LEARNOnline support for learners of all ages was enhanced with the launch of Brainfuse. Providing live, online homework help Monday through Friday and skills building, writing assistance, GED and citizenship help 24 hours a day, every day of the year, Brainfuse is accessible from any of the library’s computers or remotely through the library’s website. Library cardholders completed more than 1,000 tutoring sessions, with the most popular subjects being biology, chemistry and sixth-grade math. Brainfuse also provides help for students preparing for standardized tests including SATs and ACTs. Writing assistance includes reviewing papers, outline organization and general theme development. Brainfuse also features a language lab and an adult learning center that offers career-enhancing skills to jobseekers. Help is available in Spanish, too. This service was funded by a grant from Princeton University.

At Princeton Public Library, we celebrate words and ideas every day, and continue to look for ways to turn those words into actions, through library programs and services that

meet the ever-changing needs of our community. While signature events like the Princeton Environmental Film Festival and Friends of the Library Book Sale remain popular, we also ventured down some new paths in 2011. We pride ourselves on our ability to innovate, adapt, and transform its services in a way that continually engage the community. The statistics tell us that we are reaching new audiences by providing more digital content, expanding our Museum Pass offerings, refreshing our collections and space, assisting job seekers, and renewing our commitment to providing a wide array of programs for adults, teens and children.

This report highlights the expanded programs and services of 2011.

GROWAs a result of the successful funding of the Princeton Public Library Endowment for the Humanities, the library is developing exciting and challenging humanities-based programs and collections for everyone in the com-munity. In 2011, this special funding allowed us to pres-ent author Nicole Krauss as part of Princeton Reads, host a program for high school students featuring actors from “Gatz,” the groundbreaking word-for-word dramatization of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” offer a series of staged readings in the Page to Stage series and pres-ent a music composition master class with Judah Adashi, whose “Songs and Dances of Macondo” was performed by the Quintet of the Americas. Additionally, this funding allowed us to expand our collection, with an emphasis on our e-book collection, and supported the refurbishment of the AV equipment in the Community Room. To plan future programs, the library formed the PPL Humanities Council, under the direction of Executive Director Leslie Burger and humanities scholar Stanley Katz of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University.

CREATEIn keeping with the library’s focus on expanding access to technology, fundraising efforts continued in the fall of 2011 and resulted in the purchase of nine new iMac computers in the Technology Center and a new MacBook Pro Cart with 10 MacBook Pro laptop com-puters to support our afterschool homework help efforts. Fundraising efforts during the Friends of the Princeton Public Library Benefit in October, contributions from private donors and our endowment allowed the library to move forward with the Mac Lab for our customers. Volunteers from Princeton Macintosh Users Group signed on to provide expert guidance and a variety of technology classes for users of all skill levels. Regular after-school and weekend hours were set aside for MacTime for Teens to give high school students exclusive access to the Tech-nology Center providing a collaborative setting for them to experiment with new computer software and explore their creativity. The iMacs and MacBook Pros added to the 100 multimedia computers distributed throughout the building that are available for public use.

ENGAGEThroughout 2011, arts and cultural institutions at Princeton University and the Princeton community collaborated on Memory and the Work of Art, a year of exhibitions, concerts, performances and lectures to mark the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2011. As a tie-in to this project that explored how the arts shape our collective memory and inform our experience of global events, the library selected “The History of Love” by Nicole Krauss for 2011’s Princeton Reads. A community-wide reading program that encourages everyone to read and discuss a selected book, Princeton Reads included an appearance by Krauss at Princeton University and a series of book discussions and presentations at the library.

CONNECTNever was the library’s designation as the “community’s living room” more on target than in the aftermath of Hurricane

Irene in August of 2011. Princeton residents, reeling from power outages, blocked roads, fallen trees and flooding,

turned to the library in droves. The day after the storm, dubbed Plug In and Power Up Day, saw more than 4,500 people, twice the usual number for an average day, pass through the library’s doors. The library extended its operating hours to 11 p.m. allowing grateful customers to recharge electronic devices and reconnect with the Internet and each other.

PLAYAs it has every year, the Princeton Children’s Book Festival continued to grow in 2011. More than 60 acclaimed authors and illustrators participated in the sixth annual festival, many reading from their works and giving demonstrations. In

2011, the library collaborated with author and illustrator Sophie Blackall to create the first festival poster and partnered with jaZams of Princeton to sell books at the festival. JaZams stocked the tables with titles by participating authors/illustrators who happily signed books for children. JaZams donated 20 percent of the proceeds from the day to the library’s Youth Services department.
