Why do we care?

Remote sensing is interdisciplinary( widely used acrossmany disciplines) .e.g., GIS, Environmental science,Geography, Meteorology, Astronomy, etc

Source of employment in various fields1

Strengths: synoptic, global, all-weather, all terrain, safe, cheap (after initial investment),non-destructive, changedetection

Weaknesses: calibration/validation needed, initial highcost/risk, high data rates/volumes,indirect

Definition of remote sensing

Measurement or acquisition of information of some propertyof an object or phenomenon, by a recording device that isNOT in physical contact with the object or phenomenonunder study (Colwell, 1997).

Definition ...

ASPRSa adopted a combined formaldefinition of photogrammetry andremote sensing as (Colwell, 1997):

The art, science, & technologyof obtaining reliableinformation about physicalobjects & the environment, through the process ofrecording, measuring andinterpreting imagery anddigital representations ofenergy patterns derived fromnoncontact sensor systems

How far does the defination of remote sensing go2?

Remote sensing utilises sensors onboard sub-orbital (aircraft)or orbital platforms (spacecraft/satellites) to look:

Inward onto Earth: Surface,Oceans & atmosphere

Outward: to the planets, thegalaxies & even going back in

time: entire universe→ Cosmos

2As far as architecture, archaeology, medicine, industrial quality control, robotics & extraterrestrial imaging

Remote sensing as a Science

Science: broad field of human knowledge concerned withfacts held together by principles (rules).

Scientists generally feel that any subject that man can studyby using the scientific method3 and other special rules ofthinking may be called a science4

3an orderly system of solving problems4

Mathematics & logicPhysical sciences (e.g., physics & chemistry)Biological sciences (e.g., botany & zoology)Social sciences (e.g., geography, sociology, & anthropology)

Observe that ....

Remote sensing is a tool or technique similar to mathematics.

Using sensors to measure the amount of electromagneticradiation (EMR) exiting an object or geographic area from adistance and then extracting valuable information from thedata using quantitative5 algorithms is a scientific activity.

Is Remote Sensing an Art?

Visual image interpretation brings to bear not only scientificknowledge but all of the experience that a person hasobtained in a lifetime.

The synergism of combining scientific knowledge withreal-world analyst experience allows the interpreter todevelop heuristic rules of thumb to extract information fromthe imagery.

Thus, remote sensing image interpretation is both an art & aalertscience.

Information flow in remote sensing

The EMR reflected, emitted, or back-scatteredfrom an object orgeographic area is used as asurrogate for the actualproperty underinvestigation.

The EM measurementsmust be acalibrated andturned into informationusing visual & /or digitalimage processingtechniques.

Sensors can be used to

obtain specific informationabout an object (e.g., thediameter of a cottonwoodtree crown) or

geographic extent of aphenomenon (e.g., theboundary of a cottonwoodstand)
