In independent university and Brick Industry of America studies, cement-

lime mortars consistently outperformed ASTM C270 mortar

cement and masonry cement types by a significant margin.

Compared to the other mortar types and mortars made

with clay and air entraining agents, cement-lime

mortar with Chemstar Type S lime delivered:

• Two to four times the flexural bond strength

• 20-40 times better resistance to water penetration

• 2-3 times the boardlife

• Excellent compatibility with all types of clay bricksand concrete masonry units

• Superior compatibility with white cement reducingflash setting

Page 8: REJECTED NOTE MARKINGS REVISE AND RESUBMITchalmerscs.com/uploads/3/6/1/4/3614373/tr-57-093000_tiling-nac.pdf · 2600 Foothill Blvd STE 304 La Crescenta CA 91214. PROJECT: Jefferson

When it comes to workability, boardlife, and sand carrying capacity, nothing is better than a cement-lime mortar with Chemstar Type Slime. And nothing enhances the quality and productivity of yourmasonry project like Chemstar Type S lime. By specifying ChemstarType S lime, you are providing your customers with the best flexuralbond strength and resistance to water penetration available. No wonder it is the market leader.

Chemstar sets the standardWhile cement-lime mortar is superior to other compositions, mortarmade with Chemstar Type S lime is clearly a cut above the rest.Produced from the calcination of high quality dolomite andsubsequent pressure hydration of the resulting quicklime, ChemstarType S lime meets or exceeds all applicable standards, including:

• ASTM C 207• ASTM C 206 (Henderson and New Braunfels production)• Uniform Building Code (UBC) standard 21-13• International Building Code (IBC) 2000, 2103.7

As a result of their very small size (1/100th of a micron) the Chemstar Type S lime particles have very special properties whichyield the following, significant benefits:

• Prolonged cement hydration for increased boardlife• Excellent water retention• Use of marginal mortar sand, as every grain is fully coated• Maximum sand yield• Superior workability• Improved mortar consistency due to high dispersing properties.

Chemstar meets the codeBuilding codes, including IBC and UBC standards, recognize theflexural bond strength of cement-lime mortars. Unreinforced masonrywalls built using cement-lime mortars are allowed by code toaccommodate a lateral load (i.e., seismic or wind driven) 67% greaterthan either masonry cement or mortar cement. In fact, masonry cementis not even allowed in seismic zones because of its deficiencies in bondstrength. Chemstar Type S lime goes a step further by helping to knitthe mortar to the masonry unit surface. This enhances the bond andpromotes the early hydration of the cement, assuring full developmentof mortar strength during the first few critical days.

5 Instructions

General Surface Prep

Surfaces must be structurally sound. Remove all grease, oil, dirt, curing compounds, sealers, adhesives or any other contaminant thatwould prevent a good bond. Glossy or painted surfaces must besanded, or abraded, and stripped of all contaminants. Concrete mustbe cured 28 days and accept water penetration. Concrete must be freeof efflorescence and not subject to hydrostatic pressure. Concreteslabs should have a course finish to enhance the bond. Plywoodflooring including those under resilient flooring must be structurallysound and meet all ANSI and deflection requirements. For questionsabout proper subfloor installation, call Technical Services. Smoothconcrete surfaces, existing glazed tile, terrazzo, or polished stoneshould be scarified. Sheet vinyl must be well bonded and stripped ofold finish. Roughen the surface by sanding or abrading, then rinse andallow to dry. Expansion joints should never be bridged with settingmaterial. Do not sand flooring materials containing asbestos. Ambienttemperature should be maintained above 50° F (10° C) or below 100°F (38° C) for 72 hours to achieve proper bond.

Bonding to Cement Surfaces

Concrete or plaster must be fully cured and must accept waterpenetration. Test by sprinkling water on various areas of the substrate. If water penetrates, then a good bond can be achieved; if waterbeads, surface contaminants are present, and loss of adhesion mayoccur. Contaminants should be mechanically removed beforeinstallation. Concrete must be free of efflorescence and not subject tohydrostatic pressure. Concrete slabs should have a course finish toenhance the bond. Smooth concrete slabs must be mechanicallyabraded to achieve proper bond.

