REPRESENTATION OF GENRES, IN MAGAZINE PHOTOSLucy Clarke

Rock

These two pictures portray a rock music genre from all different aspects. The first aspect is lighting. The lighting is dark suggests their music may be dark and aggressive. The lighting hides their facial features and adds shading to their face, this may be to add a bit of mystery to them as a band. Colour is another aspect to these pictures. As you can see, there is a limited amount of colour in both pictures. The main colour are black, grey and red. These three colours resemble rock music and seems to be an occurring theme throughout rock music and can be seen on the front of many Kerrang magazines. Colour adds personality to a shoot which this band has left out. This gives the shoot a sense of numbness and sadness which again can in some ways resemble rock music. The two pictures are of the same rock band and both pictures’ Mise en Scene suggest the male in the middle is the lead singer of the band as they have made him centre of the picture and based the shoot around him. In the Right picture, it looks as if they have placed the bandmates in position of importance with the lead bandmate starting at the front as most important. Aggression and violence is the occurring theme throughout both these pictures. This is first noticed in the use of body language and facial expressions. You can see the anger in the bandmates faces as they are snarling and have their eyes crossed the person in the middle of the picture has his hand out as if he has punched the lens and smashed it. This gives a connotation of violence. In the other photo, it is still calm but the majority of the bandmates are exposing their tattoos. Tattoos can be a symbol of violence, aggression and thugs to society and the bandmates aren’t making a big deal of covering them up. This shows they agree with the stereotype of tattoos and continue to show them. This hints that this is what they stand for within their music. Lastly, the outfits on the left pictures signifies darkness as they are black. They also, along with the hair and makeup, over exaggerate the rock theme and the aggression theme as they are every overused, with lots of make up used. This explores the dark side to rock music and is to scare the readers and can show the viciousness of rock and the extremities that rock music can portray.

pop

This picture is of a typical pop boy band. The reader can notice the genre of music they represent by many different influences of this picture. Firstly, their outfit are quite colourful which could relate to the type of music they play meaning it could be fast and with a beat. They also are dressed in modern clothes, suggesting their music follows modern and up to date trends. There are elements of each of their outfits that pull them together as a band and make them look like a piece and match together well. They are all smiling which can show their vulnerability and could make them look more genuine which is a constant pattern in the pop industry which is more appealing to younger audiences (which pop music does appeal to younger members of society) They are all stood doing something and not just stood straight on, instead they are looking chilled out and playful in their stance. This could show innocence and youth for example, the person on the right is holding his own hand instead of standing straight. Second to the right, he is playing with his hair, this could show arrogance towards his appearance, which is something some teenagers can relate to. Lighting also makes them look bright and youthful and also shows no darkness on their face, meaning there is nothing bad about them or mysterious about them. Because they are dressed differently and stood differently, this allows their separate personalities and characteristics to show. Also their hair is different. However, the modern look and the colour theme in their outfits are the same to draw them together as a band.

This image is of a female pop singer. It could be noticeable to a reader that she is representing pop music from the clothes she is wearing. Firstly, she looks young as her clothes are bright, colourful and scream fashion to younger members. Youth can tend to get away with bright colours more than older people, as colour is a symbol of youth. Also she is young and exposing her arms and legs which is acceptable for a younger person to do this as you don’t see many older people showing their bare arms and legs. Her stance is young and girly, instead of standing like a lady, she is stood like a girl, this is portrayed by her arms being flicked out and her leg bent in. her style is chic and boho which would relate to young teenage girls. This style also makes her look young as she is not trying to look mature and seductive, instead she looks more sweet and innocent. Her trainers also portray her young age as it is more well known and usual for teens to wear high fashion trainers.

Classical

These images represent classical music and these are interesting to analyse as they are not the most popular form of music so they both need lots of detail more than the other genres where they can just rely on one or two aspects to represent the genres. The element to classical music is simplicity and this is portrayed very well in both images. For example, classical music is quite calm and chilled out compared to other music with a fast rhythm. The simplicity of classical music is portrayed through out these two photos‘. This is done by the background being quite peaceful and calm with no bright colours that takes away the readers attention form the main image. Both pictures have natural background which in theory, look humbling towards the reader. The simplicity of the background would appeal to the reader because it represents the styles of music within the classical genre. The props are the most important element in both pictures which represent classical music as they are instruments commonly associated with classical music this give readers a hint as to the genre of the magazine. The lighting is very bright to show innocence, brightness and happiness, again resembling the genre of classical music. Body language and stance are portrayed in both these pictures. Starting with the Janine Jansen picture, her body language comes across as elegant, rich and sophisticated, this is because she is almost thrown In a delicate sense over the chair as she holds her self in a sophisticated stance. The dress she is wearing outlines her femininity and the chair shows sophistication and wealth as It is gold and quite a statement piece of furniture. This highlights the classical genre of music as it is normally aimed at older people who be wealthy, elegant and sophisticated. The “Aston born to die” picture resembles a natural vibe which looks subdued and peaceful, almost laid back and peaceful like classical music itself. Their outfits are a bold statement to help the band stand out as this highlights their importance in the band.
