Lead by Service – Lead by Example
Ingham ISD is…
• a service organization for greater Ingham County
NOT the parent organization for consortium districts• Each district maintains complete autonomy
• Committed to collaboration and cohesion across districts
• Focused on translating research data into practice
• Providing meaningful learning to students, parents, teachers, and administrators
• Accountable to making an impact on student outcomes
Example – ARRA Funds 2009
• American Recovery and Reinvestment Act• Pooled funds from all 12 districts to create a model for sustainable support
• On-site district/school RtI Coaches• Provided training in universal screening and progress monitoring• Commitment to evidence-based practice• Virtual elimination of “One and Done” Professional Development
• Created an “All Ed” model of instruction and intervention• Operationalized collaboration between local districts and Ingham ISD

Elevator Speech • Brief summary of a potential project • 30 seconds or less to sell your idea to a potential administrator• Key points:
• Who are you?• What is the project? How long is it? Will it cost the school money? • What makes school X a desirable place for this project• What is the benefit to your “buyer?” – Why should they care? • Keep background information trim and slim
• Let’s practice1. 5-minutes: prepare your speech2. Practice with a partner (someone unfamiliar to you)
More Low Hanging Fruit – Ripe Opportunities • Secondary Data Analysis• Professional Development• Analysis of Curriculum & Permanent Products• Intervention Studies
Substantive Barriers • High School Schedule
• Returning to recently abandoned programs
• Programs that contrast with Key Initiatives• Example: Positive Behavior Supports & Zero Tolerance
• Additional working hours for staff• Tradition• Politics
Building SupportBe respectful of leadership roles & t0alk to individuals at all levels
Clearly explain the potential for improving practice- What are the benefits to students? - How will practice change based on the results of the study?- Operationalize the impact of the results
Provide the Cost Benefit Analysis-Make it very clear why your study is worth the inconvenience-Be candid and transparent with the possible drawbacks
Develop a Communication Plan
Lack of communication between of relevant information to all stakeholders can be a deal-breaker
How will you communicate with the appropriate individuals?
What is the timeline for communication?
Make requested tasks as specific as possible
How to sweeten the deal for schools
• Early access to the data – (don’t make them read about in a journal)
• Collect data that is mutually useful (maybe more than you planned)• Offer to help teachers and administrators interpret the findings and
understand the implications for practice• Communicate about next steps (especially at the conclusion of data
collection)
Recent Successful Projects
• Reading Comprehension Assessment study (FCRR)
• Analysis of Reading & Math CBM data and state assessments (MSU)
• Behavior Management for Technology-Rich Classrooms (Oregon)
• Classroom EBP and Autism (MSU)
On the Horizon• Streamlined application process for
doing research within Ingham ISD Single Application for all Schools
• Annual/Semi-Annual Research to practice events
• Direct involvement of Ingham ISD staff in development, data collection, and analysis
• Collaboration on grant proposals

Business • Roberta Perconti – Director, Student Instructional Services• Andrew Rable – Director, Student Support Services • Susan Tinney – Director, Human Resources• Daryl Tilley – Director, Information Technology Services• Micki O’Neil – Director, Public Relations and Communications
