Why was the system designed?

• to address problems in Phil-IRI data processing, reporting and

transmission/submission;

• to enable decision-makers at the school, division, region and

national levels make full use of Phil-IRI data;

• to support national implementation of Phil-IRI

What are the components of the system?

An automated Phil-IRI Scores Encoding Template and

Validation Program for use at the school level that could:

• be easily reproduced and disseminated to the schools;

• be ran (executed) on basic hardware and software and

requires basic IT competencies of the users;

• eliminate possible encoding and computational errors

including mismatches in pre-test and post-test results;

• readily transform encoded results to usable summaries;

• facilitate convenient and speedy transmission of school-

level reports to the division level.

What are the components of the system?

Data Management Programs for use at the division and

central levels that could:

• be easily reproduced and disseminated to the divisions;

• be ran (executed) on basic hardware and software and

requires basic IT competencies of the users;

• eliminate possible encoding and computational errors

by integrating functions for easy and accurate merging

and integration of school-based data;

• automatically generate readily usable (viewable and

printable) pre-programmed summaries of data;

• facilitate convenient and speedy transmission of

division-level reports to the national level data

repository.

national Phil-IRI data.

files.

EXERCISE

Do the following:

• On your PC‟s desktop, create a folder and name it

„Phil-IRI Database Training (your name).

• Open the CD-ROM given by the facilitators and copy

the contents to the folder you have just created on

your PC‟s desktop.

• Eject the CD and keep it for future use. You should

not be needing it again for this workshop.

• a laptop computer,

• your own copy of the “Manual and User‟s Guide”,

• the Phil-IRI Scores Encoding Template and the Validation Program,

• Phil-IRI school data.

You are expected to:

• observe rules of courtesy,

• read, familiarize selves and be guided by the manual,

• direct queries and relevant concerns to the facilitator assigned

to you,

• consult the facilitator assigned to you only after reading the

manual,

• complete the exercises.

• Accomplish the School Profile Sheet with your school data. (pp. 2-4 of the Manual)

• Accomplish the Grade 1 Scores Encoding Sheet. Encode at least

25 pupil records.

• Save your work in the „Phil-IRI database training ____‟ folder on

your desktop. Close the file. (p. 6 of the Manual)

• Locate the School Validation Program Setup file from among the

files you copied into your working folder.

• Install the School Validation Program.

• Validate and lock the accomplished Grade 1 Sheet.

If actual Phil-IRI data is used, it is recommended that a copy of the file be

made and saved before validation.

• Accomplish the rest of the Scores Encoding Sheets (Grades 2 to

6) with at least 20 pupil records each.

• Validate and lock the Scores Encoding Sheet and package the

school Phil-IRI data for submission to the division.

made and saved before validation.

• Save the templates in your working folder. These will be used as

inputs during the next workshop.

pre-test data.

- What teaching strategies are commonly employed in the schools’

reading intervention programs?

- Of the reading intervention programs implemented in the schools in

the division, which ones are the most effective? Why?

- If you were to implement a program to improve reading performance,