Bonding to Lightweight Cement and Gypsum Surfaces

Lightweight or gypsum based underlayments must obtain a minimum2000 psi (13.8 MP) compressive strength. The underlayment must besufficiently dry and properly cured to the manufacturer’s specificationsfor permanent, non-moisture permeable coverings. Surfaces to betiled must be structurally sound and subject to deflection not to exceedthe current ANSI Standards. Surfaces shall be free of all grease, oil, dirt, dust, curing compounds, waxes, sealers, efflorescence, or anyother foreign matter. All Lightweight cement or Gypsum surfacesshould be primed with a properly applied sealer or a primer coat ofRedGard, consisting of 1 part RedGard diluted with 4 parts clean, coolwater. Mix in a clean bucket at low speed to obtain a lump freesolution. The primer can be brushed, rolled or sprayed to achieve aneven coat. Apply the primer coat to the floor at a rate of 300 sq. ft.l(7.5 sq. m/L). Drying time depends on site conditions, but is normallyless than 1 hour. Extremely porous surfaces may require 2 coats. Atthis point, RedGard can be applied to the primed lightweight or gypsumbased surface. Refer to the individual product data sheet or packagingdirections for application instructions. Expansion joints must beinstalled in accordance with local building codes and ANSI/TCNAguidelines. Refer to TCNA EJ171.

Bonding to Plywood Surfaces

Plywood floors, including those under resilient flooring, must bestructurally sound and must meet all ANSI A108.01 Part 3.4requirements. Maximum allowable deflection: L/360 tile L/720 stone.See TCNA F150. For questions about proper subfloor installation, callCustom Building Products.

Bonding to Wonderboard Backerboards

As an alternative to an additional layer of plywood, WonderBoardbackerboard may be installed over plywood subfloors for ceramic tileinstallations. Refer to TCNA F144. Call tech support when installingnatural stone over plywood subfloor (TCNA F-141-11 & F-250-11).Only appoved installation methods for stone.

Bonding to Existing Surfacing Material

Existing Ceramic Tile, Resilient Flooring or Plastic Laminates: Resilientflooring or plastic laminates must be well bonded, as well as clean andfree of all contaminates. Roughen the surface by sanding or scarifying;rinse and allow to dry. Do not sand flooring that contains asbestos. Forexisting well bonded ceramic tile, mechanically abrade the surface.Rinse and allow to dry. When sanding, an approved respirator shouldbe used.

Bonding to Cutback Adhesive

Adhesive layers must be removed, as they reduce mortar bondstrength to cement surfaces. Use extreme caution; adhesives maycontain asbestos fibers. Do not sand or grind adhesive residue, asharmful dust may result. Never use adhesive removers or solvents, asthey soften the adhesive and may cause it to penetrate into theconcrete. Adhesive residue must be wet scraped to the finishedsurface of the concrete, leaving only the transparent staining from theglue. To determine desirable results, do a test bond area beforestarting. Refer to the RFCI Pamphlet, “Recommended Work Practicesfor Removal of Resilient Floor Coverings” for further information.

Expansion Joint placement

Expansion joints and cold joints, as described in ANSI A108.01, shouldnever be bridged with setting material. They must be brought throughthe tile work and filled with an appropriate elastomeric sealant, suchas Custom's 100% Silicone. Contact Custom's Technical Services forthe proper treatment of control or saw cut joints. Refer to TCNAEJ171, F125 & F125A.

Mixing Ratios - powder to water

Mix 6 qts (5.68 L) clean water per 50 lb (22.68 kg) bag of mortar.

Mixing Procedures

Mix by hand or use a low 150 – 200 rpm speed 1/2" (13 mm) drill toachieve a smooth, paste-like consistency. Let the mixture slake orstand 5 – 10 minutes; stir again and use. Stir occasionally, but do notadd more water. When properly mixed, troweled ridges will standwithout slump.

