Grace Newman Research: When researching informaon to help me with my music video, many forms of media technology were used. An example of this, would be Google, I used google to research what I could work from and use to expand my knowledge of different music videos and especially the genre I was hoping to use. I also used Google to learn about Goodwin’s theory which helped widen my understanding of the convenons of a music video. In addion to Google, I also used YouTube in order to become familiar with the ‘indie’/ ‘pop’ genre in which I wanted to display. YouTube was also used for embedding music videos to my blog, prior to evaluaon. Again, this allowed me to watch videos of my chosen genre and intricately assess the ways in which everything in the video fits together and works for that genre. When trying to gain more of an insight on what our target audience would prefer our music video to be like, we created a survey on Survey Monkey which helped us with understanding the needs of our audience. Aſter analysing the results, we created a pie chart which informed us on what areas we needed to address. For example, the majority of our target audience preferred a music video that included the main arst in it, therefore we have made sure that our main character features throughout the video, along with another character at mes. I then published the results and feedback onto my Tumblr by embedding my document using SlideShare. Using SlideShare has helped me to maintain a sophiscated, dy looking blog. Sophie and I conducted addional research by gathering a focus group discussion. We chose students which were 16-18 years old, 50% male, 50% female from the Sixth-Form we aend as this was our perfect target audience and the opinions of the students would be very valuable and helpful to us when filming our video. We filmed the group discussion using a DSLR camera, this was the best way to obtain our data as it was least me consuming. Once the discussion was finished, we used Premier Pro to make slides saying what the quesons were that we asked the group, for example one of our quesons were ‘Where do you think a good locaon to film our music video would be?’ which would then follow with the footage of the groups answers. We then posted the discussion group footage onto YouTube and used the embed code to post the video onto my Tumblr blog. Planning: Once Sophie and I had deciding on the song we were going to use (Blame It On Me – George Ezra) we had to prepare a storyboard which would indicate to us the mings and order of each shot we were going to film. The storyboard consisted of drawings of the shots we used, how long the shot would take, if there was any dialogue and if there were any transacons between shots. The storyboard helped us to visualise what our video would look like and it gave us a solid base to work upon. Aſter finishing the storyboard, we then scanned in the storyboard and used paint to cut out the individual pictures in order to produce an animac, using Premier Pro. An animac is a mock-up of what our music video will look like, but instead of actual film footage, it will be the drawings from our storyboard. The photos would correspond with the beat of the song, presenng a realisc form of the music video. Which again follows Goodwin’s theory. Aſter creang our animac, we then uploaded it onto YouTube for other people to see what our music video will hopefully look like finished. We then embedded the link from YouTube and posted it onto my Tumblr blog. I explained how we had created the animac and why it will be a useful plaorm to use when filming our music video. It also gave me a chance to describe to the audience why we chose certain shots and why we thought the mings would work to the song.

Grace NewmanResearch:When researching information to help me with my music video, many forms of media technology were used. An example of this, would be Google, I used google to research what I could work from and use to expand my knowledge of different music videos and especially the genre I was hoping to use. I also used Google to learn about Goodwins theory which helped widen my understanding of the conventions of a music video. In addition to Google, I also used YouTube in order to become familiar with the indie/ pop genre in which I wanted to display. YouTube was also used for embedding music videos to my blog, prior to evaluation. After analysing the results, we created a pie chart which informed us on what areas we needed to address. For example, the majority of our target audience preferred a music video that included the main artist in it, therefore we have made sure that our main character features throughout the video, along with another character at times. I then published the results and feedback onto my Tumblr by embedding my document using SlideShare. Using SlideShare has helped me to maintain a sophisticated, tidy looking blog. Sophie and I conducted additional research by gathering a focus group discussion. We chose students which were 16-18 years old, 50% male, 50% female from the Sixth-Form we attend as this was our perfect target audience and the opinions of the students would be very valuable and helpful to us when filming our video. We filmed the group discussion using a DSLR camera, this was the best way to obtain our data as it was least time consuming. Once the discussion was finished, we used Premier Pro to make slides saying what the questions were that we asked the group, for example one of our questions were Where do you think a good location to film our music video would be? which would then follow with the footage of the groups answers. We then posted the discussion group footage onto YouTube and used the embed code to post the video onto my Tumblr blog. Planning:Once Sophie and I had deciding on the song we were going to use (Blame It On Me George Ezra) we had to prepare a storyboard which would indicate to us the timings and order of each shot we were going to film. The storyboard consisted of