History Nieuwkoop started in 1970 to used hydroculture using gravel. Hans Nieuwkoop was the

first Dutch man who applied hydroculture in whole Europe. By using this technology, tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers, and chrysanthemum had become abundant in his production. Hydroculture is growing plants in soil less culture, this is achieved supporting the plant roots in pure expanded clay pellets together with especially formulated fertilizer and controlled watering system. As he started with 500 m2 , the greenhouse expanded but there was limitation because there was no enough land for it and the auction market was too far for transportation. His son, Henk Nieuwkoop decided to have his own business started with small packinghouse and the products sold directly to the customer. Time goes on, his client demanded new plants. By this demand of his client, his company where he started a sales office in the wholesale centre for florists, named Cultura at the Aalsmeer Flower Auction (now called FloraHolland Aalsmeer) in 1983, he applied the cash-and-carry principles. Later, Henk Nieuwkoop started another company located near the auction of FloraHolland Naaldwijk at Pyramide, a similar type of trade centre to Cultura in Aaslmeer. In 1990, Henk Nieuwkoop hired a small 3,000m2 business in De Kwakel for temporary storage and sales of soil plants.

Later, Henk Nieuwkoop decided to built his company in efficient for them which composed of greenhouses, shipping area and warehouse, offices for administration and sales department, which had a hyper modernized, high technologies and well-equipped company were

operated, including the Digital Order Picking and other gadget which are connected to WiFi and Nieuwkoop-Europe B.V. was only the leading company that used this gadget. The company is composed of 60, 000 m2

that was subdivided into five areas the 30,000m2 for the glasshouse of which 2/3 was 8 meters tall and the other 1/3 was even 11 meters tall, the 4,600 m2 for the shipping area and warehouse in two parts, one for processing and storing incoming live and dead materials and one for

preparing outgoing plants that have been sold for shipment, the 750 m2 is for offices for administration and sales department and the 10,000 m2 for the parking space, and the remaining 9,000 m2 left for future expansion. It is operated since May 2000 called Nieuwkoop De Kwakel until December 31,2008 and on January 1,2009, the company was called Nieuwkoop Europe B.V. because people in other country don’t knew where is De Kwakel and it is hard for them to speak out De Kwakel. The company has a large commercial nursery with about 150 different species of plants imported from the various parts of the world. Some of them grown in the premises, other are bought from other various hydroponics nurseries. It created a very huge business network and exports a very broad range of plant to new fewer than twelve European countries like Germany, France and Switzerland are the major customers.

Nieuwkoop-Europe B.V. was the biggest buildings of all the company, which owned by Henk Nieuwkoop and was located in De Kwakel, which was centrally located with 4km away from the Aalsmeer Flower Auction where there are numerous customers, are present. This run through business to business. The company used hydroculture where the plants place in a soil less or grown using expanded clay. These business products demanded because of the uniqueness, having the highest quality, user-friendly, and easy to manage, just putting water with nutrients (as food) directly to the plants. Naturally, (Nieuwkoop Europe B.V.) their business is through importing cultivars, pots and other materials from the other country and so as producing and exporting them (in a hydro form) as pot plants grown through hydroponics and sophisticated items. Having the right business channels is very important to Nieuwkoop Europe B.V. as a trading company. The company has now branches in the different flower auctions in the Netherlands: Nieuwkoop Green Centre, the wholesale centre for florists and more, located in De Kwakel, at FloraHolland in Naaldwijk (Pyramide), Plantion in Ede, and in the other country in Bezons France. There the plants sold nationally and internationally. In addition, Nieuwkoop Europe has now four extra production locations near the company in De Kwakel and Aalsmeer. Unfortunately, one of the production locations burned last May 13, 2011 that all the plants turned into ashes. Also, Cultura nowadays doesn’t exist anymore since Nieuwkoop Green Centre started in October 2010.

SUMMARY / CONCLUSION

Within six month in Netherlands were the most precious days I had as a student. I observed many differences between Netherlands and Philippines in terms in agriculture, culture, weather, and seasons. The Netherlands is well-organized kingdom, well developed and well equipped. The Netherlands has the favorable environment with the support of the government, competitive agricultural sector, good entrepreneurial skills, support from a state-of-the-art agricultural research and education system, innovative supply and processing industries, the availability of inexpensive natural gas supporting greenhouse horticulture and floriculture as well as the production of cheap fertilizers and used biological control for controlling the insects that naturally occurs in Mother Nature. The great impact of having machineries and equipment’s to Dutch people is that their work become easier and not time consuming made their country as one of the major exporter of agricultural products especially in horticultural and agronomical products. Their technologies increases the production in which they made products as a competent to other countries all over the world by having there breeding laboratories and greenhouses, which introduces the new varieties that were undergo with special treatments and used automatic gadgets connected and manipulated by a computer. In terms of plants, they imported tropical plants from other countries which the companies of plants replanted them, made them more presentable for interior and exterior landscaping, putting them into the ceramics or shifting them to hydrocultured plants, and distributed them locally and internationally exported them to the neighboring countries of the kingdom to other continent of the world.

The Philippines is a developing country which has favorable environment for many crops in the whole year round but then the agricultural lands became smaller and smaller where the land used as residential subdivisions, resorts or industrial parks and golf courses. Some of the small landholders sell their land in exchange for cash since all the inputs and wages for hiring workers will cost lack of capital as well as for the fertilizers, seeds and pesticide. There is another concern that farmers’ continue using chemical-based fertilizers or pesticides that have destroy soil productivity. Because of this, agriculturist introduced organic fertilizer. There are few machineries and laboratories but still improper management of the plants, uncontrolled climate and there in opened field which favor for attacked by pest and diseases. The primary livelihood of the citizens is farming, fisheries, livestock, and forestry despite the plan that Philippines make it an industrialized economy since 2000. The great problem in the Philippines is the level of unemployment by the labour force, poverty and low level of education decided the teenagers enter into an early parenthood that increases the human population and unemployed citizens.

In terms of my practicum, I learned and experienced dealing with new technologies and collected information about hydrocultured plants, its process and the management. I concluded that this kind of cultivating plants will be demanded in the future even nowadays because most of the lands are covered with infrastructure, the increasing human population that causes to build houses in the agricultural lands and the buildings that contributing to the “ sick building syndrome “ cause by plastics tree, electric matters, and electronic because these materials produce carbon dioxide and formaldehyde, when it is mixed with water it is called formalin which is use to preserve or disinfectant that effects human health. The more effective air cleaners according to NASA is the hydroculture shows that 30 m2 room can be cleansed by 3 to 6 hydrocultured plants acting as natural pollution filters than the man-made air cleaners. In my leanings in the Netherlands, the best phrase I want to apply to my county is “Time is money “.

RECOMMENDATIONS

1. As a student and a Practicant, I recommended to the company where I worked that before thenext Practicant start of his/ her work in the 1st day or 1st week, please give time to have orientation to them so that they will know what are the activities that they are
