The DMACC Hunziker Center— Helping Students Achieve Their Educational Goals

A recent 9,000 sq. ft. expansion project added a computer lab, chemistry lab and six additional classrooms to the Academy.

Since opening its doors in August 2006, the DMACC

Career Academy Hunziker Center has provided

educational opportunities to nearly 10,000 students.

Each year, about 1,500 students from 13 high schools

participate in more than 65 liberal arts classes

offered by the Academy, earning credits that transfer

to four-year schools. It’s a valuable educational

resource for Ames and Story County.

3 | Ames Chamber Annual Report

As we look forward to the projects and challenges of a new year, let’s pause to reflect on our successes and accomplishments of 2015. With continued job creation, increasing capital investment and a thriving business community, it’s no wonder Ames continually lands spots at the top of national “best of” lists. We have built significant momentum this past year and we hope to continue to build on that momentum in 2016 as we work to make Ames an even more vibrant place to live, work and play.

We pay special gratitude to 2015 Board Chairs Pam Elliot Cain (Ames Chamber) and Steve Goodhue (AEDC) for their leadership to bring us to where we are today. On behalf of the Boards of Directors and staff for the Ames Chamber of Commerce and the Ames Economic Development Commission, we thank you for your continued investment and partnership.

We are grateful for the continued support of our members and investors and are appreciative of all you do to make Ames the great place it is.

Education Highlights

AMES DAY AT THE CAPITOL, which is famous for the Hickory Park lunch, provided leaders throughout Ames and Story County an opportunity to meet with Legislative Leadership, as well as a community showcase in the Capitol Rotunda in which sixteen sponsors exhibited. In all, over 600 ate and filled the Rotunda during the event.

Throughout the year, six LEGISLATIVE LUNCHEONS, one CANDIDATE FORUM, and one live radio show interviewing candidates provided members direct access to our local and state elected officials.

Exhaustive coverage and offering of resources and information for the 2015 School and City Elections. The Chamber hosted a live KASI radio broadcast interviewing each of the five Ames Community School District Board of Directors candidates and organized, in partnership with KASI, a CANDIDATE FORUM for the five Ames City Council candidates. Poll workers at Ames polling locations received treats compliments of the Ames Chamber.

Letters welcoming new residents to Ames and Story County and inform-ing them of their POLLING PLACE, their local, state, and federal elected officials, a voter registration form, a calendar of upcoming elections, and essential VOTER INFORMATION continued to be provided throughout the year.

With critical input from Chamber members and partner organizations, a comprehensive set of STATE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES were developed that guided the Chamber’s 2015 state advocacy efforts.

A strong and consistent presence at the Iowa Capitol throughout the Legislative Session allowed timely and comprehensive updates of the Chamber and our partner organization’s priority issues throughout the Session, including a comprehensive WEEKLY LEGISLATIVE UPDATE every Friday during Session.

A strong and influential group of fifteen Ames and Story County business, community, and institutional leaders joined us in WASHING-TON, D.C. for our 2015 FEDERAL PRIORITIES TRIP to advocate for the Chamber and six partner organizations’ federal priorities, covering over twenty policy issues. This year’s trip also included the integration of a mobile site and app, which allowed members of the delegation to access all pertinent trip information on their phone or mobile device.

Provided Chamber members information regarding PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES visiting the Ames and Story County area.

Welcomed our federal ELECTED OFFICIALS to the Ames Chamber of Commerce. Congressman Steve King visited the Chamber in May 2015 and Senator Joni Ernst in January 2016. With Senator Grassley visiting in September 2014, each of our federal elected officials has visited our office over the past year and a half.

The Ames Chamber and Economic Development Commission partnered to host the third annual ECONOMIC OUTLOOK LUNCHEON in November. Keynote speaker, Dr. Peter Orazem shared his insights into the economic trends for Ames and Story County in 2016. Over 170 members enjoyed lunch, networking and the economic outlook.

Engagement Highlights

Many individuals became part of the Chamber ribbon cutting team in 2015 by becoming AMBASSADORS. A total of 31 ambassadors had the opportunity to get an insider’s perspective of the local business com-munity, meet local business and community leaders and show our great Ames community pride.

