1.0 INTRODUCTION

This report seeks approval from the Learning & Leisure Services Committee for the disposal of avariety of North Lanarkshire museum collection objects in accordance with the Council's approvedAcquisitions and Disposals Policy.

2.0 BACKGROUND

2.1 In May 2010, members approved North Lanarkshire Council's revised Museums and HeritageAcquisitions and Disposals policy. The Policy was written in accordance with Museums, Librariesand Archives (MRA) guidance. This policy was also subsequently adopted by Culture NL Ltdwhich manages and maintains the Museum collections on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council.

2.2 Committee is reminded that section 3 of the policy provides guidance on disposal of items from themuseum collection and covers the circumstances within which disposals may take place. Noobjects from the collection may be disposed of without full investigation and subsequentauthorisation from North Lanarkshire Council. The policy states that 'a decision to dispose of anobject... will be the responsibility of the council acting on the advice of professionally qualifiedcuratorial staff.

2.3 There are a number of items in the museum collections which fall into one or more of the followingcategories; no connection to North Lanarkshire; in poor condition and no longer on display; in anincomplete state; or too large to store. Each item listed in appendix 1 has been fully assessed bythe curatorial staff within Culture NL Ltd on behalf of the Council and are now recommended fordisposal.

3.0 CONSIDERATIONS

3.1 All items will be disposed of in accordance with the public interest and in line with the Council'sAcquisition and Disposals policy and the Museum Association's Ethical Guidelines. The objectswill first be offered to other museums free of charge and their availability advertised in theMuseums Journal. An explanation of the reason for disposal is also outlined in appendix 1.

4.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

The Learning & Leisure Services Committee is recommended to approve the disposal of the itemslisted in appendix 1 of this report, in accordance with the Council's Acquisitions and DisposalPolicy and the Museums Association's Ethical Guidelines.
