ACTION AND REACTIONVOICE AND INSTRUMENT

These are the sum-up of the role of the percussions crowd within REKA V2. Three couple of words which I would like to explain better:

UNITY AND DIVERSITY: Each element of the percussions part regard ALL percussions playerand in a short time of rehearsals one of the most challenging tasks will be to create a united sound.By this I mean a collective interpretation which is a result of the different percussions, the diferrent percussionistsand their background but also the challenge of listening and feeling the others in order to express each one’s diversity, but also to strive to unity at the same time.

SOUND AND BEAT: Are more likely the most fundamental functions of the percussions. With a given beat you would be asked to form percussive patterns (or grooves, or rhythms), starting with just holding the beat till frenetic playing of precise parts that will be taught during rehearsals. But many parts will bebased on sound, unmeasured sections or tremolo sections in which the key will be to create a sonic background(=REKA in hebrew) to others and as an artistic element by itself

ACTION AND REACTION: Each element represent an action which should bring the most rich,unexpected and beautiful result. However, there are few reactions which will be asked during the score,especially reactions to the two percussions soloists on the stage: throughout your part you will find elementssuch as “echo percussions soloists”, “reflect percussions soloists” in which you are asked to listen and react musically at the same time.

VOICE AND INSTRUMENT: Most part of the score you will perform with your instrument/s.However, in some parts you would be asked to perform with your voice - especially rhythmic elements (a bit like tabla language or some indonesian rituals).

REFLECT / ECHO percussionsThese two elements will repeat more than once during the score.

REFLECT mean trying to play almost simultaneously what you hear the percussions soloists play and

to apply it to your own instrument/s. You can choose to reflect one of the soloists or both of them,

to reflect some elements or the entire section.

ECHO means to play chosen elements from the percussions you relate to, but with a decaying delay

(like a natural echo), repeating a chosen element few times with a constant lowering of the volume

and with some small variations.

REMEMBER: you are not alone in this work!

what will arrive to the public is the result of the totality of performers so please follow

these two guiding principals:

- LESS IS MORE

- LISTENING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN PLAYING

TREMOLOA tremolo is considered to be a rather simple element in the percussive world, however in REKA

the tremolo is adressed as the fundumental sonic layer on which other components apear,

“the groundfrom which they grow”, sort of speak. The 20 percussionists together with the conductor

will have the challange to create a unique tremolo for each section, both in color (which instruments

are playing and in which manner), the spatial effects (example: moving slowly from left to right),

its speed and so on.

BASICS - numbers & cycles:The crowd part, like all music, is composed of elements in time.

Each element in your part has a number from one to ten, that will be indicated by the conductor

with his fingers during the rehearsals and the concerts. After the conductor will reach event number 10,

he will trace a large circle in the air indicating a new cycle, that again will be from one to ten.

* In the first rehearsal, the conductor will invent a special sign for the Percussions Crowd and another for the Vocal Crowd,so you will understand if his/her sign is regarding your group or the vocal group.