THE ANNUAL EVENT is a combined event of the Ames Chamber of Commerce, Ames Economic Development Commission, Main Street Cultural District, Young Professionals of Ames, Ames Seed Capital, LLC, Campustown Action Association and Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market. It celebrates the accomplishments of the past year, and previews what is to come in the upcoming year. The 2015 Annual Event was held at The Gateway Inn and Conference Center in late January. With a game show theme, entertainment was provided by The Big Show, and featured a fun, game show audience interactive experience!

The first ANNUAL AWARDS LUNCHEON celebrated Annual Award win-ners from the Ames Chamber, Ames Economic Development Commission, Main Street Cultural District, Young Professionals of Ames and Campus-town Action Association. The event also featured keynote speaker Scott Siepker, Iowa Nice Guy.

Held at the Ames Golf and Country Club, the Chamber’s 2015 GOLF DAY provided an afternoon of fun competition for 144 golfers, loads of vol-unteers and all sponsorship opportunities for that day were full (for the fifth year in a row!)

270 members attended this year’s ANNUAL STEAK FRY to enjoy beau-tiful weather, meeting new and old friends and, of course, a great grill-your-own meal held both outside and inside at presenting sponsor, Ames Ford Lincoln. Live music and great food provided by our sponsor, Hy-Vee made it a great event!

The Ames Chamber was honored to be invited into over 40 businesses for RIBBON CUTTINGS to celebrate a grand opening, renovation, new location or anniversary.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS was held once a month at a Chamber member business. The event is free for Chamber Members and guests to attend and network. The event is held from 5pm to 7pm and free drinks and refreshments are provided.

BUSINESS AT BREAKFAST is designed for a small group of 6-10 mem-bers. Chamber members attended and got a 2-3 min shameless plug about their business while enjoying breakfast and coffee. In 2016, this program will change to a “QUARTERLY MORNING MINGLE & NEWS” format.

The three-part NETWORKING’S NOT NATURAL series highlighted ways to use the Ames Chamber member engagement opportunities to benefit and improve individual networking skills. Networking for some does not come naturally and can be uncomfortable for many, especially those new to community or industry. The series was strategically scheduled the hour before the Chamber’s popular Business After Hours event.

In 2015, the WORKFORCE SOLUTIONS PROGRAM become an even moreimportant program. One of the biggest needs of our members is a skilled workforce. The Main Street Cultural District wrapped up 2015 with many success-es for the organization and Downtown Ames. As the greater Ames community becomes an increasingly vibrant place to work, the MSCD is working to assure that the continued revitalization efforts position Downtown Ames as a valuable positive influence on the quality of life. A stroll through this central business district continues to boast improved storefronts, a healthy mix of fresh and seasoned businesses, and quality events that showcase the heart of the community.

A new event this year, MAIN STREET BIKE NIGHT, brought hundreds of motorcycles to downtown Ames in June! Bike owners and those who love to look at motorcycles, enjoyed an evening of live music, great good, and a beer garden. In 2016 Bike Night will expand to become a monthly event from May through September.

FOODIES & BREW was a hugely successful event for this year. How can you really go wrong with a sampling of local, craft and microbrews? Local restaurateurs cooked up their specialties to pair with the differ-ent brews. It was a great recipe for a fun summer evening in Downtown Ames.

4TH OF JULY was a great community celebration featuring NBA Star Harrison Barnes as the Grand Marshal and 95 entries. The parade, and its celebrity Grand Marshall, was covered by several national media outlets, including ESPN.

In July, the FIREFLY COUNTRY NIGHT concert filled Main Street for a world-class performance by country artist Gloriana.

MUSICWALK, the annual Main Street Cultural District business show-case, featured many musicians through the businesses and on the side-walks in Downtown Ames. This year we added sidewalk cafes outside many of the local restaurants to create a festival-like atmosphere.

ARTWALK was a great event that showcased downtown businesses as well as provided an interactive art experience for the community free of charge. Attendees met artists and watched their creativity in action. The District was alive with vendors, music and culture!

