future product development.

RATIONALE

In the current business areas, innovation remains central to business development and

sustainable growth. However, entrepreneurs lack skills necessary to scan the environment for

new business opportunities, or to approach the market and spot gaps that could be filled. We

are very optimistic that by teaching entrepreneurs on how to conduct market research, we are

opening their eyes and ears for new business opportunities that have remained untapped and

problems that are yet to be solved.

Monday, 30th

November and ended on Friday, 4th

WORKSHOP CONTENT

On the first day of the workshop started later at 9:30 AM instead of 8:00AM because of

rain, the participants was introducing them self for to know each other, after that we had an

expectations and to hear its business problems from them.

The second day of the workshop was a real kick off where participants started getting into

the learning mood. They were introduced to business innovation course where they learnt

what innovation is, why it is an important recipe in all businesses for their growth and

survival. On the same day, the Vice chancellor of UTB (KABERA Callixte) to officially

open the workshop. In his opening remarks, he thanked the participants for sacrificing their

precious time and attending the workshop and he reminded them that REC is there to support

their entrepreneurial initiatives to the best of its abilities. He ensured participants that they

stand to gain a lot from this kind of workshops. The UTB director of Finance and

Administration was also present and gave a short word where he mentioned that UTB is there

to support the entrepreneurs as an equal partner in Rwanda „entrepreneurial development.

On the third day, the lesson on business innovation was continued, but with practical

examples. Participants were asked to relate business innovation theory to their own

businesses and see areas where they could innovate or improve for better performance.

The lesson was followed by a group brainstorming session where participants, with the

guidance of facilitators gave each other ideas on how they could improve their businesses.

On day four, after learning how to bring innovations in one‟s business, participants were

taught how to sell their innovative products and services, focusing on the problem they solve.

During this lesson, entrepreneurs were reminded that their main purpose is to solve problems

and not to sell products. While negotiating with customers, they should stress on the benefits

of the product rather than its features in order to attract less enthusiastic customers.

On the last day, participants were given a wrap-up lesson focused on the general business

management. During this lesson, participants were reminded that sound financial planning

and daily bookkeeping are keys to financial success of the business. Additionally, they were

advised not to co-mingle their personal obligations with their business obligations, a practice

that would hinder good financial management.

Lessons learnt, resolutions and suggestions from participants

From the brainstorming session, participants came to realise the importance of group

discussions and business ideation. They resolved to organise in an association (IKIMINA)

and KAKAWETE, support each other both financially and professionally.
