    1. Make the Effort toCommunicateBy having an easy dialoguewith your boss, you will make

    it easier all round, when toughtalking needs to happen. Infact, if you have therelationship, none of the

    discussions need be tough atall. Light requests come whenyou've made the effort upfront to get on well. This

    means appreciating everyopportunity to talk - andabout anything with yourboss.

    And thats not all we need ashuman beings. Social animalsthat we are, we need to feelloved a little. So its time for

    YOU to take the lead insharing the positives you'vegotten from your boss; howthey have helped you in your

    work, makes THEM feelgood. And when it's youmaking them feel good, theywill appreciate you - which

    strengthen the relationshipmore.

    3. Share SuccessesWhilst we believe that praiseis always best accepted (noneof this, oh, 'it's nothing' just

    go with it!), remember that agood boss will facilitatesuccess and achievement, yetoften step back from the glory

    (hmmm, well, some will!). Ifyou are able to acknowledgetheir involvement andsupport, they will be able to

    are only good because of thequality of the team theydevelop. Youre working withand in the team, facilitating

    5. Becoming a SolutionProviding, Problem-FreeZoneYour boss will be besieged

    with problems. Time to take adifferent tack! By havingideas of how to solveproblems and sharing those

    with them, rather than beinga constant whiner, will buckthe trend, as well as showingan example to others. You

    enable an evolving 'problem-free' zone in the team, yourideas are an advert for whatyou can contribute above and

    beyond the norm - you willbe 'noticed' positively.

    6. Ask for Their AdviceWhen you need somesuggestions about how tomove forward, you can still

    ask for help. 'I need yourhelp' is a great way to get it!An emotional plea that buysthem into YOU. It makes a

    difference to feel wanted.And your boss, just like you,needs to have that sense ofbeing valued. So be prepared

    to bite the bullet and ask,constructively and positivelyand then follow through withaction.

    7. Listen When They NeedYou Sometimes your bosswill get it wrong - and behorrified. At times like this,

    it works well to treat themas who they might notalways appear to be - aregular human being.

    Helping them throughdifficulties forms a greatbond. No need to begroveling about it, just

    positively supportive andon their side. Maybe no-oneelse will (though you mightbe the model others follow).

    8. Say No Sometimes Sort Of!Time will come where your bosstests you out, wanting rush-jobsdone. Now this is usually down to

    poor 'boundary' setting, which isanother article in itself. So youneed to say no when you can't.Even better is to say 'yes' and onyour terms. A piece of work

    impinging on what's important toyou, needs negotiation around thewhen. This is better solution asit helps develop understanding ofwhat needs to happen for the

    crisis issue to take priority - andsets a marker for how you willhandle such matters in future.And starts their training! Youcan start this right away.

    9. Be Demanding About You (abit!)Employees need to know how theyare doing. Its a bit of a challengingworld out there and if no-one tellsyou how you are doing you need tofind out. Sometimes a boss isreally good at this. Usually theyarent. their head is full of all sortsof tactical stuff they need to do and they forget about their people.Often this is because no-one hasever modeled what good looks likeand the real priorities in business.People. So by asking how theythink you are doing what theyappreciate about you and what youmight do differently, they willcome along and get better at it witheveryone!

    10. Behavioral changeIt doesnt happen all at onceand it can go wrong! If youtake your time keep subtle

    and keep appreciative of them,without the coffee-machineslogging off they usually get,you will make gradual and

    steady progress. Managersneed this trust me some ofus have been on the receivingend, very gently, and it doeswork.

    When you are playing with thefire of managing upwards, it abit like a male scorpion tryingto mate, with a big chance hell

    get eaten. Yet it is so vital!
