Awareness Drive
It began in the month of September 2012 when we got an insight to Society of
Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), a society which promotes for
development and progress in the field of Optics and Photonics. An invite was sent
out to all the students for a gathering which was an informal talk about aspects
related to Optics its various uses, applications, developments and future. There was
tremendous response, and hence we decided to sow the seed to set up a student
chapter of SPIE at Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology.
Chapter Establishment
On 18 October 2012, an official approval from SPIE was granted and our student
chapter was formed. It was a very exciting day for all the students, which was
celebrated with a social gathering followed by a series of discussions. Various
topics were discussed including the mission of the student chapter, the events and
activities to be organized, long term and short term goals, plan for inviting guests
for technical lectures and inspirational speeches, speak-ups, and student and
community involvement activities, among other things. It was decided to have
scheduled weekly meetings in order to discuss developments and progress in
various fields of interest to the members.
Election of Officers
It was a rainy day when the election was held with contenders for multiple
positions in the student chapter. There was much anticipation among the members
but the results were declared without much fanfare. A brief speech was delivered
by each of the elected officers.

Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology
Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology (VJIT), Hyderabad was established in 1999
to impart quality technical education to the aspiring young students in the fields of
Engineering. The vision is to provide the nation with an institution that fosters the
development of imaginative, constructive, sincere and futuristic professionals.
VJIT has a sprawling and lush green campus with an area of 12 acres. State of the
art laboratories have the latest equipment and a pool of well qualified professors
who can provide a direction and orientation to the students in their learning process
to discover a path of their own and to learn from within. The students are trained
completely so as to make them competent individuals capable of handling their
careers and lives effectively.

Official Inauguration of the Student Chapter
Finally the moment arrived when the chapter was officially inaugurated. This was
a very joyous and proud moment for all the student members of the chapter. There
was tremendous response throughout and all the support and guidance received
from the college officials and our faculty advisor was finally bearing fruit marking
the beginning of a new dawn.

Day 1- I session
The first session was conducted by Prof. T. Srinivas, IISc. Bengaluru from the
ECE department. His speech was on MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems)
and MOEMS (Micro Opto Electro Mechanical Systems) which are inter-
disciplinary fields involving Electrical, Mechanical and Optics department. The
fabrication and synthesis of these systems were explained along with their real
time applications.

Day 1- II session The second session was conducted by Prof. K.C. James Raju, University of
Hyderabad from school of Physics. His speech was focused on Micro Waves. It
was a very engrossing session in which the various properties of Micro waves and
its diverse applications in today's world were explained.

Day 2 - I session
Prof. M. Sai Shanker during his presentation on LASER
In the first session a lecture was delivered by Dr. M Sai Shankar Prof. NIT
Warangal. The focus of his presentation was Optics and Optical Fibers and
LASERS. He discussed the fundamentals of these topics and explained in great
detail various uses and also gave a brief overview about the tremendous potential
for use in diverse applications. He touched upon many aspects in these fields and
explained finer elements in a detailed manner.

Day 2 - II session
It was the most exciting and most awaited session by all the students who were
eagerly waiting to get a glimpse of the practical applications. This session saw
demonstrations by Mr. P. Kishore and Mr. P. Vengal Rao both research scholars
from NIT Warangal. All the participants got a view of the various demonstrations
on display, including Fiber Optic Cleaving, Joining of two fibers, Fiber Optic
propagation, computing of light to optics and various other setups. Upon seeing the
practical demonstrations and experimental setups all the concepts and
theories explained during workshop sessions were further explained and well
understood by all the participants.

End of the workshop
This workshop was a great opportunity for all the students to get a basic
understanding of optics, photonics through a series of technical presentations
followed by practical demonstrations of the concepts. It expanded our knowledge
base and provided deep insights in to the various fields discussed. The students
also got an opportunity to interact with accomplished scholars and researchers
from various universities and learn from their experiences. A seed was planted in
the young minds by opening their mind to new ideas and inspired them towards
academic and intellectual pursuits.

Visiting Lecture Program
The guest for the program was Prof. Anand Krishna Asundi who holds these
degrees B.Tech (Civil), M.Tech (Aerospace), Ph.D (Mechanical) and is a Certified
Engineer (CE).He is a Professor in the school of Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering, Division of Engineering Mechanics, Nanyang Technological
University, Singapore. His teaching area is in Solid Mechanics and his research
interests are in optical methods in mechanics. He has published extensively and
presented seminars at various institutions around the world and at international
conferences.
Dr. P Venugopal Reddy (Director) addressing the participants

The lecture was delivered on the topic Optical Precision Metrology (OPM) which
is one of his current research subjects. Metrology is the science of measurement, in
practical applications it is the enforcement, verification and validation of
predefined standards for accuracy, precision, reliability and traceability, which are
critical parts of quality management. He stressed on the technological and
scientific importance of Optical Precision Metrology, the various research
opportunities and also very attractive jobs offered worldwide.

He also encouraged the students for pursuing higher studies and he gave a quick
outlook for those students interested for pursuing higher studies in Singapore. He
also talked about heritage and culture, the various courses offered, state of the art
laboratories, research opportunities and scholarships awarded by the universities.
It had a lasting impact on us which fuelled our enthusiasm, generated more interest
and strong willingness to convert it into reality. We learnt that with strong
dedication and focus we could achieve higher standards for us to walk into a highly
professional career.
