The Balkan mountains act as natural barrier as most of the rabies cases during the past years have been detected in North Bulgaria. Only few cases in foxes have been detected south of the mountains in the west part of the country since 2008.

III. Monitoring and evaluation
Main reasons :
to improve implementation

assuming methods are standardized
to check the programme progress against targets and allows for regular adjustments

dog welfare,
responsible animal ownership,
prevalence of zoonotic diseases
