This report looks at annual fall faculty counts for the Danforth Campus Schools, by gender and

by ethnicity, over the last 15 years. The following table provides a summary of the population

and trends covered in this report.

Over 15 years, the number of underrepresented minority tenured and tenure track faculty grew

by 150% (from 26 to 65) while the overall tenured and tenure track faculty total grew by 23%.

The number of women increased by 71% (from 130 to 222) while the number of men grew by

8% (from 433 to 468) over the same period.

This report begins with some summary graphs showing how the percentages of women and

URM faculty have changed over time for each school and for the Danforth Campus overall.

Detail tables for each school and for the consolidated Danforth Campus follow.

This report focuses primarily on tenured and tenure track faculty in core day school programs,

but the detail tables also include trend and diversity information for non-tenure track faculty

and for faculty in professional and continuing education programs.

The data are based on the University's annual fall faculty counts as of November 1 each year.

This collection of faculty data was established in 1993 by a working committee of the deans of

the Danforth Campus Schools to provide a consistent way of counting faculty across time.

The percentage of tenured and tenure track faculty who are women has grown over the last 15 years. Women now represent 32% of tenured and tenure track faculty on the Danforth Campus. The schools of Law and Social Work have the highest percentage of women with 47% and 58% respectively.

URM as a percentage of tenured and tenure track faculty has increased from 5% to 9% on the Danforth Campus

over the last 15 years. Social Work is highest at 22%. The numbers are small in all Danforth schools and progress

has been slow.

The number of tenured and tenure track underrepresented minority faculty has grown by 154% over the past 15

years, from 26 to 66.

The number of full-time underrepresented minority faculty overall has grown by 120% over the past 15 years, from

41 to 90.

Women now represent 30% of tenured faculty on the Danforth Campus. Law and Social Work have the highest percentage of women at 49% and 54% respectively. Engineering is the lowest at 13%.

Women are now one-third of tenured and tenure track faculty on the Danforth Campus.

The percentage of women holding the rank of full professor has increased from 14% to 26% over the last 15 years. Women now represent 40% of Assistant Professors and 38% of Associate Professors. If one assumes equal promotion rates for men and women, women's percentage of the full professor rank should continue to rise to match the assistant professor entry rate.

Continuing and Professional Education counts reflect only those faculty who do not have primary appointments in other departments at Washington

University. University College data is not available prior to the 2011-12 academic year.
