GeographyThe state of Georgia is one of the oldest in the United States of America. It is located in the southeast, and it is surrounded by Florida, North and South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and the Atlantic Ocean. With an area of 153,909 km2, its the 24th largest state in the U.S. 2.6 % of Georgias area consists of water. The total population is as big as 9,815,210 inhabitants. Since 1868, the capital of Georgia is Atlanta, which is also the largest city by far with a number of 420,003 inhabitants. Other large cities are Athens, Savannah, Augusta and Albany. Georgia has a total 159 counties and its coastline is a 100 miles long. Georgia has a really varied landscape. In the north and northeast, there are mountains, while in the south the land is completely flat. The climate is also varied, depending on the area where you are. In most of Georgia, there is a humid sub-tropical climate. This means that the winters are mild and the summers are warm and humid. The northern areas are a little bit cooler. The highest temperature ever recorded was 44 degrees Celsius in 1952, and the lowest temperature was -27 degrees Celsius. Two of the biggest mountain ranges in Georgia are the Appalachian Mountains located in the northwest of Georgia, and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northeast. The mountain ranges meet each other in the northeast, where they come together to form Mount Mitchell. With a height of 2,037 meters, it is the highest point of both mountain ranges. Other big mountain ranges are Cohutta Mountains and North Georgia Mountains. The state can be divided into six regions: the Appalachian Plateau, the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region, the Blue Ridge, the Piedmont, the Atlantic Coastal plain and the East Gulf Coastal Plain. All these regions continue into the surrounding states.Atlantic Coastal Plain The Atlantic Coastal Plain lies in the southeast of Georgia and goes along the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. It also covers parts of North and South Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida. It occupies a quarter of Georgia and has a flat landscape. The three largest urban areas are Brunswick, Hinesville-Fort Stewart and Savannah. Three of the longest rivers are the Ogeechee River with a length of 473 km, the Savannah River with a length of 484 km and the Suwannee River with a length of 396 km.East Gulf Coastal Plain

A pine forest that isnt chopped yetThe East Gulf Coastal Plain lies in the southwest of Georgia and is quite similar to the Atlantic Coastal Plain. They both cover almost a quarter of Georgia and they have a similar flat landscape, but the soil of the East Gulf Coastal Plain is less sandy. A part of the Okefenokee Swamp lies in the East Gulf Coastal Plain, and the Suwannee River flows through both areas. The East Gulf Coastal plain runs from Louisiana to parts of Tennessee and Kentucky, and from Alabama to western Florida. There are many pine forests, but most of these forests are being threatened by woodcutters.PiedmontThe Piedmont is located in the middle of Georgia, above the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the East Gulf Coastal Plain. It has a hilly landscape with narrow valleys in the north, where it borders the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region. The northern part of Piedmont is approximately 457 meters above sea level, while the southern part is only 122 meters above sea level. There is also a big difference in height where the southern edge of Piedmont meets the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Eastern Gulf Coastal Plain. This edge is called the Fall Line. Rivers that flow through Piedmont fall down to the lower regions forming beautiful waterfalls. There used to be many oak forests, but many have disappeared due to woodcutters and pests. Dogwood Anthracnose, Beech Bark Disease, Gypsy Moth and Sudden Oak Death are only a few of the pests that have caused the natural areas to decrease and many species to die.Blue Ridge

Brasstown BaldBlue Ridge is located in the northeast of Georgia, above Piedmont. There are many big mountains, most of them higher than 1 km. This is also where one of the highest point of Georgia is located, Brasstown Bald, with a height of 1,458 meters. The mountains are covered in hardwoods and pine softwoods. More than 700 varieties of trees and plants have been recorded here. Rivers have cut out deep valleys through the mountains, and are now used to provide hydroelectric power to Georgia. The Annual Blue Ridge Adventure Race is also held in these mountains. Its a popular race throughout the southeast of America and each year there are many teams participating. The region was called Blue Ridge because of the fact that they look blue at sunset.

Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region

The Cumberland MountainsWest of the Blue Ridge is the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region. As you can already deduce from the name, there are many ridges and valleys. The ridges are long, and the valleys are large and fertile. They are used to grow apples, and poultry is also a famous product from this region. The Alleghenies and the Cumberlands are two of the biggest mountain ranges. The Allegheny Mountains are 1,482 meters high and the Cumberland Mountains are 1,263 meters high. There are only a few rivers. The Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region is colder than the other regions, with mild summers and quite cold winters. The population is about 360,000 inhabitants.Appalachian PlateauThe Appalachian Plateau is located in the northwest and the smallest of all regions in Georgia. It rises about 600 meters above sea level and consists of narrow valleys and wooded ridges. Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain are high mountains found in this region. The climate of the Appalachian Plateau is similar to the climate of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region, but theres less precipitation in the Appalachian Plateau. The approximate population is 90,670 people. The natural resources are fresh water, timber and coal.

HistoryThe Creek and the Cherokee were two Indian tribes that had lived in Georgia for a long period of time. In 1540, the Spanish discovered Georgia and claimed it to be theirs, but the British also wanted to have Georgia. A fight between Spain and Britain started and continued for almost over a century.

A picture of James Edward OglethorpeNot much happened until the 18th century. Georgia was the last of the 13 British colonies that were established on the Atlantic Seaboard. It was founded by James Edward Oglethorpe on 12 February 1733, on the place where now the city of Savannah is. Together with 114 others, he settled there. More people started to settle down in the colony of Georgia and the colony got bigger and bigger. The Spanish, who had colonized the area of present-day Florida, didnt like the fact that there were so many British people, and there were only coming more. They started a battle against the British, but they were defeated on July 7 1742. The British were still in control of Georgia. In the following years, Georgia had much wealth. However, the people living in Georgia, and the inhabitants of the twelve other British colonies too, were fed up with the way they were treated by the British. They didnt like the plans of the British government and thought the taxes were too high. The 13 colonies started a war against the British Empire in 1775. Led by George Washington and other generals, they defeated the British in 1783 and all colonies became independent. Georgia already became independent before 1783. In January 1776, the British declared Georgias independence. An Executive Council was elected, and the city of Savannah was made the capital of Georgia. The Legislature met there for very important meetings. Two years later, they moved to Augusta, and the Legislature kept moving between the two cities. On February 22 1785, Augusta officially became the capital city of Georgia. 11 years later, Louisville became the capital city.

The Burning of the Yazoo Act In 1795, a big political scandal took place, now known as the Yazoo Land Fraud. Many state leaders wanted to use a part of Georgias western land for settlement, but there was one slight problem. The Creeks, Cherokees and other Native Americans were living in that area. Four big land companies bribed Georgias legislators to sell their rights to the land and pass a law, the Yazoo Act, which made it possible for them to buy 35 million acres of land for less than two cents per acre. These companies then sold the land to others for normal prices, making huge profits. Most Georgians were furious when they found out and many of the bribed legislators had fled. The next year, a new legislature was elected and the Yazoo Act was burned. As Georgia continued to grow, people were searching for a new capital city. In 1804, Milledgeville was chosen the new capital and it stayed that way for 61 years. In 1829, gold was discovered in the Georgian mountains, and a gold rush followed. It was the second gold rush in the United States. Meanwhile, the Cherokees were still living in the western part of Georgia. They had their own government with their own constitution, and didnt recognize the authority of the state. In 1830, the Indian Removal Act was passed, which said that Indian tribes had to move to Indian reservations in present-day Oklahoma. The Cherokee tribe refused to, but eventually they were forced to move with a lot of violence and 4,000 Cherokees died. The relocation is now known as the Trail of Tears.Cotton became one of the main products produced in Georgia. Many slaves had to work on large cotton plantations and in 1860, slaves made up 44 % of the total population. On January 18 1861, Georgia seceded from the United States and joined the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy then consisted of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas. Later, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina joined. In all these states, slavery was legal. The United States didnt agree with the fact that the states could just leave and make their own government. The American Civil War began, and it lasted until 1865. Many deadly battles were fought, and in the end, the United States had regained control of the Confederacy. Slavery was abolished on December 6 1865, and there were over 460,000 freedmen. Georgia was devastated. Savannah was in ruins, and the big city of Atlanta was burned down. Georgias economy had worsened much, as its main export product was cotton, at a time when world market prices were at one of the lowest levels in history. A period of reconstruction began. Atlanta was made the new capital city of Georgia. All states that were part of the Confederate States were placed under military control. Their constitutions were revised and all former slaves now had the right to vote and to hold seats in the Legislature, but there were many conflicts between them. The recovery process was slow, but by the start of the 20th century, Georgias industry was growing again. During the First World War, Georgias economy was flourishing. But in 1929, Americas stock market crashed and Georgia fell into the Great Depression, together with many other states and foreign countries. After the Second World War, things were getting better in Georgia again. Cities grew bigger and many factories were built. In the 1950s, many southern states were still highly racist. For example, the school systems were still segregated, so black and white people had to go to different schools. Even though the U.S. Supreme Court had legally ended segregation in 1954, there was only put an end to it in Georgia in 1970. In January 1977, Jimmy Carter, who lived in Georgia, was elected President of the United States. The next two decades were great years for Georgia. Atlanta has become an international city, and many people want to trade and invest money in the state.

