remix evaluation

Remix evaluation My original genre source for my remix tracks was Pop. I chose an artist called Ellie Goulding, as I found her music provided me with several different ideas to remix with different genres. I chose to remix her two classic songs ‘figure 8’ and ‘lights’ in my preferred genre of Dubstep/drum and bass. The sounds from the original track can easily be incorporated into the style of Dubstep/drum and bass as they already feature; dark synths, prominent drum beat, a build up, several beat drops and electric guitars. When remixing Figure 8, I had no use of further dubsteps synths other than logic pro so I found it difficult to create the gritty bass sound when creating the drop of the track. I recorded in a normal bass and manipulated it through the pedal boards, the use of reverb and a lot of delay to create a ‘darker’ sound. I also changed the envelope of the sound so that the notes have variation. For example when the beat drops I need a sharp, loud sound so that the drop is easily recognised. Whereas as the track progress’ I need the notes to last longer to make the track sound fuller and provide it with depth. I liked the use of electric guitar in the original so I tried to keep it similar within my remix although I did tone it down because my main feature of the track was the drums and bass. For this track I decided to use a drum and bass beat rather than a slow dubstep beat as I thought it would suit the song better. I panned the drums during the build up as it enhanced the drop when playing simultaneously with another beat. When creating my second remix, as it was quite a slow BPM, my main thoughts were solely on dubstep. I started off by downloading external synths so I would have variation when I created several drops. My Drum beat formed the track and created a solid structure for me to build upon. Some of the beat was doubled up, for example when it came to the drop. Just to emphasise that a drop was occurring. I tried to keep it interesting and change/introduce something new every 8 bars. I used a lot of vocal effects on the actual acapella such as reverb,

Remix evaluationMy original genre source for my remix tracks was Pop. I chose an artist called Ellie Goulding, as I found her music provided me with several different ideas to remix with different genres. I chose to remix her two classic songs figure 8 and lights in my preferred genre of Dubstep/drum and bass. I recorded in a normal bass and manipulated it through the pedal boards, the use of reverb and a lot of delay to create a darker sound. I also changed the envelope of the sound so that the notes have variation. For example when the beat drops I need a sharp, loud sound so that the drop is easily recognised. Whereas as the track progress I need the notes to last longer to make the track sound fuller and provide it with depth. I used a lot of vocal effects on the actual acapella such as reverb, vocal transformer, synthesizers, echos and many more. I found this changed the track from the original and it was a main feature of my remix. Before I stared making my remixes I had to decide which genre of song I was going to choose to remix. I found that the further afield the track was the more impact the remix would have. By using an acoustic pop artist and transforming their music into a completely different area of the industry, I figured it would be easier to promote - as not many people would have thought to do it. Popular social networking sites such as Soundcloud, Twitter and Facebook could all be used to promote my remix and draw attention to the genre of music I create. I chose to pick a well-known artist to remix, as they would already have a lot of followers/listeners so it wouldnt be as hard to attract attention. By gaining likes from my tracks it creates traffic for a new niche in the music industry and it soon inspires other people to create tracks with a similar idea to mine. Remixes in general are used to explore different genres and change songs to create new, individual sounds. There are endless possibilities when creating remixes as you can make a brand new genre, new sounds, and different textures and gain inspiration. I can also take into consideration marketing strategies to attract traffic. For example you can use social networking (as said previously) in order to attract viewers. However this does come with limitations. If I was to share to 100 people then how many of them people will actually view it? Or how many of them people will share it further? So there are risks involved when trying to promote new music. Also as it is a new genre or a remix of a well-known song I will be at risk of not getting any likes due to no one previously hearing my music produced or whether or not theyll like the genre the song is now remixed in. If I was to over share the tracks it would become annoying to people and then I would get no publicity at all then there will be no chance of it going viral.Another marketing strategy could be to approach producers looking to sign new artists. This would be a successful strategy for me to create traffic as they would be professionals within the industry and as they know people it would be easy for them to promote my track. This would give me the chance to get my name heard as they would power together with a collected team of people and could promote through radio, social network, visual publicity (gigs, flyers etc.). It would also be beneficial for me as they would get plenty of traffic everyday and because Ill be signed or theyll play my music it would attract people to me as an artist. To create my own publicity once I have attracted some traffic I could then explore what strategies work when promoting my music. For example I could set release dates for upcoming tracks and use social media to produce a teaser so that people would be waiting for the actual track. Or I could make promotion videos taking into consideration both genres so that I can broadcast it to two different markets of traffic. I could also look at targeting my new niche market so that it covers a broad basis within the industry.Overall the best way to attract traffic is to analyse the music industry at the moment and see what marketing strategies are proving to be the most successful and then act upon them being careful not to copy exactly as it is good to be individual, especially when entering a niche market.
