Remote Learning for Safer Internet DayAges 11-14

This Safer Internet Day we want to support all settings and young people in exploring the theme, ‘An internet we trust: exploring reliability in the online world.’

With many young people now learning remotely, this document provides an overview of some of the resources provided by the UK Safer Internet Centre and their partners that mean all young people can join in the celebrations, wherever they are.

Education Pack for Ages 11-14

This pack includes an assembly, lesson plan and activity menu designed for delivery with 11-14 year olds. They come with slides to support with adaptation for remote learning. The pack also includes a document with social media and campaign activities. Educators are invited to pick and mix from the activities in the education pack and adapt for their learners.

Depending on your setting’s approach, you may wish to consider the following suggestions:

I want to do a live video session with my learners

Adapt the Lesson Plan and Slides for remote learning by focussing on the Starter and Activities 1 and 2. Start by asking learners to make a mind-map of what they have seen online that is unbelievable and if possible, discuss whether they went for things that are amazing, not trustworthy or a combination of the two.

Next, use the Trust-O-Meter (Lesson Slides 5-14). After each example give learners an opportunity to share their response, either by speaking aloud or using the chat function if available. You may wish to use Slide 15 and Slide 21 to finish the session or set the Dig Deeper activity for learners to complete independently. Share Appendices 1A-D (Slides 24 -27) with all learners so they can choose their own focus, or you could select for them. Learners can complete the appendix they choose by printing or annotating online/adding text boxes. You may wish to provide Appendix 2 (Slide 28) for additional support.

I want to make a recording and set follow-up activities

Use the Assembly Slides and Script to introduce Safer Internet Day and this year’s theme. The assembly is easily adaptable and can be delivered by screensharing. If you are unable to record your own version of the assembly, the UK Safer Internet Centre will release a recording in advance of the 9th February. To follow-up you could share the Big Questions from the Activity Menu. Ask learners to pick one to produce a short response to. This could be a written response or a short video.

I want to set learners an activity they can do on their own

Share News and Qs from the Activity Menu. Give learners a copy of Slides 7-9 and ask them to answer the accompanying questions to help decide what to trust online and introduce some of the key messages around this year’s theme.

I need to print content for learners with limited internet access

Share the black and white copy of the social media template from the Campaign and Social Media Activities document. Learners can decorate the page, and fill the magnifying glass symbol with words, illustrations or a pledge linked to this year’s theme. You could also print News and Qs (Slides 7-9) from the Activity Menu.

Other ways to get involvedParents and Carers Packsaferinternet.org.uk/SID-parentsWhy not share the Safer Internet Day resources pack for parents and carers? It includes activities, conversation starters and information to help parents and carers talk to their children about how to navigate the issue of reliability of information online in a safe, responsible and engaging way.

Pre-recorded Assemblysaferinternet.org.uk/2021/11-14In the run-up to the 9th February, the UK Safer Internet Centre will release a pre-recorded video “assembly” delivered by one of our education team, specifically for learners aged 11-18 years old. The video will be approximately 20 minutes long and can be shared directly with learners as a quick and easy way to engage with the event.