Main IndustryGeorgia used to be a state, which almost completely depended on the production of agricultural products. But after the Civil War, many other industries started to develop. Nowadays, tourism and textiles are also a big source of income. In the next chapter, I will tell you more about tourism in Georgia. In this chapter, we will take a closer look at Georgias agriculture, mineral and timber industry, and manufacturing.Fortune 1000 is a list made by Fortune magazine, which ranks the top 1000 biggest companies from the United States. Thirty-two companies from this list have built their headquarters in Georgia, including Coca-Cola and Delta Air Lines.AgricultureAgriculture is the largest and oldest industry of Georgia. Annually, it contributes to more than 8% of Georgias economy, and one in every six Georgians works in agriculture. There are approximately 480,000 farms in Georgia, and they take up 10 million acres of land. Because of its favorable climate, many different crops can be cultivated. But not only crops are grown. Many cattle are raised too.

This is Georgias state quarter. The outline of the state is shown, with a peach in the middle. The state tree, the Live Oak, is shown on the sides and the states motto, wisdom, justice, moderation, is written on a banner.Georgia is the number one producer of pecan nuts in the world. It is the number one producer of watermelons, chickens and peanuts in the United States. They are also near the top when it comes to cotton, peaches, eggs and onions. Big farms produce much corn and soybeans, and tobacco is one of the principle crops that are grown. Gainesville, a city in the northeast of Georgia, is called the Poultry Capital of the World. Georgia is nicknamed the Peach State, because of the importance of peaches in the agriculture. Even on the back of Georgias state quarter, there is a peach. Another nickname for Georgia is the Goober State. Goobers are peanuts, and it got its nickname because of the high amount of peanuts produced. Mineral and Timber industryGeorgia has many big pine forests, and it is the leading producer of lumber and pulpwood in the United States. It has more acres of pine forests used for industry than any other state, with a total of 23,8 million acres. Georgia is also rich in minerals. It has fine marble and much iron ore, and Georgia exports many different stones, clays, sands. Still, mining is not as important as manufacturing and agriculture.

ManufacturingGeorgia also does a lot of manufacturing. Paper products, aircraft, chemical products, cars, cigarettes and electric equipment are just few of the many things that Georgia produces. Manufacturing is important for Georgias economy, and approximately 10,000 factories are found in Georgia. One in every 10 Georgians works in manufacturing. The Georgia Department of Economic Development has organized the Manufacturing Appreciation Week, together with the Technical College system. It will be celebrated from 16 to 20 April. There will be a competition for the most productive manufacturers of Georgia, and on 19 April, the prize for the annual Manufacturer of the Year will be awarded. The main goal of this week is to make people aware of the importance of manufacturing in Georgia. One of the most famous products of Georgia is Coca-Cola. John Pemberton, who was a pharmacist in Georgia, invented it. Nowadays, it is a big success everywhere in the world, but the headquarters are still located in Georgia.