Application of Product

Installation must conform to ANSI A108.5. Use a properly-sized notchtrowel to ensure proper coverage under tiles. Using the flat side of thetrowel, apply a skim coat of mortar to the surface. With the notch sideof the trowel held at a 45© angle, apply additional mortar to thesurface, combing in one direction. Press the tile firmly into place in aperpendicular motion across ridges, moving back and forth. Theperpendicular motion flattens ridges and closes valleys, allowingmaximum coverage. With some tile, back-buttering is advisable. Adjustthe tile promptly and beat it in with a beating block and rubber mallet.Periodically pull up a tile and check the back to ensure proper adhesivecoverage. If the material has skinned over (not sticky to the touch),recomb with the notch trowel; if too dry, remove and replace the drymaterial with fresh material. Material in the bucket will remainworkable for approximately 4 hours.

Curing of Product

Curing time is affected by ambient and surface temperatures andhumidity. Use the following as a guideline. Allow 24 hours beforegrouting or light traffic.

Cleaning of equipment

Clean with water before the material dries.

Storage

Store in a cool dry area.

Health Precautions

This product contains Portland cement and free silica. Avoid eyecontact or prolonged contact with skin. Wash thoroughly afterhandling. If eye contact occurs, flush with water for 15 minutes andconsult a physician. Do not breathe dust; wear a NIOSH approvedrespirator

5 Instructions

General Surface Prep

USE CHEMICAL-RESISTANT GLOVES, such as nitrile, when

handling product.

Exterior and wet areas must have proper sloping to drains. All surfacesmust be structurally sound, clean, dry and free from contaminants thatwould prevent a good bond. Newly prepared concrete must betroweled smooth and textured to a fine broom finish and cured for 28days. Existing surfaces must be scarified and leveled, and all defectsmust be repaired. Cracks exceeding 1/8" (3 mm) should be treated inaccordance with TCNA F125 or TCNA F125A.

Bonding to Lightweight Cement and Gypsum Surfaces

Lightweight or gypsum-based materials must obtain a minimum of2000 psi (13.8 MPa) compressive strength at the recommended curetime. The underlayment must be sufficiently dry and properly cured tothe manufacturer's specifications for permanent, non-moisturepermeable coverings. Surfaces to be covered must be clean, structurally sound and subject to deflection not to exceed the currentANSI standards. Expansion joints must be installed in accordance withlocal building codes and ANSI/TCNA guidelines. Prime all surfaces toreceive RedGard® with properly applied manufacturer's sealer or witha primer coat of RedGard®, consisting of 1 part RedGard®, dilutedwith 4 parts clean, cool water. In a clean pail, mix at low speed toobtain a lump-free solution. The primer can be brushed, rolled orsprayed to achieve an even coat. Apply the primer coat to the floor ata rate of 300 ft/gallon (7.5 M/L) of reduced material. When dry, applyat least one full coat of RedGard® to the primed area.

Vapor Barrier

When used as a vapor barrier, apply one full coat (20 to 25 mils wet)where vapor transmission is up to 8 lbs per 1000 sq. ft per day andtwo full coats (20 to 25 mils wet each coat) where vapor transmissionis up to 12 lbs per 1000 sq. ft per day. Refer to ASTM F1869 for moreinformation on Vapor Transmission Testing.

Movement Joint Placement

Do not bridge joints designed to experience movement. Carry thesetypes of joints through the tile work. Clean the joint and install an openor closed cell-backer rod to the proper depth, as outlined in the TileCouncil Handbook, EJ171. Next compress sealant into the joint, coatingthe sides and leaving the sealant flush with the surface. When thesealant is dry, place bond-breaker tape over the joint. Apply aminimum 3/64" (1.2 mm) of RedGard® over the joint and thesubstrate, following the instructions provided previously. Install the tilework onto the membrane, but do not bridge the joint. After the tilework is properly set, follow the architect's and manufacturer'sinstructions to fill the joint with a specified color sealant.

