amivtac.org/vsip/assets/cv_vincent_de_ville_de_goyet2.pdf"Challenges and Risks in the Engineering of Structures", IABSE study day,

- academic research to be undertaken in the field on non-linear analysis,

- a simulation of the behaviour of laboratory-tested so as to interpret results better,

- parametric studies to be carried out to define or supplement sizing rules,

- the checking of complex structures or sub-structures for which simple design methods do not exist.

Background to Developments - Finelg was founded in 1974 at Liège University. Its development

was based on: - a set of doctorate theses, which provided the necessary

theoretical developments: - François Frey's thesis: "Non-linear static analysis of structures

using the finite element method and its application to steel construction." This thesis defined the general framework of the programme and the general theory of non-linear resolution,

- Philippe Jetteur's thesis: "Contribution to the solution of particular instability problems in large steel beams." This thesis allowed the development of FINELG's plate element, QSCRA,

- Jean-Pierre Jaspart's thesis: "Study of the semi-rigidity of beam-column nodes and its influence on the strength and stability of steel frameworks." This thesis allowed the taking into account of semi-rigid joints to be introduced into the programme,

- Vincent de Ville's thesis: "Non-linear static analysis, using the finite element method, of spatial structures formed from beams of non-symmetrical section." This thesis allowed the development of the theory of the non-linear analysis of structures on the basis of the co-rotational description and the finalisation of the non-linear space beam element, taking warping into account, within FINELG,

- Philippe Boeraeve's thesis: "Contribution to the non-linear static analysis of flat mixed structures formed from beams, taking into account deferred effects and construction phases." This thesis launched the bases for concrete design, including taking temporary behaviour into account,

- Hervé Degée's thesis, which introduced the taking into account of distortion phenomena in the beam elements.

- a wide-reaching set of research programmes, which have transformed the developments of the theses into design software suitable for a consulting engineer's use:

- BRITE-EURAM research, "Introduction of the phenomena of instability and of plasticity in a computer aided design project for metal construction", which has industrialised developments in steel beams. Research financed by the European Community

Page 22: REISCH COORDINATION ET OPERATIVE UREAU D’ETUDES …amivtac.org/vsip/assets/cv_vincent_de_ville_de_goyet2.pdf"Challenges and Risks in the Engineering of Structures", IABSE study day,

and three industrial partners, carried out in association with Liège University,

- FIRST research, "Digital simulation of the actual behaviour of flat structures in reinforced or mixed concrete", Research project grant-aided by the Région Wallonne, which has industrialised the development of concrete beams. Research financed by the Région Wallonne,

- DYNAMIX research, "Non-linear dynamic design of mixed structures", which introduced non-linear dynamic design and a study of construction phases. Research financed by the Région Wallonne in association with Liège University.

The FINELG programme is in continuous development in total association between Liège university and Bureau d’Etudes Greisch, either using their own funds, or research using doctorate theses.
