Jane Brown, Conductor and Artistic Director

As a native of the arts-loving mountain communities of Northern California, Jane Brown has always had a passion for sharing the finest in music with everyone around her. She earned her Bachelor of Music, magna cum laude, in instrumental curriculum and instruction from Brigham Young University; and a Master of Arts in Music with honors in woodwind performance and conducting from California State University, Chico. After establishing a foundation as professional orchestral musician and music educator, Ms. Brown embarked on her career conducting symphonic music in the Spring of 2001.

Jane was appointed to conduct the Reno Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra and during her four-year tenure there, inspired more than 300 of Northern Nevada and Northeastern California’s finest young musicians. Under her leadership, this excellent group of students performed professional orchestral literature for over 23,000 people, including its highly acclaimed Young People’s Concerts for children.

In the Fall of 2004 she was selected to serve as the conductor and musical director of the Reno Pops Orchestra, where she had a profound effect on building every aspect of that ensemble and its audiences into a regional phenomenon.

In April of 2013 she was named as the conductor of the Ruby Mountain Symphony in Elko, Nevada and in July 2013 conducted the Les Misérables run with the Tahoe Players in Reno, Nevada. She has also served as the guest conductor of many honor bands and orchestras in Northeastern California and Northern Nevada.

Her most recent pursuits include studying conducting with such internationally renowned masters as: Gustav Meier, Mark Gibson, Markand Thakar, Diane Wittry, Joseph Gifford, and most recently, Jonathan Brett, Karolos Trikolidis, Guerassim Voronkov, and Alexander Polyanichko. In recent years she has guest conducted the State Symphony Concert Orchestra of Ukraine, the Maikop Philharmonia, the Bryansk Philharmonic Orchestra, the Astrakhan State String Orchestra, the Chelyabinsk Philharmonic, and the Arkhangelsk State Chamber String Orchestra; as well as two of the state symphony orchestras in St. Petersburg, Russia. In February of 2014 she was named as a Conducting Fellow with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra with Diane Wittry. Most recently, she is pursuing a D.M.A. in Orchestral Conducting at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Ms. Brown is a passionate and energetic conductor who inspires musicians to achieve their highest potential. She is known for her team-building leadership style, her enthusiastic work ethic, and her passion for audience-friendly, thematic, multimedia programming. During her tenure as conductor of the Reno Pops Orchestra and in her work with many other ensembles, she has played a key role in developing several innovative education and outreach programs which have brought musical exposure to orchestral music and inspiration to thousands of young people and adults in Northeastern California and Northern Nevada.

Retiring Cellist, Jim Tenney

Music, and his wife Elizabeth, are Jim Tenney's lifelong passions. Jim started piano as a child and later joined the Eaglebrook School band in 4th grade. He was handed a baritone and says that he struggled with it until the Parents Day concert. Even though playing brass and Jim didn’t agree, the timing was good: Sir Thomas Beecham, whose godson was in his class, conducted one of the numbers at that concert. This was a pretty big deal and a very memorable experience for a nine-year-old!

Jim took up the cello while in medical school, but says it was “easily two years before [he] could stand to hear himself practice.” He says he’s glad he persevered though, as playing with the Reno POPS has been a high point in his life.

Playing music went on hiatus during his time in the Air Force where he was an on-call physician at Cape Canaveral for the Gemini launches.

When Jim and Elizabeth moved to Reno in 1969, he unpacked his cello and played with the Reno Phil under Gregory Stone. When Reno Phil went pro, he had fun playing chamber music with friends instead, as well as participating in many summer music workshops.

Jim says one of his most daunting musical challenges was when he served as the organizer of the Sierra Summer Festival in Mammoth Lakes, California. For three years, he organized the four-week festival’s thirteen concerts--an event that attracted professional musicians from around the world to this remote mountain town in the Eastern Sierra.

When Jim returned to Reno in 2004, he joined Reno Pops Orchestra under the direction of the amazing Jane Brown. In addition to playing cello in the orchestra, Jim was also instrumental in helping the POPS find generous funding from grants and several private donors over the years to assist in purchasing badly needed instruments, such as our timpani set, and in funding several of our programs over the years.

One of our favorite memories of Jim's time in our orchestra family will be the big smile of satisfaction and joy that would illuminate his face whenever he would play one of the classics--especially Dvorak, for some reason. It was as if it were a dream-come-true for him.

Jim said, "playing with the dedicated and fine POPS musicians has been a joy. I will think of them fondly every morning from my piano bench. It’s been a great run!"

Thank you, Jim. Yes it has! You will be missed!
