Action Works Nepal
Earthquake Relief Work Report 2015 (April & May)
On 25 April 2015 a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal with the epicenter at Lamjung. Dozens of aftershocks followed, including a 6.7 magnitude earthquake on 12 May 2015. It was the most powerful disaster to strike Nepal since 1934. Though the earthquake was felt all over Nepal but it has affected badly in thirteen district of Nepal. According to the Nepal Police official website, till now(9 June 2015) 8,778 people have lost their lives and more than 22,303 are injured, millions have became homeless and lost their beloved ones and now struggling to have basic needs such as food, shelter and drinking water.
Experience of AWON in relief work Action Works Nepal (AWON), one of the major program themes is humanitarian support. AWON had always proved to be with the survivors for their help. AWON team decided to help earthquake survivors though the team members were struggling mentally and physically in temporary shelter. The commitment to vulnerable communities and working in team spirit motivated to start the relief work in action from 27th May 2015 (3rd day of the first earthquake).
AWON mobilized more than 100 technical and non technical International and National volunteers for the emergency relief work in the field to serve earthquake survivors. The volunteers and AWON team are gearing with collective effort to provide relief to as many affected people as possible and, in an efficient manner. AWON has inclusive package of relief materials focusing

the various need of infants, lactating mothers, pregnant mothers, elderly people, people with disability, family in death rituals.
AWON had directly reach out to more than 1100 affected family covering 9500 population in Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchowk, Dhading, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Kathmandu and Lalitpur district. The disaggregated data of direct beneficiaries is attached with the excel sheet.
Food items: Rice, Bitten rice, Noodles, Mixtures, Salt, Super floor, Lactogen, water purifier
Shelter Kits: Tarpaulins, ropes, mattress, blankets
Kitchen Items: Rice pots, frying pan, water bucket, dinner plates
Clothing: Special attention for clothes to pregnant mother, lactating mothers, infants, elderly people, family in death rituals and teenage girls (with inner garments, baby blankets, sanitary pad, warm clothes)
Sanitation Kits: Soap (washing and bathing), tooth paste and brush, water filter, phenyl, chlorine tablets
First Aid Kits: 15 types of essential medicines (listed by MOPH) with sanitary pads and soap, water purifier (provided with instruction guide and orientation)
General Health Camp (One day): A team of experienced Senior Nurses

(National and International) were deployed with basic medicines, treatment of injuries, counseling support
Residential Health Camp (5 days): A team with General Physician Doctors, physiotherapist, staff nurses non technical volunteers all together (13 members) were deployed.
27th April 2015 AWON team distributed noodles, drinking water and biscuits for 50 people in landless communities residing in the bank of Bagamati river of Thapathali. 29th April 2015 AWON team organized meeting for emergency response to mostly affected area. The meeting decided to make an Emergency Response Committee (ERC) with a leadership of Founder, President Radha Paudel. (Though Ms. Paudel was in Jumla she was connecting with us via phone and commit to join team as early as possible). Team decided to deploy staff, volunteers (regarding technical and non technical staff) for relief work in mostly affected part outside valley. AWON team visited TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj and coordinate with Nursing Director, Kopila Palek Shrestha to support the team in this crisis time.

30th April 2015 AWON team started purchasing, collecting relief materials and call for various technical and non technical volunteers through its network, social sites and websites. As per the request from TU Teaching Hospital 5 BSC Nurses were provided to support for three weeks, 10 BP instruments. 1st May 2015 AWON coordinating with Ministry of Public Health, District Public Health Office, and District Disaster Risk Reduction Committee (DDRC) supported relief items; food and non food items, first aid kits. AWON relief team was lead by Ms. Radha Paudel and Mr. Bharat Wasti. AWON deployed more than 60 volunteers and staff for relief work. AWON supported 87 HHs of Shipapokhari village development committee, Bhandarithok village where 95% houses were collapsed; people were living under open sky. 2nd May 2015 AWON gained field experience in relief work from field visit and found lots of needy village, people who didn't get any relief from any organization or government. AWON team decided to support two more mostly affected village with the Indigenous communities. AWON provided support to SipaPokhari Village Development Committee, Gairee Gaun Mija tole ward no 4 with total household of 67 of which 53 HHs were from Tamang, 13 HHs were Dalits and 1 HH was Chhetri. The total population of the village was near to 600. AWON distributed 67 sets of relief items with food items, non food items first aid kits. 3rd May 2015 AWON deployed two emergency relief team to Kavre district. One team visited Dewapur Gairi Bisaune ward no. 6, 3 with the total household 43 covering 300

populations. AWON distributed relief materials with total package for 43 houses. Another team visited Anaikot 6 (recently Panchkhal 12) and supported to 54 needy HHs with total population of 315 with relief materials. 4th May 2015: AWON one emergency relief team with one day health camp reached Jivanpur VDC ward no# 3 in Dhanding district with complete relief package. Supported directly to 70 families with total population of 400. The village was mix communities from Brahmins and Dalits. Through one day Health Camp 40 people were provided general treatment. 5th May 2015: One emergency relief team with one day health camp reached to Thungpakhar VDC, ward no# 7 Basnet Gaun with complete relief package. Supported directly to 45 families with total population of 250. The village was mix communities with Dalits and Chhetri (high caste). 62 people of the village were provided treatment through general health camp. 7th May 2015: Two emergency relief team with one day health camp reached to Virkot of Dolakha and Deurali of Ramechhap district. AWON one team supported to most needy 133 Dalit and Indigenous familiesin virkot and another team supported to most needy 100 families of Deurali. The community was from Dalits and Indigenous. 73 People in Virkot and 62 people in Deurali were provided treatment through health camp.

11th May 2015: One emergency relief team with one day general health camp reached to Nayagaun of Kavrepalanchowk district. The team supported to most needy 65 families with complete package of relief items. 70 people were provided treatment through health camp. 15th May 2015 One emergency relief team with one day general health camp reached to Namdu village of Dolakha. Three medical doctors from TATA Institute of Health Science provided treatment to 100 people through health camp.
Residential Health Camp (9th May to 14th May 2015): AWON in coordination with Ministry of Public Health and DDRC of
Kavrepalanchowk deployed a medical team in very remote area, Banakhuchor VDC. There were two International female
doctors from USA with experience of working in emergency in various countries. The medical team was accompanied by two Nepalese nurses from UK and one senior nurse from Nepal. All together there were 13 members in team, the team reached crossing various difficulties on the way with 6 hours drive and 6 hours walk from Kathmandu. 350 people were provided treatment in the health camp. The team provided health check up, medicines, counseling support to the visitors. The observation of the physician reflects that

majority of people specially women, elderly people and children were suffering from the psychosocial problems and were traumatize due to the fear of earthquake. Almost all women were suffering from anemia and anxiety. The major health problems was psychosocial problem, anemia, eye infection, joint pain, uterus prolapsed. Residential Health Camp (22nd May to 25th May 2015): Realizing the needs of heath care in remote area of Kavrepalanchowk district. AWON health team moved to Ghartichhap VDC for residential health camp. There were two Nepalese doctors three medical nurses in the team altogether 13 members were in the team. The team chases all the challenges on the way over there. Finally 360 people were benefited from the general health check up, medicines, counseling services.

Supportive Hands/Agencies for Relief Work to AWON
Action Works Nepal (AWON), one of the major themes is humanitarian support and right after the 3rd day of the deadly and devastating earthquake AWON team decided to support the earthquake survivors. For this AWON team were supported by different national and international organizations; individuals; government by providing monetary as well as non monetary help. AWON teams were supported by different relief materials including medicines.