Here you see the headquarters of Coca-Cola at night. A video montage is projected on the building, to celebrate its 125-year anniversary and to thank all their fans.Textile production is also a big source of income. Thirty percent of all industrial workers work in the textile industry. Together with California and North Carolina, Georgia accounts for about forty-five percent of all industrial workers in the United State. Georgia also produces many carpets, and the city of Dalton is called the Carpet Capital of the World.

TourismAs I have already mentioned in the last chapter, tourism is a big source of income. Georgia has much nature, appealing beaches and many historic towns. The Georgians are known for being warm and welcome, and the beautiful environment makes Georgia a popular holiday destiny. More than 234,100 people work in the tourism industry, and there are many interesting tourist attractions. Of course, I cannot describe all of them, so I have made a selection of the most visited tourist attractions in Georgia.Stone Mountain Park Stone Mountain Park is the most visited tourist attraction of Georgia, with almost 4 million guests every year. It is a beautiful theme park located in Atlanta, and it is as large as 3,200 acres. You can go hiking in the nature, go to the laser show, watch the 4D movie about the Earth or go through Sky Hike, the largest adventure course of the United States.Georgia Aquarium

A Whale Shark in the aquarium. The Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the world. With more than 100,000 animals from 500 different species, it contains more sea creatures than any other aquarium. It owns four Whale Sharks, each longer than 10 meters, and four Beluga Whales. It holds over eight million gallons of water, which is equal to 30,6 million liters of water. The Georgia Aquarium is also located in Atlanta.

Savannah Saint Patricks DayThis is not an attraction, but an annual event. On March 17, St. Patricks Day will be celebrated in Savannah, for the 187th time. It is the largest St. Patricks Day party in the South, with bands, marching groups and a big parade. Last year, more than 500,000 people visited the celebration. Tallulah Gorge State ParkTallulah Gorge is one of the most spectacular canyons in eastern United States. It is three kilometers long and has cliffs up to 300 meters high. There are six falls, known as the Tallulah falls, and the highest of these six drops 29 meters. Just above the falls is a big lake, the Tallulah Falls Lake. A hydroelectric dam was built there, and it now powers Atlantas trams. The Gorge belongs to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. You can go hiking, kayaking and rafting. Radium SpringsRadium Springs is the largest natural spring in the state, and also belongs to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. The waters flow at a speed of 265,000 liters per minute, and they end up into the Flint River. It also has many caves underwater. The spring is called Radium Springs, because there is much radium in the water. Before people discovered the high amount of radium in the water, it was called Blue Springs, because the water had a beautiful blue colour. A casino, a spa and a resort are built close to the springs, and many people go swimming in the springs.Providence Canyon State Park The Providence Canyon is 4.06 km2 big, and is located in the southwest of Georgia. It also belongs to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia and it is called Georgias Little Grand Canyon. During the 18th century, many farmers used to live there. However, because of poor farming, the land eroded away. That is what has caused the huge gullies, some even 150 feet deep.Callaway GardensCallaway Gardens is a large holiday resort, 52.6 km2 big. It is located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain, and has huge gardens. There is much to do. You can go canoeing, cycling, play golf and go to an adventure park. The resort is really luxurious, and has even won awards.Okefenokee SwampThe Okefenokee Swamp is a shallow swamp filled with peat, 1770 km large. The name comes from an extinct Indian language, meaning Land of the Trembling Earth. It is located in the southern part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and it is considered as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. It is the largest peat-based swamp in North America, and also one of the largest in the world. The swamp is home to alligators and many other animals. There are motorboat and railroad tours through the swamp, or you can go canoeing through the swamp yourself.Amicalola FallsThe Amicalola Falls is the highest waterfall of the Southeast, with a height of 222 meters. It belongs to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia. The name Amicalola comes from a native Indian language, Cherokee, meaning tumbling waters. The Amicalola Falls is a popular place for hiking.