OKTOBERFEST has come to known as our signature event. Great music, authentic German food, a craft beer garden, polka lessons and competa-tive games made for a full day of fun.

SNOW MAGIC started in November with the community tree lighting ceremony and holiday season kick-off events. SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY is a promotion that reminds the community and visitors of the local benefits of shopping small. In 2015, Snow Magic included Par-ent’s Night Out shopping events, a ride on Santa’s Train, and an Old-Fash-ion Christmas Celebration.

Some of our other successes included coordinating nearly 5,000 volun-teer hours in downtown Ames, receiving a $75,000 Challenge Grant for the Sheldon Munn renovation project, planting and maintaining $6,800 in flowers and plants, developing a Main Street dining and shopping guide, installing 17 historic plaques on downtown buildings through partner-ships with other programs, coordinating shared advertising opportuni-ties for district investors, and achieving a prestigious 10-point accredi-tation through the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The Campustown Action Association continued to see new and exciting developments throughout 2015.

Three of the new mixed use projects brought new retail to the Campus-town area. THE FOUNDRY, an Opus development at the corner of Lincoln-way and Lynn Avenue added Starbucks and Campus Outfitters to our retail mix. While the Gilbane TWENTY THREE TWENTY project along Lincolway added Campus Spirit. The Randall Corporation brownstone on Chamber-lain was also completed before Fall of 2015 and brought Finesse Salon back to the Campustown area.

The KINGLAND SYSTEMS redevelopment of the corner of Lincolnway and Welch Avenue is in the final stages of completion of a parking structure and customer parking. This project saw Kingland able to move into their new Ames facility in November, as well as the new CVS Pharmacy grand opening in October 2015.

The CAA saw the completion of two pilot projects for the new Campus-town FAÇADE GRANT PROGRAM in 2015. The Cranford Apartment build-ing (home to Jeff’s Pizza) at the corner of Lincolnway and Stanton and the West Street Deli building on West Street. These two projects showcased two very different applications of façade reconstruction and successfully highlighted the diversity of architecture Campustown brings to the Ames community.

In 2015, Campustown Action Association had 54 businesses, organiza-tions, churches, and individuals throughout Campustown and the greater Ames community support the organization financially by becoming official INVESTORS of CAA.

As part of CAA’s goal to improve the customer experience in Campustown, “MAKE CAMPUSTOWN SHINE “ clean-ups were held each month, March through November with help from volunteers throughout the community.

The landscape of Campustown changed drastically during 2015 with four major construction projects, new retail as well as over 600 NEW RESI-DENTS in the neighborhood.

The fifth annual SUMMERFEST celebration was held on Saturday, June 6th as a day-long celebration of Campustown and the businesses and services available in the district. Over 800 people participated in the event, which included live music throughout the day, activities for families and kids of all ages, demonstrations, delicious food and a beer garden and a root beer garden.

MOVIE NIGHT IN CAMPUSTOWN was held on Friday Juy 10th and hosted over 250 people attending a free showing of How to Train Your Dragon 2 on top of the St Thomas Aquinas parking ramp.

4th Annual FRIDAY AFTERNOON IN CAMPUSTOWN was held on a perfect September 4th afternoon where a large mix of ISU Alumni and current ISU Students enjoyed the sounds of the Pork Tornadoes and enjoyed the CAA beer garden. This was a great partnership of student volunteers and Ames community members enjoying Campustown together.

The City of Ames and Iowa State University both supported CAA in 2015 with funding. THE CITY OF AMES awarded CAA with $27,000 through their Fall Grant Program and IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY awarded $25,000 in support from the ISU Student Affairs Office.

The fifth season of the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market was another suc-cess. The Market once again experienced a growth not only in Vendors but also in the number of visitors we welcomed each week. A total of 88 Full time, Occasional Vendors and Non-Profit Groups took part in the Market this Season, which is an increase from 66 last year. Weekly attendance averaged 3,000+ visitors.

The Market's FACEBOOK presence increased 1,364 likes bringing it to 3,681 visitors following every week and the page is still gaining new visitors.

