The Master’s thank you

Once again, the generosity of Univ Old Members has surpassed previous records. In addition to wonderful benefactions for history fellowships and for bursaries this year, the Annual Fund campaign raised the largest sum in its history, thanks to contributions big and small from over a third of all our alumni, by far the highest rate of giving of any Oxford college or indeed higher education institution outside North America.

We are enormously grateful for this vote of confidence in the College, particularly at a time of exceptional economic uncertainty for all of us. We are also indebted to the many of you who have given their time for the College as trustees, advisers, fund raisers and hosts. Donors and volunteers alike are immeasurably important to the fabric of Univ life.

REPORT OF GIFTS & ROLL OF DONORS 2010/11

Univ is determined to give its undergraduates and graduates an education that matches or exceeds the experience of previous generations. Donations are spent on the features of College life that make it special - the preservation of the tutorial system, the appointment of leading scholars and scientists as teachers, and bursaries and scholarships to ensure as far as we can that nobody is deterred from studying at Univ on financial grounds. It is often quite small extras that make a big difference. One of the themes to emerge from our annual survey of departing finalists was the spontaneous appreciation expressed by those from low-income households for vacation grants to study (Univ is the only college with a scheme of this kind). “It made all the difference” wrote one after another. The College Financials

In many respects, the College’s finances are currently in a healthy condition.

Over the last ten years, with the assistance of Old Members, the College has more or less doubled its capital. Our investment assets (endowment plus cash reserves) amounted to £59.2m (at 30/9/2001) and £112.1m (at 30/9/2011), having also spent £5.3m (net of asset sales) on capital expenditure on our premises in that period. We run at a surplus, albeit lower than it needs to be to finance capital expenditure.

Our balance sheet is strong, with no debt and over £115m (end

November 2011) of investment assets.

The premises are in much better condition than ten years ago, when the main site had a substantial backlog of maintenance. We have dealt with the backlog and also the kitchen and boathouse, though the 1970s buildings (Goodhart, Staverton) are still ahead as expensive tasks.

Our investment capital is intact so far, despite the global economic crisis.

From the inception of the Investment Committee (July 2002) until our year end 31/7/2011 the total return on our investments was 9.6% p.a. (6.4% p.a. after inflation).

That said, we face, as everyone does, substantial challenges from the effects of the global financial crisis. Our investments are conservatively structured; we try to take very little for granted, and we are making significant savings, to concentrate our resources as much as possible on the quality of our tutorial provision. We will continue to invest in deepening the academic provision of the College, despite the difficult external environment, and are very grateful for the substantial moral and financial help received from Old Members and other supporters of the College.

The Annual Fund 2010/11

Now in its eleventh year, the Annual Fund provides a crucial source of income that is integral to the continuing success of Univ, and we are grateful that one in three Old Members made a gift in this way in 2010/11.

The Annual Fund helps to preserve a world-leading academic environment from maintaining the fabric of the buildings to the teaching and research undertaken within them. Thank you to our supporters who made 2010/11 a record year with over £840,000 in gifts and pledges.

Nearly 70% of your donations were unrestricted, providing the College with the flexibility to apply the money to its area of greatest need. As a consequence, we were able to provide bursaries for 26.75% of our undergraduates, ensuring that Univ can continue to teach those with the very brightest minds irrespective of their financial circumstances.

Other ways in which your gifts support life at Univ include graduate scholarships to help us attract and retain the most talented graduate students in an increasingly competitive international market, and the Student Support Fund which continues to provide a safety net for undergraduates experiencing unexpected loss of financial support from parents or family.

In addition, academic support aided by the Annual Fund helps ensure that College Fellows can continue to provide teaching under the tutorial system and that cutting-edge research helps inform this teaching.

It is this circle of giving from former students to future students which we hope will continue to flourish. Univ is viewed by its peers as a leader for its culture of giving and we hope Old Members are very proud of this.

Volunteers 2010/11

We are very grateful to the following volunteers who gave their valuable time and expertise to Univ over the past year in serving on committees, providing advice, helping organise events and fundraising. The sheer breadth and depth of activities organised by the Development Office over the course of a year would be impossible without the help of these people and countless others.

Univ through a lens

As a street photographer, I enjoy catching that fleeting interaction between two people or a building in an unusual light, which most people miss as they rush past. That was my aim in spending a day at Univ and capturing views that may seem familiar yet belong only to that particular moment in time.

The thrill for me was seeing the energy and enthusiasm of the students whether at work or play in the unique environment that is Univ and always wondering if I was witnessing a discussion between a future Nobel Prize winner and Cabinet Minister.

I hope that I have captured the essence of life at Univ from the welcome at the Lodge to a student running across the quad on the way to a tutorial. The mix of modern life and ancient tradition was very inspiring.