D: http://www.cbsatlanta.com/Assignment 1Information about the ten Republicans who would like to become the Republican nominee and run against Mr. Obama.Michele Bachmann She wants to restore the economy and create more jobs. One of the ways in which she is going to do this is by repealing Obama Care, because Michele sees it as a hindrance for creating jobs. She wants to cut back in spending, government and taxes. By doing so, she hopes to reduce Americas debt. When Michele becomes a president, she will make sure that there will be more energy production in America and that more green energy will be produced. She wants a more secure nation. She wants to increase military strength and enforce American immigration laws. She will reduce the role of the government. How she criticizes others:She hardly criticizes any of the other Republican candidates. The only one who she criticizes a lot is President Obama. She says that Obama has failed America and will be a one-term president. She tells everyone what hes done wrong, and what he didnt do.Herman Cain He wants to improve military training and equipment, as the army protects America and its citizens. He also wants to improve the infrastructure in America. He wants to reduce taxes and even permanently eliminate the death tax. He also wants to lower other taxes, because he thinks the government taxes too much and too often. He also wants less legislation, less regulation and more business-friendly policies, to support economic growth. When he becomes a president, he will expand the domestic energy resources and also support the alternative energy sources such as wind, solar and nuclear energy. He will remove Obama Care and replace it with others health care reforms, so that health care will become cheaper and more doctors can practice medicine. He will support free trade and he wants to open more markets and create a customer base for American businesses. He wants absolutely no limitations to foreign trade.

Rick Perry He will lower the taxes, repeal many regulations and balance the budget. He wants to create millions of jobs so that the unemployment rate will go down. When Rick becomes a president, he will increase the force of the military. And he will make sure that the army is only going to fight when it is really necessary. He wants to repeal Obama Care and make big reformations in the health care. He wants to expand the energy production in the United States, so they will have to import less energy, which will save money.Newt Gingrich He wants to reduce unemployment. Therefore, he wants to increase the national security of America. He will maximize energy production and he will encourage the innovation of green energy. Newt thinks that Obama Care has created many new taxes, regulations and bureaucracies that only made the problems in America worse. He will start a new health care reformation that will save lives and money. He wants to improve education and he wants to give extra attention to the subjects math and science. He also wants to put a tax on home schooling.Mitt Romney He wants to rebuild the economy of America with the help of free enterprise, hard work and innovation. He wants to reduce taxes, spending, regulation and government programs. Things he wants to increase are trade, energy production and labor flexibility. When he becomes a president, he will cut federal spending and try to balance the budget of America. He will give the states and the people more power. Another goal of Mitt Romney is to repeal Obama Care and replace it with other health care reformations that will reduce health care costs.Buddy Roemer He wants to create more jobs, by increasing the production of goods. He will encourage businesses to buy more American goods, instead of foreign products. He also wants more fair trade. He thinks that the taxes are too high so he wants to reduce taxes, and even remove some of them. When he becomes a president, he will make sure that more of the production of military equipment will be done in America. He wants to reform health care so that it is affordable and provides the quality of care that people need. Buddy Roemer wants to fix immigration, by sealing the borders of America and ensure that the immigrants who enter the country do it legally. He wants to make education reforms, so that children get world-class education.

Gary Johnson He wants to end excessive spending, stimulus programs and unnecessary farm subsidies. He wants to repeal Obama Care and block Medicare and Medicaid funds, so that states can set up funds themselves that provide better service at a lower cost. Gary Johnson thinks that its hard for legal immigrants to find a job, so he wants to provide more jobs for them. He will make sure that the forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries leave. Gary Johnson is against the torturing of criminals and terrorists, because he is afraid that other countries might follow if America will torture their prisoners. So for instance, women can make their own decisions about abortion. He thinks the government should accept everyones religion.Ron Paul He wants to repeal Obama Care and invest more money in medical care.
