INTRODUCTION Overview of the System

Why was the system designed?

• to address problems in Phil-IRI data processing, reporting and

transmission/submission;

• to enable decision-makers at the school, division, region and

national levels make full use of Phil-IRI data;

• to support national implementation of Phil-IRI

What are the components of the system?

An automated Phil-IRI Scores Encoding Template and

Validation Program for use at the school level that could:

• be easily reproduced and disseminated to the schools;

• be ran (executed) on basic hardware and software and

requires basic IT competencies of the users;

• eliminate possible encoding and computational errors

including mismatches in pre-test and post-test results;

• readily transform encoded results to usable summaries;

• facilitate convenient and speedy transmission of school-

level reports to the division level.


Data Management Programs for use at the division and

central levels that could:

• be easily reproduced and disseminated to the divisions;

• be ran (executed) on basic hardware and software and

requires basic IT competencies of the users;

• eliminate possible encoding and computational errors

by integrating functions for easy and accurate merging

and integration of school-based data;

• automatically generate readily usable (viewable and

printable) pre-programmed summaries of data;

• facilitate convenient and speedy transmission of

division-level reports to the national level data

repository.


A Web-Based Data Repository that could:

• be accessed whenever, wherever internet connection

is available;

• support Phil-IRI implementation by making available

background information, memorandums, guidelines

and other important information related to Phil-IRI;

• be accessed to view updated division, regional and

national Phil-IRI data.

PREPARATORY

WORKSHOP

Pre-Workshop Check

All participants….

• have their own laptop PC;

• have Phil-IRI data;

• know their School ID;

• are familiar with (ECARP) reading

intervention program(s) implemented in

their own schools

Pre-Workshop Check

All participants are ICT literate.

• familiar with the parts of a computer;

• can distinguish between „program‟ and

„data‟, „program file‟ and „data file‟

• can navigate within the computer;

• familiar with basic programs like word

processor and spreadsheets;

• know how to „Open‟, „Save‟ and „Copy‟

files.

EXERCISE

Do the following:

• On your PC‟s desktop, create a folder and name it

„Phil-IRI Database Training (your name).

• Open the CD-ROM given by the facilitators and copy

the contents to the folder you have just created on

your PC‟s desktop.

• Eject the CD and keep it for future use. You should

not be needing it again for this workshop.

EXERCISE

Do the following:

• Open MS Word and Create a “New” document.

• Write your Name, Designation, School and Division.

• Write your expectations for this training workshop.

• Save (as) the file giving it the filename: Workshop

Output (your name).

• Save it in the folder you‟ve just created. This may be

collected later on.



WORKSHOP 1 Using the Scores Encoding Template

and School Data Validation Program

Work-

shop 1.

Using the Phil-IRI Scores Encoding Template & School Validation Program

For this workshop, you’ll need:

• a laptop computer,

• your own copy of the “Manual and User‟s Guide”,

• the Phil-IRI Scores Encoding Template and the Validation Program,

• Phil-IRI school data.

You are expected to:

• observe rules of courtesy,

• read, familiarize selves and be guided by the manual,

• direct queries and relevant concerns to the facilitator assigned

to you,

• consult the facilitator assigned to you only after reading the

manual,

• complete the exercises.

shop 1.


Exercise. Part 1.

• Open the Phil-IRI Scores Encoding Template.

• Accomplish the School Profile Sheet with your school data. (pp. 2-4 of the Manual)

• Accomplish the Grade 1 Scores Encoding Sheet. Encode at least

25 pupil records.

(pp. 4-6 of the Manual)

• Save your work in the „Phil-IRI database training ____‟ folder on

your desktop. Close the file. (p. 6 of the Manual)

Exercise. Part 2.

• Locate the School Validation Program Setup file from among the

files you copied into your working folder.

• Install the School Validation Program.

• Validate and lock the accomplished Grade 1 Sheet.

If actual Phil-IRI data is used, it is recommended that a copy of the file be

made and saved before validation.

• Accomplish the rest of the Scores Encoding Sheets (Grades 2 to

6) with at least 20 pupil records each.

• Validate and lock the Scores Encoding Sheet and package the

school Phil-IRI data for submission to the division.

Exercise. Part 2.1

• Locate the School Validation Program Setup file from among the

files you copied into your working folder.

• Install the School Validation Program.

• Validate and lock the Scores Encoding Sheet and package the

school Phil-IRI data for submission to the division. Do this for all

three (3) school data. You will be using the packaged data for the

next workshop.

Assignment:

• For each division, prepare 3 sets of Phil-IRI school data. (one

template for each school). Encode at least 20 pupil records per

grade.

• Validate, lock and package all accomplished templates. If actual Phil-IRI data is used, it is recommended that a copy of the file be

made and saved before validation.

• Save the templates in your working folder. These will be used as

inputs during the next workshop.

Assignment:

• Explore the summary sheets of the accomplished templates and

answer the following questions: - How would you describe the reading performance of the pupils in your

school?

- Are there differences between the boys’ and the girls’ reading

performance?

- Are there differences between the pupils’ performance in English and

their performance in Filipino?

- If you are to implement a program to improve reading performance,

which group(s) of pupils will you target? Which language will you focus

on?

• Write and save your answers on your own „Workshop Outputs‟

document (after „expectations).



WORKSHOP 2 Using the Phil-IRI Division Data

Management Program

Using the Phil-IRI Division Data Management Program

1. Locate and install the Division Data Management Program in

your computer;

2. Adjust the settings for your own division and current school

year.

3. Familiarize selves with the functions and features of the

program;

4. Load the previously prepared (3) school templates into the

division database;

1. Prepare the post-test data of your school samples.

2. Lock, validate and package the post-test data for submission

to the division.

1. Explore the functions of your database.

2. Answer the following questions: - How many (and what percentage of) schools have submitted Phil-IRI

pre-test data.

- How would you describe the reading performance of the schools in

the division?

- In which aspects are the schools weakest?

- In which aspects are they strongest?

- What teaching strategies are commonly employed in the schools’

reading intervention programs?

- Of the reading intervention programs implemented in the schools in

the division, which ones are the most effective? Why?

- If you were to implement a program to improve reading performance,

What will it be? What will it address?

3. Write and save your answers on your own „Workshop

Outputs‟ document (after „expectations).