RedGard at Drains

Drains should have a clamping ring with open weep holes for thin-setapplication. Apply the membrane to the bottom of the flange. Thedrain should be fully supported, without movement, and should beeven with the plane of the substrate. Apply the RedGard membranearound drain. Embed a 12" x 12" (30 x 30 cm) fiberglass mesh into themembrane, making sure it does not obstruct the drainage weep holes. Then apply an additional coat of the membrane and smooth. Aftercuring, clamp the upper flange onto the membrane and tighten. Use asilicone caulk around the flange where the membrane and the upperflange make contact. A toilet flange can be handled in much the samemanner.

RedGard® as Crack Prevention Membrane

Force RedGard® into cracks with the flat side of the trowel, roller orbrush. Using a 3/16"-1/4" (5-6 mm) V-notch trowel or 3/8" (9.5 mm)rough textured roller. Use the flat side of the trowel and flatten theridges to form a continuous, even coat of material. The membraneshould extend a minimum of the diagonal measurement of the tilebeyond both sides of the crack. Gaps between plywood sheets andwhere floors meet walls must also be prefilled. For continuous crackisolation, cover the entire substrate with RedGard® applied to aminimum 30 mils wet-film thickness.

RedGard® as General Waterproof Membrane (ANSI 118.10)

Cracks to 1/8" (3 mm) should be prefilled before beginning thewaterproofing application. Lightly dampen all porous surfaces. Use a3/4" (19 mm) rough-textured synthetic roller or a 3/16"-1/4" (5-6 mm)V-notch trowel and heavily pre-coat the corners and the intersectionswhere the floors and walls meet, extending 6" (15 cm) on either side.

RedGard® applied in the above manner meets requirements of ANSIA118.10 without fabric reinforcement. For extra protection, embed a6" (15 cm) wide fiberglass mesh into the membrane for changes ofplane and for gaps 1/8" (3 mm) or greater. If using a trowel, spreadthe material with the trowel held at a 45° angle, and then flattens theridges. If using a roller, apply a continuous, even film with overlappingstrokes. An airless sprayer may be used for the waterproofingapplication. The sprayer must produce between 1900-2300 psi, with aflow rate of 1.0-1.5 GPM and must have a tip orifice size of 0.025-0.029. Apply a continuous film with overlapping spray. The membraneappearance is pink when wet and dries to a dark red color. It typicallytakes 1-1.5 hours to turn completely red. After the first coat turns red, inspect the film for integrity and fill any voids or pinholes withadditional material. Apply a second coat at right angles to the firstcoat. Periodically check the film thickness with a wet-film gauge.Combined dried coatings must be at least 30-35 mils thick. When wet,the combined coatings must be at least 60-70 mils and must notexceed 125 mils wet-film thickness.

Curing of Product

RedGard® is dry when it turns solid red, with no visible pink color.Typically, drying time is 1-1.5 hours; depending on ambient conditions, drying time can be as much as 12 hours. After the second coat isapplied and both coats are fully cured, the application area can beflood tested.

Protection

If tile or stone will not be set immediately after curing, protect theapplication from heavy traffic damage. Protect from rain and inclementweather for 72 hours after application. If delays longer than 72 hoursare expected, cover the area with felt paper. Care should be taken toprevent the application from becoming soiled or punctured during andafter application.

Tile and Stone Installation

5 Instructions

General Surface Prep

Tile or stone must be firmly bonded to a sound substrate, and settingmaterial must be cured a minimum 24-48 hours before cement groutis applied, unless rapid-setting mortars are used. See thecorresponding data sheet for the bonding mortars used in yourapplication. Remove spacers and ensure that the grout joints areuniform in depth and width and free of loose debris, contaminants andexcess mortar. Use TileLab® SurfaceGard® Sealer to seal tile orstone subject to staining or when using a grout that contrasts with thecolor of the tile.

Mixing Ratios

Mix 2 qt (1.89 L) clean water to 25 lb (11.34 kg) grout.Mix 1 pt (.473 mL) clean water to 7 lb (3.17 kg) grout. For 1 lb grout, see package for fill line indicator.

Mixing Procedures

Mix with a trowel or low speed mixer (less than 300 rpm) to achieve asmooth, lump-free consistency. Let the mixture stand (slake) for 10minutes, and then remix and use. Periodically remix to keep themixture workable, but do not add water, which can weaken the joint, cause color variation and possible cause shrinkage, cracks andpinholes. Discard grout when it becomes too stiff to work.