The Market was able to TRACK VISITORS from the cash drawings that Greater Iowa Credit Union provided this season and we were very excited to see from the zip codes that we had visitors from 10 surrounding communi-ties as well as Ankeny and Des Moines signing up for the drawings.

It is exciting that with all the amenities that the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market has to offer we are accomplishing our goal of becoming a DESTINATION LOCATION on Saturday mornings for Ames and the sur-rounding communities.

In 2015 market organizers once again built on last year’s momentum and continued with the 2nd ANNUAL SALSA CONTEST, 2nd Annual CHILI COOK OFF and this year added one more Contest, the 1st Annual BACON SWEET & SAVORY CONTEST! Our People’s Choice Competition—where the visitors of the Market get to taste and vote for their favorite recipe for each contest—has become very popular!

The Market celebrated its 2nd Annual WATERMELON DAY where every-one who came to the Market was treated with a variety of free watermelon to celebrate National Farmers’ Market Week. Our Sponsor this year was Five Star Home Inspections.

The CHEF’S TABLE was sponsored by VisionBank and featured Chefs from Olde Main, ISU Catering, Mary Greeley Medical Center, and Greenbelt Bed & Breakfast along with a TV personality, Sheree Clark who has her own show called, Fork in the Road. Many other Chefs shared their talents throughout the season to help showcase the fresh produce, meat, eggs, fruit and many other local ingredients from the Market.

This year we again enjoyed a wide variety of great MUSIC from all genres. Thanks to the Music sponsor this year, Greater Iowa Credit Union we were able to showcase 2 local groups every week. Chairs were added near the musi-cians so visitors could sit and enjoy the music while they had their coffee or favorite treat from the Market.

One of our most popular activities were the weekly FREE CHILDREN’S EVENTS. The Meyer’s Petting Zoo and Pony rides, the Hovick Petting Zoo, and free face painting by Joyful Colorz were enjoyed by children attending the Market. Gotcha Games came and treated the children to Bounce Hous-es, Climbing Rock and Tubs of Fun throughout the year! We also enjoyed 2 Balloon artists, Becca the Balloon Lady and Doc Anderson who provided the children with endless delight.

The Market was excited to have ISU MARKETING join us this year. Visitors were treated to having the ISU Women’s Softball team, ISU Women’s Soccer Team, ISU Women’s Basketball Team and the ISU Gymnastics Team to meet and greet while taking pictures and signing autographs. The ISU Cheer/Dance Teams and CY were also visitors of the Market.

After being in the construction industry for more than 20 years, Brad Heemstra decided to create a new company, Integrity Con-struction, in 2007. Shortly after the start of the company, a major economic recession hit. Not only did their company survive the recession but has now grown to employ 17 people, including their two children who hold management roles within the company.

Brad is described as a “servant leader” who is supportive and flexible with his employees, encouraging them to be involved the com-munity and their families. He has gone so far as to help men in the community with prior jail time, by mentoring and employing them, and giving them a new start.

Brad Heemstra is also involved with Mary Greeley Board of Trustees, Master Facilities Steering Committee City Board of Appeals, Noon Rotary Club of Ames, Christ Community Church, Current Board Chair, Ames Home Builders Association, and Master Builders of Iowa.

Sarah Buck, Chair of Mary Greeley Board of Trustees said, “Brad takes great pride in serving the needs of the clients whose con-struction projects are entrusted to Integrity Construction. His high standards and dedication to meeting their needs are the hall-mark of the way he conducts business.”

His nominator said, “Tim is one of Ames’ biggest advocates, but he knows that there’s never a time to stop working to make Ames the best community it can be. He enthusiastically supports initiatives to bring more amenities, expanded development and quality professionals to Ames. His enthusiasm is contagious and is an example other community leaders.”

ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAREach year the Ames Chamber of Commerce recognizes an individual for his or her

creativity and personal initiative in operating a successful venture.

