Activities
GIS Day November 2012
Our student chapter was invited to participate in GIS Day at Colegio Patria.
Several optical demonstrations were performed and we talked about the
applications of optics in geography. Number of attendees: 30.
Visiting Casa Señarte January 2013
Casa Señarte is a school for deaf people, they learn the sign language and
perform a variety of activities. We were invited to give a talk about optics and
graduated studies. An interpreter helped us in this task. We were very
surprised because deaf people were highly interested. Number of attendees:

Optics outreach event at elementary school February 2013
We went to an elementary school and a talk about science was performed by
some members, at the same time we showed to the kids several
experiments, trying to get their attention. Optics was emphasized in this
outreach activity.
Number of attendees: 60.
Colegio Patria visiting CICESE April 2013
After our talk at Colegio Patria in GIS Day, they decided to visit us and learn
more about optics and of course, see our labs.
Number of attendees: 22.
The colors in white light
May 2013
Matematiké is a counseling math center. CICESE Chapter was giving a
outreach talk, some experiments were carried out to separate the colors of
white light.
Number of attendees: 40.
Beyond borders May 2013
This was an event organized
by deaf people in California
and Baja California. Several
exhibitions were set up at the
USA-Mexico border, at Tijuana
and San Ysidro. Some
members of our chapter were
learning the sign language for
a couple of months in order to
communicate with deaf people
and participate in this event.
Members had the ability of
explain the optics experiments
using sign language. A
memorable activity.

Ticalli visiting CICESE May 2013
Ticalli is an elementary school. Children of third year visited our institute and
they saw several optics related experiments. Now they know that optics is
everywhere.
Number of attendees: 18.
Optics in the mountains
July 2013
Three main education institutes in our city organized a science workshop for
high school students. CICESE chapter was invited to talk about optics and
show some experiments to attendees. This talk was performed in National
Astronomical Observatory at the mountains of San Pedro Martir.
Number of attendees: 40.
Summer school
August 2013
Summer School in Optics and Optoelectronics is organized by CICESE.
Members of our student chapter gave short talks about their research work.
During the summer school, the visitor students developed a scientific project
and at the end of the event their work was exposed, we awarded the best
presentations. The chapter talked about our outreach activities and the
benefits of being a student member of SPIE.

Optics+Photonics Leadership Workshop August 2013
Our officers Liliana Avalos, Iván Avilés, Claudia García and Gibraham
Graciano attended the 2013 O+P Leadership Workshop. In this workshop the
veteran officer Claudia García was invited to work as a volunteer facilitator.
Optics Outreach Games August 2013
Members Gibraham Graciano and Claudia García participated in 2013
Optics Outreach Games of SPIE with the experiment “Light yourself” a
demonstration of refractive index matching.
IONS NA-6/Ensenada September 2013
International OSA Network of
Students was organized by OSA
and SPIE Mexican student chapters.
CICESE was the venue of the event
and our chapter was the host. 77
works were presented in poster and
oral sessions.

Science week at UABC
October 2013
Each year, the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC) organize a
science week. They invite people from elementary to high school. This year
Claudio Valencia, teacher at UABC invited to our chapter to participate,
giving a lecture to the audience. Some experiments of optics were
presented.
Number of attendees: 50.
Optics outreach event at elementary schools October 2013
We went to four more elementary schools and talks about science were
performed by some chapter members, at the same time we showed to the
kids several experiments, trying to get their attention. Optics was
emphasized in this outreach activities.
Number of attendees: 240.
Seminarito November 2013
Seminarito is a space where a student member of CICESE Chapter gives a
talk about its research work in a relaxed atmosphere because only students
are allowed to attend. The main idea is give confidence to the speaker as
well as the audience and encourage them to ask with the freedom of no
advisors. It just started and it will be organized twice per month.
Recruitment and change officers meeting November 2013
A meal was organized in order to recruit new members to the student chapter
and celebrate the elections of the new board.
