REPORT OF STOCKHOLM 18/05/2015 TO THE 22/05/2015

We arrived on Monday morning at nine o’clock in the St ERIK GIMNASIUM. And Sven after the

presentation of the project have divided us in four groups.

The first group worked on the cutting lampshades made into veneer. In order to go faster in the

project, three different-sized-rounded shades had already made before, so the students could focus

their job on how to cut correctly and safely these three distinctive parts used as the upper parts of

the lamp. Some big cylindrical wood items (three models) were built so as to facilitate the cutting

job: you have to slide slightly the rounded shades onto the wood item.

Then the first process was to cut the different size shades to get enough lampshades. To be sure the

students worked safely, they built a template which allowed them to get the cylindrical item steady

and stable when they cut the parts.

After this work completed, they had to cut neatly each parts ends For this, they created another

template on which you could put safely the rounded shade in order to be sure it couldn’t move while

using the band saw.

The second group worked on the lamp holder. To start, they had one model already built which

allowed them to reproduce this part of the lamp. First, they drew on each wooden plank the contour

of the model, two models per plank.

After cutting the planks into two parts, they cut each model on the circular saw, then they sanded

each of them at the sanding machine.

At the same time, some of the group were thinking about one template allowing to drill safely to get

the small hole so as to insert the light bulb and the larger one so as to insert the stick.

After this process of work, they created another template which could be used to work safely with

the hand router.

The third group focused on the lampshades holder.

The students first took plywood planks to cut on the right size and dimension the multiple holders,

for this they used the table circular saw. Then they made a template in order to work safely and cut

the angles and the nicks which allow to hold the upper part of the lamp.

After completing this whole job, they went to the finishing process: sanding with sand paper.

The fourth group worked on the foot. First, they drew the contour of the foot on a paper in order to

get the right dimension and the pattern to start. Then after building one model, they drew the

contour of this model on long wooden boards.

Each board and each foot were cut on the band saw. After the cutting of each foot, the students

made a template which was used to block safely the foot in order to work on the molding machine so

as to get the contour smooth.

At the same time, one of the students was working on the vertical drilling machine in order to drill

the hole allowing to block the stick. After all this part of the work done, they sanded each foot with

sanding paper.

While sanding each foot, another student was sanding each stick in using the turning machine: the

stick was fixed and while it was spinning, the student used sanding paper to sand correctly and

efficiently all the surface of it.

One of the teachers of this group was working on the knob. This knob has the function to hold

steadily the whole upper part of the lamp to the stick. This teacher created a template which allowed

to block the square knob safely in order to use the belt sanding machine to sand each corner so as to

get curved corners.

We also decided to put a top on the stick; for this, every student could try to work on the turning

machine to create his own personal piece. It was a good opportunity to learn how to use some

specific turning tools.

At the very end of the project, everybody assembled all the pieces together, gluing the lampshades

holders to the lamp holder.

On Thursday we visited Stockholm by boat in the morning.

In the afternoon we went to Linköpings universitet where we had a nice visit of the school.

We finished the day with a wonderful Dinner made by Astrid and Britt and all the Swedish teachers.

And the desert was a European song festival in five languages.

On Friday morning we went a last time to the school to make a quick feedback from the week and to

give each person the pieces form the product.