Terry Stark Chocolaterie Stam

Terry Stark has turned his small chocolate store into a destination location in downtown Ames, which has directly assisted in the growth of the Main Street Cultural District. Tour buses even stop in downtown Ames to tour Chocolaterie Stam, and in the process, visit other downtown businesses. Mr. Stark not only works hard to promote his own business, but promotes other businesses as well – even those in direct competition with his.

Despite the tremendous success his business has had, Terry became a small businessman quite by accident. He walked into Choc-olaterie Stam in Des Moines and thought to himself “Ames needs a store like this.” He met with the owner, who wasn’t ready to sell franchises. Terry let the idea go. It wasn’t until several months later that the owner of the original Stam called Terry and was ready to do business. From that chance encounter, Terry has grown his small chocolate shop to now employ 10 to 15 people. Terry donates his time and money freely to the community which has contributed to his success. He collects for Food at First and the local Women’s Shelter, he serves on the board of Main Street Iowa and the Main Street Cultural District, he is a member of the Cham-ber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. Terry has been instrumental in planning community events, such as Firefly Country Nights and Oktoberfest, bringing thousands of visitors to Ames. He is also the only outside vendor to sell Ames Education Foundation tickets, showing his support for local education. Terry speaks regularly to ISU business and entrepreneur classes, serves as referee for ISU Women’s Basketball and as Score Keeper for ISU Men’s Basketball.

Annual AwardsECONOMIC IMPACT AWARDS

Businesses of all sizes have the choice to put down roots in the Ames community or elsewhere. Our community continues to grow due to the commitment of those businesses that have made the choice to locate here, develop their operations, become part of the community, and expand their operations. In 2015 we saw the impact of three world-renowned compa-nies who continue to see the advantages of the Ames community and our surrounding area. This year the Ames Economic Development Commission recognizes three companies who continue to make significant contributions to the Ames and

Story County area through their business growth, job creation, and community involvement.

3M is fundamentally a science-based company producing thousands of imaginative prod-ucts, and a leader in scores of markets - from health care and highway safety to office products and abrasives and adhesives. The 3M Ames operations is a part of the 3M Abra-sive Systems Division and manufactures abrasive (sandpaper) used in the woodworking and metal working industries as well as the automotive aftermarket and home improve-ment industries.

This past June 3M celebrated their 45th Anniversary of operations in Ames. Their 324,000 square foot facility, located on 69 acres, initially began as a distribution center in June of 1970 and transformed into an actual manufacturing operation in 1972. Over time 3M has added numerous products to their manufacturing line causing the business to grow steadi-

ly in sales to customers worldwide, and also job opportunities at the Ames plant. Today 3M employs over 380 individuals at their Ames facility.

Through its management team and employees, 3M Ames has continued to provide support for local schools and non-profit agencies through leadership grants, mentoring, academic excellence, and gift-in-kind donations. For over 45 years 3M has shown strong support for the community and continues to make a significant economic impact on Ames and Story County!

Barilla is one of the world’s most esteemed food companies and is recognized worldwide as a symbol of Italian know-how. Barilla thrives by respecting its long-standing traditional principles and values, considering employees a fundamen-tal asset and developing leading-edge production systems. The company owns 30 production sites (14 in Italy and 16 outside Italy), of which 9 are directly managed mills that provide most of the raw materials for the production of its pasta and bakery products. The Ames facility produces dry pasta and includes an integrat-ed Mill that provides 100% of the semolina requirements for the Ames facility de-mand and over 60% of the requirement for the Barilla Avon, N.Y. production facility.

Barilla and the Ames community have had an excellent relationship that started with the opportunity to work with Barilla to plan their first U.S. facility in Ames, culminating with the facility’s opening in 1998, and a continuing partnership over the last 16 years.

In 2015 Barilla installed two production lines, raw material storage and the associated packaging/palletizing equipment to produce Gluten Free Pasta in the Ames facility. The project included a capital expenditure of $26.5 million dollars and addition of 23 new em-ployees bringing their total employment to over 160. This project was a key initiative for the company to add capacity locally to meet the demands for a growing Gluten free market in the U.S., Canada, South America and Australia.

Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., a subsidiary of Boehringer Ingelheim Corpora-tion located in Ridgefield, CT, and part of the Boehringer Ingelheim worldwide group of companies, is known as an innovative supplier of a broad line of products and system solutions for cattle, swine, equine and small animals. Within the Boehringer Ingelheim animal health business, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI) is an integral part of the corporation and acts as a center of competence in biological research and develop-ment at their Ames site in the ISU Research Park.

BIVI continues to expand its research efforts in Ames with successful collaboration from Iowa State University. After outgrowing their current space in 2015 the Boehring-

er Ingelheim corporate offices approved an expansion project to include a new $22 million build-to-suit 52,000 square foot building facility in the ISU Research Park. BIVI is also planning a capital investment of $2.8 million. The new building will increase laboratory space and ensure BIVI can remain competitive and progressive in their research and development efforts to deliver innovative solutions for global animal health challenges.

With the new facility BIVI will eventually increase its workforce to around 100 research employees.

Since 1999 Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. has been a recognized entity in the Ames area and like so many others they have been strong supporters of the community and continue to make an economic impact on the Ames and Story County area!

CAMPUSTOWN ACTION ASSOCIATION VOLUNTEER OF THE YEARThe Campustown Action Association’s Volunteer of the Year Award is given to an individ-ual who has performed above and beyond for the Campustown business district by volun-

teering their time and efforts to support the CAA and their work in Campustown.

Mike Adams Welch Ave. Station

Mike has been a staple in the Campustown community for over 20 years and has contributed in countless ways over the years.

Mike joined the CAA Board in the fall of 2013. He has attended all of the CAA Board meetings since joining the Board and always offers important perspective on issues in Campustown. With the unique perspective of late night in Campustown, Mike is key in identi-fying trends in student activities and has always meshed student safety with making good business decisions. He is key in guiding CAA to determine our role in Campustown late night.

Mike has been a part of the CAA Promotions Committee since he joined the Board. In 2015 Pizza Pit sponsored and Mike spearhead-ed the Summerfest Root Beer Garden. He procured all of supplies, set up, recruiting of volunteers and serving the community for the entire event.

In July of 2015, Mike assisted the CAA Director with Movie Night in Campustown by again providing volunteers to help set up, run pizzas to the guests attending the event. He also popped and donated all of the movie popcorn provided free to guests.

In September of 2015, while hosting a large event of his own at Welch Avenue Station, Mike was on call for whatever CAA needed to set up our annual FAC event. He once again provided all of the beer garden ID volunteers and stayed late into the evening to help with tear down.

CAA cannot exist without volunteers from our neighborhood. Mike demonstrates what CAA would like to have from every volunteer. His dedication and time to our efforts is greatly appreciated and we look forward to the opportunities 2016 will bring.

MAIN STREET CULTURAL DISTRICT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEARThe Main Street Cultural District’s Volunteer of the Year Award is given to an individual

who has performed above and beyond for the MSCD by volunteering their time and efforts to support the MSCD and their work.

Frank Randall The Salon

Frank Randall, owner of The Salon in downtown Ames, has been named the Main Street Cultural District (MSCD) 2015 Volunteer of the Year.

Randall served as the 2015 Design Committee Chair for the MSCD but does a little bit of everything in downtown Ames. He is often seen picking up trash, he headed up the volunteer group that planted flowers, he spent many hours weeding flower beds in 2015, he changed hundreds of bulbs in holiday decorations, and worked for events such as Bike Night.

Those who work with Frank say he is extremely dedicated, and while something may not be his responsibility, if it makes downtown Ames a better place, he makes it his responsibility.

In 2015, one of the “responsibilities” Randall decided to tackle is getting the lighting along the tops of the buildings in downtown Ames replaced. In 2014 the lights were dark during the holiday season and that just didn’t seem right to Frank. Frank spent over 100 hours of his own time researching lighting options and working tirelessly to get the project off the ground. There is currently a fund-raising effort underway to raise the $80,000 needed to replace the old dilapidated lights with new energy efficient LED lighting.

When he sees the lighting project complete, Frank will undoubtedly be on to the next project. He never seems to get tired of making downtown a beautiful place for the entire community to enjoy.