Application of Product

Installation must conform to ANSI A108.10. Lightly dampen absorptive, highly porous tile with clean, cool water, but leave no standing waterin the joints. Holding a rubber grout float at a 45° angle, completely fillthe joints. Holding the edge of the float at a 90° angle, remove excessgrout. At 70° F, do not spread more grout than can be cleaned within30 minutes of the grout firming and use as little water as possible forgrout clean-up. Using a damp, small pore grout sponge in a circularmotion, smooth and level joints and remove excess grout. Change thewater and rinse the sponge frequently. Haze can be removed after 3hours with cheesecloth or wrung-out sponge. If haze persists, theinstallation can be washed after three days with Aqua MixNanoScrub or after seven days with Aqua Mix® Sulfamic AcidCrystals or TileLab® Sulfamic Acid Cleaner. Perform a test in aninconspicuous area prior to complete application.

Curing of Product

Curing time is affected by ambient and surface temperatures andhumidity. For exterior applications, it is recommended that theinstallation is misted periodically with clean, cool water for 3 days.

Sealing of Grout

Use a pH-neutral sealer such as AquaMix Sealer's ChoiceGold or TileLab Surface Guard.

Cleaning of equipment

Clean tools and hands with water before the material dries.

Health Precautions

This product contains Portland cement. Avoid eye contact or prolongedcontact with skin. Wash thoroughly after handling. If eye contactoccurs, flush with water for 15 minutes and consult a physician. Usewith adequate ventilation; do not breathe dust and wear a NIOSHapproved respirator. If ingested, do not induce vomiting; call aphysician immediately.

5 Instructions

General Surface Prep

Tile or stone must be firmly bonded to a sound substrate, and settingmaterial must be cured a minimum 24-48 hours before cement groutis applied, unless rapid-setting mortars are used. See thecorresponding data for the bonding mortars used in your application.Remove spacers and ensure that the grout joints are uniform in depthand width and free of loose debris, contaminants and excess mortar.Use TileLab® SurfaceGard® Sealer to seal tile or stone subject tostaining.

Mixing Ratios - powder to water

Mix 3 pt (1.4 L) clean water to 10 lb (4.5 kg) grout.

Installation must confirm to ANSI A108.10. Lightly dampen absorptive, highly porous tile with clean, cool water, but leave no standing waterin the joints. Holding a rubber grout float at a 45° angle, completely fillthe joints. Holding the edge of the float at a 90° angle, remove excessgrout. Do not spread more grout than can be cleaned within 30minutes of the grout firming and use as little water as possible forgrout clean-up. Using a damp, small pore grout sponge in a circularmotion, smooth and level joints and remove excess grout. Change thewater and rinse the sponge frequently. Haze can be removed after 3hours with cheesecloth or wrung-out sponge. If haze persists, theinstallation can be acid-washed after 72 hours with a suitable dilutedacid.

Curing of Product

Curing time is affected by ambient and surface temperatures andhumidity. Use the following as a guideline. Periodically misting theinstallation with clean, cool water for 3 days is recommended.

Sealing of Grout

Use a pH neutral sealer such as TileLab Surface Guard or AquaMixSealers Choice.

Approximately 11 lineal feet (3.35 m) per tube at 3/8" by 3/8" (9 mm x 9 mm) joint width.

Approximately 25 lineal feet (7.62 m) per tube at 1/4" by 1/4" (6 mm x 6 mm) joint width.

Shelf Life When stored in the original, unopened containers at or below 90°F (32°C), LATICRETE Latasil sealant has a 12 month shelf life. Limitations Adhesives/mastics, mortars and grouts for ceramic tile, pavers,

brick and stone are not replacements for waterproofing membranes. When a waterproofing membrane is required, use a LATICRETE Waterproofing Membrane (see Section 10 FILING SYSTEMS).

A test area should be conducted when used with stone. Test sealant on small area to verify results.

Use LATICRETE Latasil 9118 Primer for porous stone and tile and for wet area applications. Conduct a test area to verify results.

