Letter from the RWE Communications DirectorJanith Norman

Hello Members,

I am excited to be the Communications Director for the Research on Women and Education’s SIG. In an effort to keep our members fully informed, I will take a proactive approach by taking full advantage of technology and using various ways to transmit information to our members. To that end, I will use the RWE LISTSERV to communicate information such as job announcements and other pertinent information. Maintaining an updated Web site with current information is a high priority. Another viable and informal vehicle of communication is Facebook. In the near future, I plan to establish a Facebook account for RWE so that our members can become better connected and informed of special events, issues, challenges, news and circumstances that concern and affect us as educators, researchers and scholars. I am confident this mode of communication will enhance existing relationships and facilitate others. Imagine how nice it would be to attend a conference and see someone in person that you have been chatting with on Facebook throughout the year. Certainly, it would add another dimension to the relationship and your experience during the conference.

Your input for future editions of the newsletter is desired. I invite all of you to submit information pertaining to exciting new projects, publications, promotions, professional events and conferences. If you are interested in writing a brief essay pertinent to research on women and education, please let me know. Do you have an idea about how to improve our newsletter or Web site? Well, tell me about that too.

Send all materials and submissions for inclusion in the newsletter to: Janith Norman Doctoral Candidate, ABD Saint Mary’s College of California E-mail address: [email protected] Phone: 707-374-6118

I look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia.

Introduction of RWE Board Introduction of Volunteers

Welcome from Dr. Jeanne Brady, Associate Dean of Education Saint Joseph’s University

Introduction to Women Educators

Women Educators Activist School Award: Community Women’s Education Project (CWEP)

Community Women's Education Project (CWEP) is a community-based education organization that was founded in Philadelphia in 1977 to address the social and economic inequities that affect at-risk families. For over thirty years CWEP has served as a gateway to self-sufficiency for vulnerable adults who are facing the challenges of low literacy skills, learning disabilities and failure in school and work-often coupled with mental health issues and drug and alcohol use.

A leader in the adult literacy community, CWEP provides a continuum of education programs, vital support services and connections to the workplace. Our strategies have enabled over 17,000 adults to prepare for and obtain employment that will sustain their families. Our 40,000 square foot historic facility in Kensington is a unique community resource that, in addition to CWEP's adult education programs and nationally accredited child care center, houses classes from the Willard Elementary School, a Head Start program and several other non-profit organizations.