drawings of the shots we used, how long the shot would take, if there was any dialogue and if there were any transactions between shots. The storyboard helped us to visualise what our video would look like and it gave us a solid base to work upon. After finishing the storyboard, we then scanned in the storyboard and used paint to cut out the individual pictures in order to produce an animatic, using Premier Pro. An animatic is a mock-up of what our music video will look like, but instead of actual film footage, it will be the drawings from our storyboard. The photos would correspond with the beat of the song, presenting a realistic form of the music video. Which again follows Goodwins theory. After creating our animatic, we then uploaded it onto YouTube for other people to see what our music video will hopefully look like finished. We then embedded the link from YouTube and posted it onto my Tumblr blog. I explained how we had created the animatic and why it will be a useful platform to use when filming our music video. It also gave me a chance to describe to the audience why we chose certain shots and why we thought the timings would work to the song. In addition to producing the animatic, I also took a variety of location shots where we thought would be appropriate to film out music video, this also allowed me to visualise what our video would look like and how the location would represent the genre. Once we had finished planning our music video and what we would like it to look like, we had to create a digipak and poster. The planning of the video helped with thinking of creative ideas for my digipak and poster. As our character is portrayed as having two separate lives and wanting to be in the countryside, I decided that it would be appropriate to portray this in my digipak. Construction:When filming our music video, I found it easier than my preliminary and I was familiar with the DSLR camera that was provided. This camera allowed us to enhance our footage, more so than a camcorder would. Therefore our footage was manipulated by the quality, focus and depth of field that were created by the camera we used. In many of our shots, we wanted our main character to be in focus and the background less so. We achieved this by making sure our character stayed in the correct position and frame, and then focused the camera on him with a wide aperture and shallow depth of field. Which then blurred the wider picture. We used this effect majorly in the city locations as this is where we wanted our character to seem less entitled to have fun in. Therefore the blurred background gives the audience a distorted image of where he is playing. After we had filmed the majority of our video, we then imported it onto Premier Pro and started to edit the footage. When we first started editing the video, we only used one video layer. However, after experimenting, we preferred the video being on more than one layer as this allowed us to lay clips of the video over other clips. For example, if we had a clip that was too long on its own, we would use another video layer placed in the middle of the first clip, then when we played it back, the footage would jump from one location, to another. As a group, we thought this was effective as it allowed the audience to recognise where the main character wanted to be. We used many tools in Premier Pro such as: Razor tool - to separate a clip into different sections. Crop tool - to shorten a clip and to fit it in time with our soundtrack. Colour balance to enhance some clips as a minority of clips werent the right contrast or brightness that we wanted. For example we changed the colour of our imagination shots and changed the contrast too to make it more distinguishable to our target audience. We also used cross dissolve many times to make the cuts between clips more smooth and professional looking. We wanted to create the effect of time passing. We achieved this by filming our character for a few minutes in the same position and then speeding up the clip. After we had completed our first couple of drafts, we posted them on YouTube. We decided to do this to gain verbal feedback from peers and from our target audience. After receiving some constructive criticism, we took the advice of altering a few parts of this vide, this included: Adding filters over the imagination shots, making a few of the cuts shorter and replacing the time with additional shots and finally, reshooting the ending to make it more obvious that the girl was in the boys imagination. When creating my digipak, I used Photoshop to edit the photos and provide a professional outcome. I decided on overlapping two photos to portray the character being in two different worlds. I did this by taking a photo in the countryside, and one in the city. I then enlarged the city photo to make it just the main characters head and shoulders, then I cut the country side photo to mould to the head of the city photo. I changed the opacity of both photos to make the countryside photo stand out more so it covered the characters head. The effect I wanted to create is for the audience to understand that the photo inside the characters head is where he wants to be and also where his imagination takes place. In the process of creating my poster, I kept the idea of having it in black and white. I wanted to continue on from my digipak design and keep the theme consistent. Therefore this made the editing of the poster very similar to the editing of my digipak, which was helpful as I had become very familiar with the concept of PhotoShop and I knew the tools that were most appropriate to use in order to convey the story of our main character. For my poster, I decided to take a picture of the guitar that is featured throughout our video with the main character. I took the photo of the guitar in a dark surrounding in order to emphasise the importance of the guitar. Additionally, the photo makes the guitar look isolated, much like our main character throughout the music video.
