FROMTHEPASTOR’SDESK

“The Lord God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it.” – Genesis 2:15

On this Sunday before Labor Day, we have an opportunity to reflect on what the Church teaches us about the dignity of work. In the Catholic tradition, work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continued participation in God’s creative action. Work, properly understood, can be a place of great sanctity, giving expression to the deep yearnings of the human person; where people are permitted to embrace work as a cooperation with God’s creative power, the mundane can become transcendent. Let us give thanks to God present to us in the Eucharist as we toil for our heavenly reward. Let us give thanks for the human vocation to work, and strive to make our businesses, our communities, our nation, and our world places where the human person can fully thrive.Have a blessed and safe Labor Day!If you wish to reflect on the dignity of work please visit www.usccb.org to read the annual Labor Day statement from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Patriotic RosaryPlease join us every Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. to pray a Patriotic Rosary for divine protection and mercy for our Nation. Please enter through the connector.

CALL TO PRAYER:

MARRIED LIFEMarriage is a vocation to holiness. From their first days as husband and wife through their golden years, married couples have the awesome task of witnessing to God’s faithful love to each other, their children, and society. No couple does this perfectly, and everyone needs help when love feels strained and the going gets tough. All marriages can grow in knowledge, faith, joy, and love. Whether you are just starting out in marriage or have fifty years under your belt, the advice, real life stories, and Church teaching at For Your Marriage can help strengthen and bless your marriage. For Your Marriage helps couples at all stages of life to understand and live God’s plan for happy, holy marriages by providing educational and spiritual resources. Please visit www.foryourmarriage.org.

Come Home… Are you or do you know someone who is being led to the Catholic Faith? RCIA will be gathering and joining for fellowship and a deeper journey with the Catholic faith starting September 10.RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and is the process for becoming Catholic and accepting Christ and His teachings in the fullest through the Catholic Church. We’ll use our experience as an example of how we can address any real, local issue of poverty or injustice that calls for a Christian response. Kicking off with an exploration of Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI’s writings, this series will include an immersion experience, and opportunities to transform society by seeing and judging how the Vatican and U.S. bishops’ statements on the Church’s social teaching, can lead us to avenues for action through organized parish social ministry. Five Thursday evening sessions: September 13, 20, 27, October 4 and 11 from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at the St. Charles Center * Lower Level Lounge. SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 • TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

SAINT OF THE WEEK

ST. TERESA OF CALCUTTAMother Teresa, as she is affectionately called, was born Agnes Bojaxhiu to an Albanian family in what is now Macedonia in 1910. When she was 18 years old, she left her family and traveled to Darjeeling, India to enter the Loretto Sisters of Dublin. There she chose the name Teresa and was assigned to teach in a high school for girls. During this time, she was constantly troubled by the poverty that was evident around the high school. During a train ride to Darjeeling to make a retreat, she received what she referred to as “a call within a call.” She was to leave the convent and begin working with the poorest of the poor. Her order allowed her to follow her calling, and after taking a course in nursing for a few months, she moved to Kolkata (Calcutta), India. Volunteers soon joined her and in 1952 the city of Kolkata gave her a former hostel as a home for the destitute and the dying. As more young women joined, the order began caring also for orphans, the sick, alcoholics, and anyone who needed help. Over the next 40 years, Mother Teresa gave great love in the midst of a spiritual destitution called a "Dark Night of the Soul." This was a great penance for the saint; however, through perseverance in the love of Christ, she was able to continue the Work of God. She died in 1997 and was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II in 2003 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2016. Her Feast day is September 5.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWSNEW CURRICULUM FOR PSR! The Mission Effectiveness Committee (MEC) has selected a new curriculum for the 2018-2019 PSR year. Instructors will be utilizing the Spirit of Truth curriculum from Sophia Institute. Spirit of Truth is an innovative and teacher-friendly curriculum that provides the content and tools for our students to be formed as disciples of Jesus and knowledgeable Catholics. Parents, you should have received your PSR registration packet in the mail. If your packet has not arrived or if you are new to the program, please reach out to Missy Bennett at [email protected] or at 498-0433. PSR IS MOVING! Lots of new changes will be occurring for the 2018-2019 PSR year! Not only will there be new curriculum put into place, but new classrooms will be opened for our students. Classes will be heading across Water Street to the Religious Education Building. Our goal is to provide quality and engaging religious education programs to form our youth. The Religious Education Building provides us an independent PSR learning space for our students and teachers and a sense of continuity from the week to week instructional atmosphere. Sidney Police Department will be on-site for the entering and exiting of students to assure the safety of the students. In addition, a walk-through inspection by the fire department was completed to ensure that the program could be moved. Program logistics will be explained to the parents after the 7:00 p.m. Mass on Wednesday, September 5.We are looking forward to an exciting PSR year! It will be a year to celebrate the traditions of the past and to open our hearts to new opportunities. Let us embrace our young people and the future of the Church. Please pray for the PSR Team and our young people!
