The Video Area and video-related events were held to comprehensively introduce video solutions, centered on SLR cameras which are in increasing demand, for professional photographers.

Video Area for Professionals

The popular Video Area for Professionals was set up this year as well, run by 14 companies dealing in video equipment and showcased an entire range of video solutions for the modern age, with everything from highly-practical products usable right away to much-talked-about equipment that inspire dreams. Visitors picked them up and experienced cutting-edge technology for themselves.

Cooperator: LIGHT UP CO.,LTD.

Professional video producers are focusing their attention on the mirrorless camera. It is smaller and lighter than the SLR camera, with smooth AF operations and unique features offered by each manufacturer. Therefore, we gathered all the new mirrorless cameras and studied the video function and performance of each camera.

Speaker: Hiroshi Shikano (Photographer)

DeployingChoosing the Appropriate Mirrorless Camera for Video Applications

Feb 28 (Thu) 11:00–12:30

Video storytelling is a method for expressing a story without using any dialog, narration, or subtitles. Even if you’re not working with a dramatic story like you might see in a movie or on TV, this method can build up a little story through filming and editing that draws out emotions from the people who view it. We introduced these techniques, complete with an abundance of real-world examples.

Speaker: Yoichi Sakai (Director/Cinematographer, HIGHLAND Co., Ltd.)

Lessonin

UsingRecommendations for Video Storytelling

Feb 28 (Thu) 13:15–14:45

High-sensitivity imaging functions of cameras have improved, and now beautiful video can be shot even in dark places. In addition, you can use the time lapse function to shoot dramatic and expressive images of the night sky and the stars. These are called night time lapse photos and they bring new enjoyment to photography. This lesson provided explanations of imaging techniques for use in dark places, focusing on the keywords high-sensitivity and time lapse.

Speaker: Soichiro Takemoto (Nighttime nature cameraman)

Lessonin

TrendsHigh-Sensitivity Shooting and Time Lapse Photography Techniques

Feb 28 (Thu) 15:30–17:00

There are now more and more cinema cameras at price points that are reachable for individual purchasers. Since these types of cameras can shoot footage in RAW and 10bit Log formats, colors and expression are even more refined than what you get with an SLR camera. This session focused especially on expressiveness of the colors and provided an explanation of these types of cameras for users considering making an upgrade from SLRs.

Speaker: Hayato Sone (Video director/Cameraman/Producer)

Lessonin

TrendsIntroduction to Cinema Cameras for SLR Users

As we enter the 4K era for SLR video, focus and brightness, the criteria used for selecting lenses up until now, are no longer enough. Factors such as resolution, light reduction, aberrations, and breathing (the angle changes in images when rotating the focus ring) must also be considered, and the number of perspectives required for selecting the appropriate lens is now much higher than before. This lesson considered the appropriate lens selection for shooting video based on actual imaging tests with a variety of lenses.

Choosing the Appropriate Mirrorless Camera for Video Applications Speaker: Hiroshi Shikano (photographer)

Professional video producers are focusing their attention on the mirrorless camera. It is smaller and lighter than the SLR camera, with smooth AF operations and unique features offered by each manufacturer. We shall therefore, gather all the new mirrorless cameras and study the video function and performance of each camera.

Lesson inDeploying

Recommendations for Video Storytelling Speaker: Yoichi Sakai (director and cinematographer, HIGHLAND Co., Ltd.)

Video storytelling is a method for expressing a story without using any dialog, narration, or subtitles. Even if you’re not working with a dramatic story like you might see in a movie or on TV, this method can build up a little story through filming and editing that draws out emotions from the people who view it. This lesson is an introduction to these techniques, complete with an abundance of real-world examples.

Lesson inUsing

High-Sensitivity Shooting and TimeLapse Photography Techniques Speaker: Soichiro Takemoto(nighttime nature cameraman)

High-sensitivity imaging functions of cameras have improved, and now beautiful video can be shot even in dark places. In addition, you can use the time lapse function to shoot dramatic and expressive images of the night sky and the stars. These are called night time lapse photos and they bring new enjoyment to photography. This lesson provides explanations of imaging techniques for use in dark places, focusing on the keywords high-sensitivity and time lapse.

Lesson inTrends

As we enter the 4K era for SLR video, focus and brightness, the criteria used for selecting lenses up until now, are no longer enough. Factors such as resolution, light reduction, aberrations, and breathing (the angle changes in images when rotating the focus ring) must also be considered, and the number of perspectives required for selecting the appropriate lens is now much higher than before. This lesson will consider the appropriate lens selection for shooting video based on actual imaging tests with a variety of lenses.

Skill Improvement Lecture for SLR Movie Sound Speaker: Jun Oosuga (videographer, musician)

For most photographers, studio operations like recording sound, music and effects, adjustments, mixing, and other audio-related video production elements can be a source of frustration. This lecture focuses on outdoor sound recording, sharing a wide range of tips and knowledge to help participants improve their skills for the necessary audio operations involved in making movies with SLR cameras.

Introduction to Cinema Cameras for SLR Users Speaker: Hayato Sone(video director, cameraman, and producer)

There are now more and more cinema cameras at price points that are reachable for individual purchasers. Since these types of cameras can shoot footage in RAW and 10bit Log formats, colors and expression are even more refined than what you get with an SLR camera. This session focuses especially on expressiveness of the colors and provides an explanation of these types of cameras for users considering making an upgrade from SLRs.

Speaker: Shigenobu Sugita, Canon Incorporation

F2.8 zooms have been the mainstream for large aperture standard zoom lenses with xed F-number for 35mm full frame cameras. Designing zoom lenses with larger apertures have been difcult with conventional lens mounts as it causes upsizing and affects image quality. The large diameter mount and short back focus of the EOS R system have made it possible to design this F2 standard zoom lens that offers stunning image quality. This keynote describes the technical outline behind this phenomenal zoom lens.

The development and characteristics of this interchangeable lens will be introduced mainly in the optical system.

9Development of HD PENTAX-D FA★50mmF1.4 SDM AW

Speaker: Shigenobu Sugita, Canon Incorporation

F2.8 zooms have been the mainstream for large aperture standard zoom lenses with xed F-number for 35mm full frame cameras. Designing zoom lenses with larger apertures have been difcult with conventional lens mounts as it causes upsizing and affects image quality. The large diameter mount and short back focus of the EOS R system have made it possible to design this F2 standard zoom lens that offers stunning image quality. This keynote describes the technical outline behind this phenomenal zoom lens.
