Early research (1980-1990) studies at Cairo University on the micro-emulsion system phase behavior of some commercial surfactant with Egyptian crude oils and their applications in tertiary oil recovery under Egyptian reservoir conditions were started.
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
Later, this work was extended to oil recovery by alkaline water flooding. On this subject some new results were found and published in Revue de L Institute Frances du Petrole(France) .
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
Some projects were:
-Phase behavior of some micro-emulsion systems and the effect of external phase on oil recovery
-Displacement of Abo-Sanan crude oil under secondary and tertiary conditions by surfactant solutions
-Enhanced recovery of South Geisum crude oil by alkaline water flooding
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
-The rheological properties of Egyptian crude oils
-Enhanced recovery of Ras Budran crude oil under secondary and tertiary conditions by Witco Trs-18 surfactant solution
-Improved recovery of West Bakr crude oil by hot water and chemical solutions
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
Research work at King Saud University(1989-1993) a new EOR laboratory was established. A laboratory and simulation research of EOR for Saudi oil fields by surfactant and polymer flooding funded by SANCST was finished.
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
Investigation of the process of alkaline waterfloodingunder Saudi reservoir conditions was carried out.
A series of research work on the effects of clay content, polar compounds in Saudi crude, alkaline additives, temperature, drilling fluids and microorganisms on rock wettability were performed.
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
The outcome of the results were published in the Journal of Japan Petroleum Institute (Japan), J. Petroleum Science and Engineering (USA), Oil- Gas European Magazine (Germany).

Equations to correlate oil viscosity with temperature, pressure and composition; gas viscosity with pressure and temperature; sulfur percent with crude API and viscosity; and tertiary oil recovery by chemical solutions with chemical costs and cash money were developed and published in Oil and Gas Journal, Petroleum Engineer International, and J. Eng. Costs and Production Economics (USA).

During 1990s and 2000s a new micro-organisms laboratory for MEOR which was the first in the Arab World was established. The project set a new MEOR process for Arabian oil recovery with using bacteria from crude oils and formation waters obtained from Egyptian oil reservoirs.
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
Some projects were:
-Theoretical and experimental studies on microbial enhanced recovery of oil.
-Effect of stimulating indigenous bacteria on interfacial forces and phase variation of crude oil-brine system .
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
-Role of indigenous bacteria in crude oil reservoirs on relative permeability curves .
-A methodology for increasing oil recovery using a remedial separated bacteria of harsh petroleum reservoir conditions .
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
Some technical articles on this subject have been published in the International Journal of Adhesion Science (USA), SPE of AIME, ,Oil-Gas European Magazine (Germany), J. Petroleum Science & Eng. (USA), and a chapter in the book entitled" Microbial Enhanced Recovery" Published by Elsevier in 1993.
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
An expert system for EOR method selection was developed and published in SPE of AIME.
Research work on simulation of steam flooding and improving well test results using data management have been completed.
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
Later, micellar, surfactant, alkaline, and polymer solutions studies -enhanced recovery processes-modeling and reservoir simulation- studies on reservoir porosity, permeability, and rock wettability, and gas condensate reservoir simulation studies... etc. were performed.
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
Investigation of the effects of alkali and polymer on the phase behavior of some available surfactants at high salinity conditions. The Phase relations were obtained after equilibrium at reservoir temperature. New results were obtained and published in Revue de L Institute Francais du Pet role (France).
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
The crude-brine phase variation, interfacial forces, rock wettability of oil-water systems (under reservoir conditions of pressure, temperature and formation water salinity) with microorganisms were investigated.
Petroleum Engineering - Cairo University
Recently, the research team succeeded in producing a new generation of microorganism that can be used in oil fields under harsh conditions of temperature and water salinity.
