Report about Shangal crisis and IDPs in Iraqi Kurdistan

After the crisis of Shangal and all violence against Ezidies people and controlling some areas

by ISIS, bellow is small update about the situation in general until 12th August, 2014.

In Duhok; 2500 Syrian refugees run to Duhok. IDPs of Mosul in general (Kurds and Arab) are

more than 4500. Shabak IDPs are 4000 people and Christian is 70.000 people.

Most of victims are minority religion groups, especially Ezidies in Shangal.

Ezidi Situation:

Some of escaped Ezidies people from Shangal mount said that about 1000 of people (kids

and elderly) dies because of lack of water and food. Despite the arrival of emergency aid to

some people and families in Shangal Mount but there are many of them until now suffer

from lack of water and eating. The rugged nature of the mountain led difficulties for people

and for helicopters as well to send aid to them. The people who are trapped in the mountain

through communication with Al-Mesalla said the mountain is too big and cannot connect to

each valley inside this mountain. Where the mountain is 75 square kilometers and

Helicopter did not reach emergency assistance to all areas inside the mountain, then many

people cannot walk to take water and food from far distances because until now a day, it's

more than 6 days they didn't eat and drink, some of people who contacted Mesalla inside

the mountain they said we are die, our child and family members, please help us.

Our ambassador and Ezidies volunteers yesterday called Al-Mesalla and were talking about

tragedy issues and real stories.

Zuhair from Sharia (one of Ezidies volunteers young people and activist) said that yesterday

some women who kidnapped by ISIS called directly by phone their parents and family

members (it seems some of them has hidden phones until now). The girl who called her

family said: we are more than 1500 women; ISIS put us in Badush prison (Badush is one of

the big prisons which located east of Mosul). She mentioned that ISIS informed them this

morning and said to them that ISIS is sending them to Mosul and putting them in Shia house

who left their house and ISIS are forcing women marry Jihadies.

These women who contacted her family this before one day ago said the women from this

prison starting to choke each other because they do not want to become under ISIS

anymore.

As they said to us that they are shouting for emergency support.

In another hand the situation of Ezidie's IDPs under difficult humanitarian, especially in

Duhok and Sharia. They are suffering from shelters, food and non-food aid. Many of families

now they are in the streets of Duhok and Sharia under the sun.

Today officially Duhok governorate announced emergency humanitarian state, because of

large number of IDPs in the city. Depending on Duhok province information the total

population of Duhok is 1,100,000 people. After Mosul and Shangal crisis there are more that

900,000 IDPs people live in Duhok now which means number of IDPs near the number host

community. IDPs are Arab, Kurds Ezidies, Christians and Shabak.

Pictures of Ezidies IDPs in Duhok and Sharia:

Mesalla conducted field visits to monitor the situation and their needs as follow:

Yazidi IDPs have almost about 250 Families for Yazidi Minority are all from Basheqa region

and located in the (Sami Abdul Rahman) park in Erbil and some them are on the street near

to the same park.

Kakaees Situation

Kakayees villages (wardak, Tolaband, Gazakan, Kolabo) near musul controlled by ISIS.

More than 10.000 became IDPs in these areas. Kawa from sufaya area (one Masalla's

Kakayees volunteers) he said Arabic people near Sufaya village and neighbors of Sufaya

already threaten us and they said they are going to attacked us as well.

Page 3: Report about shangal crisis and IDPs in kurdistan 12th august, 2014

Some of Kakaee villages near Kirkuk from Daquq areas left their villages and they run toward

Kirkuk.

Christian Situation

All Christian in Mosul became IDPs. Baashiqa, Al-Qush and Al-Hamdania controlled by ISIS

and people from their escaped to Duhok and Erbil.

According to our volunteers from Erbil Ainkawa is suffering from large number of Christian

IDPs and are suffering from emergency.

Because of bad security situation in Mosul and Shangal crisis in periods of 7-11 August,

including nearly 300 Christian families run to Sulaymaniyah and the approximate number

1,200 people. The majority of them have been placed in churches, especially in Maryousef

church.

During 4 pas days more than 20 000 displaced people went Sulaymaniyah. Governor of the

province of Sulaymaniyah yesterday said they were ready to help these families, but their

number is very huge and asked during his speech that it is necessary international

community and international relief organizations helping these families in the Sulaymaniyah.

The displaced people are Yazidis, Christians and people from area Makhmour also went to

Sulaymaniyah.

Page 4: Report about shangal crisis and IDPs in kurdistan 12th august, 2014

According to the plan of the province of Sulaymaniyah is distributed to displaced families

and district in the province of Sulaymaniyah.

According to Mesalla staff members who visited yesterday another sound is heard sound of

children crying, sound of people asking for help, sound of sadness, this is the situation in

Ankawa after displacing of 14000-15000 individuals from Bartela Qaraqosh and Hamdanya,

after controlling of ISIS on those areas, this large number of IDPs are distributed in schools

and churches, youth centers in Ankawa in ( saint Yousif church, om alnur church, Mart

shmuny church, Yazdandokht school, Shlama school, Saint Qardagh school, Ankawa youth

centers, Ashtar high school, girls high school), because of urgency of their situations youth

and father of church just tried to provide place of rest and basic need as food and water for

them, and because peoples are moving from one center to another thus until now exact

number of IDPs including number of women and children and other registration data are un

known in each center, but its estimated to be hundreds of people in each center and

children are majority.

During our visit to Saint Yousif church, and saint Qaradagh school, we note tragic

humanitarian situations, families sleeping in the garden, families with no help, old ages sick

children, and we also notes two type of families in the IPDs, some who have been displaced

from Mosull to Qaraqosh and then to Ankawa, and original people from Qaraqosh,

Hamdanya, and Bartella who came to Ankawa, those families are in need for all basic life

requirements, however families who came from Mosul are more in need because all they

have is their clothes, no money no ID no nothing, during meeting with those families they

were asking for all kind of aids but as all families that we met they were asking for milk and

dipper and clothes for children these three things was most asked for, along with other

needs as medications, tents and cash money.

Yesterday and today with collaboration by UNFPA Mesalla distributed 700 boxes of dignity in

Ainkawa and Bahirka comp.

All Shabka people from Mosul areas left their houses and villages. Many of them run toward

sauth of Iraq and placed in Shia cities. As our ambassadors informed us they are in bad

situation, suffering from food and nonfood support.

More than 140 families (785 people, the majority are child and women) were living in non-

complimentary buildings until yesterday inside Erbil at 100 meter street. Some people in

Erbil supporting them by providing food and other kind of support, but now Erbil

governorate established for them in Bahirka. They are suffering from emergency support.

Masalla with collaboration of Pax peace IMC before 2 days distributed some milk and dignity

on more than 83 children whom were in complimentary buildings in Erbil.

Arab Muslim IDPs Situation:

The official source from management of Rapareen area (Rania, Chwarqurna, Haji awa areas)

which located east of Erbil and west of Sulaymaniyah showed that 1324 Arabic family came

to Rapareen area, they from Mosul. In addition refugees from Makhour comp run to there

as well. 4000 of them replaced in Mosques and schools. They need emergency support.

The officer speaker of Rapareen (Hameed Abdullah) said that they offer for IDPs 2 solutions

and options, either replacing them in Skarta complex or in Bestana area.

In general during three past days 1300 Ezidies, Christian, Shabak and Kakaaee IDPs families

went to Koya city. These IDPs placed in parks, cities near Habat-Sultan, Marenaqadisha and

Koya palace. They are suffering of emergency aid.