Not for use in applications where physical abuse or abrasion is likely.

Do not use on or adjacent to building materials that may bleed oils, plasticizers or solvent materials such as impregnated wood, oil based caulks, green or partially vulcanized rubber gaskets or tapes.

For stone installations, test a small area to check for any fluid migration and to verify results.

Not a structural glazing adhesive. Joint depth should not exceed 1/2" (12 mm) thickness

(use backer rod for deeper joints). Joint width should not exceed 1" (25 mm) and be narrower

than 1/8" (3 mm). For perimeter sealing or expansion joint design, the ratio of the

joint width to sealant depth should be roughly 2:1. Cannot be painted. Cautions Consult MSDS for more safety information. Protect finished work from traffic and exposure to water until

fully cured, generally 24 hours at 70°F (21°C). Sealant must cure a minimum of 4 days at 70°F (21°C)/50%

R.H. prior to exposing to continuous water submersion. However, the other tile/stone installation materials (e.g.

mortars, membranes. grouts) must cure a minimum of 14 days at 70°F (21°C)/50% R.H. prior to exposing to continuous water submersion.

Maintain surface temperature between 40°F (4°C) and 90°F (32°C) during installation and for 24 hours thereafter.

Uncured sealant may irritate eyes if contact is made. Avoid contact with sealant until cured.

Keep out of reach of children. If uncured sealant comes in contact with skin, wash with soap

and water immediately. Always use LATICRETE® Latasil™ with adequate ventilation

and avoid prolonged breathing of vapor and prolonged skin contact.

5. INSTALLATION Preparation Clean all joints and surfaces to receive sealant, removing all

foreign matter and contaminants such as grease, oil, dust, water, frost, surface dirt, old sealants and protective coatings.

Metal, glass and plastic surfaces should be cleaned by mechanical or solvent procedures. Simple detergent or soap and water treatments are not acceptable. In all cases where utilized, solvents should be wiped on and off with clean, oil and lint free cloths.

When using any solvent always follow solvent manufacturer’s safety, handling and installation recommendations.

Application Substrates For Priming Use LATICRETE Latasil 9118 Primer for these substrates: Stainless Steel Sandstone * Metal Limestone (or other Porous Stones) PVC Fiber Reinforced Cement * Subject to testing and approval by LATICRETE. Actual stone samples to be provided for testing.

Swimming Pool Application: Use LATICRETE Latasil 9118 Primer for all permanent wet area applications. For underwater or continuous wet area applications,

polyethylene foam backer rod is recommended. Use polyethylene bond breaker tape on joints too shallow to accommodate foam rod. Polyethylene backer rod is “closed cell” which is water repellent.

General Installation Instructions:

Use polyurethane or polyethylene foam backer rod for deep joints. Use polyethylene bond breaker tape on joints too shallow to accommodate foam rod. These materials allow the silicone to stretch freely with joint movement.

Apply masking tape to the face of the veneer. Masking tape will allow for easier removal of sealant if it comes into contact with the face of the veneer. Sealant should only be applied into the joints, adhering to the flanks of the veneer. Applying the masking tape results in a cleaner look, and allows for easy tooling without affecting the face of the veneer.

Apply sealant into the joint, filling completely. Finish joints with a “Jointing Tool” when complete (within 5–7

minutes) for a smooth professional finish. Proper tooling of the sealant ensures contact with the joint flanks.

Remove masking tape immediately after tooling. Wipe any sealant off the face of the veneer immediately.

Cleaning Cured joints should be cleaned regularly with a neutral pH cleaner. 6. AVAILABILITY AND COST Availability LATICRETE and LATAPOXY® materials are available worldwide. NOTES

Since there are variations in all fired ceramic products, tile and trim supplied for your particular installation may not match these samples. Final color selection should be made from actual tiles and trim and not from tile and trim samples or color reproductions. Manufactured in accordance with ANSI A 1371.1 standards.

Water, oil, grease, etc. create slippery conditions. Floor applications with exposure to these conditions require extra caution in product selection. Not for use on ramps.
