What ICT meant to ourstudents…
The children thought ICT “ was the computer” which included…
•Using Word
•Surfing the internet
•Playing Maths, Reading and Writing games and games for fun
• Working independently

SO…
If this is what our
students think, what do your students think
ICT is?

This made us realise that weneeded to educate our students
about what ICT REALLY is and
demonstrate to them how theycan use various ICT tools to
enhance their learning, particularly in an inquiry.

The Steps We Took..
1. Kim Scott (GRITS ICT facilitator) came tovisit. She too could see that our children’s
ICT experiences were limited andimmediately came on board to help.

• She suggested that Casey (Gore Main Schools ICT lead teacher) and her work together to develop an
ICT Assist Programme, where some seniorstudents were trained to use various tools on thecomputer including publisher and WORD, toenhance their work.
• As trained experts these students would thenspend their lunchtimes (on a rotational basis)teaching junior students what they had learned.

This proved to be highly successfulas our students then began to use
these newly taught skills every dayin the classroom.
BUT… it didn’t stop there!!!!!

Casey was happy with this result butfelt more could be done to further
develop the students knowledge ofICT and their skills, as at thisstage the children still thought ICT
was solely about using the
computer.
SO…Casey then enlisted the help of her
friend/colleague Renata… aka me!

Casey briefed me on what she hadbeen doing and outlined her
concerns.
I took on board what she had to
say and together we planned a miniinquiry on worms.
This that would include her senior
class working with my junior classand lots of…
ICT!!!

To Conclude…• The students were surprised to learn
that there is one ICT tool they use on adaily basis, without thinking twice.
• In fact, you and I use this tool on a veryregular basis.
It is the good old …

The Outcomes of Our ActionResearch are …
• Our students now know what different ICT tools are, andhow to use them.
•Senior students have benefitted by having theopportunity to work alongside junior students and assistthem in their learning. They also know how to enhancetheir own learning.
• Junior students have gained confidence and knowledge in
using ICT tools.

• Ironically, our students have developed teacherlearner relationships between themselves
(senior-junior) just as we do with them.• A bonus is that friendships between the two
differing Year levels have developed and are nowevident in our school, particularly in the
playground.• Another bonus is that we (the teachers) have
got to know the children from the other classand visa versa.
• And we all know heaps about worms!!!
