REPRESENTATIONS WITHIN TV DRAMA

CLASSGOSSIP GIRL

• Gossip Girl is a good example to show different type of classes. The people who are living in the upper class are always wearing dresses and posh clothes especially from famous designers like Dior, Gucci, Prada etc. They are the upper class of the society and all the girls who are not in the upper class are trying to be member of their groups. A good example is that the rich people are living on the upper east side where as the normal people are living in Brooklyn.

SEXUALITY GOSSIP GIRL

• In gossip girl is one character which is homosexual. He isn’t shown in a stereotypical way because he still seams to be like a boy. There is one aspect which is stereotypical. The aspect is that he has more friends which are girls and that he is always there for them as he always wants to help and listen to their problems. His behaviour is not like a girl as he still speaks like a boy, he doesn’t like shopping and all that stuff girls like.

AGE

• In Gossip Girl one of the oldest characters is Cece she is the mother of Lilly and the grandma of Eric and Serena. Cece is not shown in a stereotypical way because normally old people are shown as weak and vulnerable. In this TV drama it is different because the character is represented as a strong women who know what she wants and always gets what she wants.

• On the other hand there are very young people as well. Teenagers are the main age group in gossip girl. The Boys are not shown stereotypical as they are not committing crime. The only bad thing they are doing is that some of them are taking drugs. The girls are shown as stereotypical as they like shopping and hanging out with their friends.

ETHNICITY

• The ethnicity in Gossip girl isn’t represented stereotypical as there is a patchwork family. The Mother in this patchwork family was married 5 times. Her 5th husband has two children which are friends with Lilly’s (mother) two children. It is also not stereotypical that Serena the child of Lilly is in love with Dan the son of Rufus (Lilly’s husband). The family is famous and therefore they are always trying to represent the family which has no problems even if they are the opposite.

• There is also another family called the Waldorf’s. At the beginning of the series it was just Blair and her mum Eleanor. So this isn’t stereotypical as well.

This examples shows that the ethnicity in gossip girl is not very stereotypical even if they are trying to

be.

GENDERGOSSIP GIRL

• Chuck is a stereotypical young men how is just after girls. He is know as a womanizer because every girl likes him and he has every night a different one. This represent young men stereotypically because normally they just want to try how many girls they can get. Another stereotypical aspect is that he loves Blair but they can’t be together so he tries to distract himself by dating other girls and taking drugs. This represents that Chuck can’t deal with his feeling to Blair so he is doing bad things.
