PAPER DUE!Hard copy in class AND electronically to turnitin.comIn Gehres’s room

21

Anything in BOLD is a due date, meaning it is an assignment worth points. If any due date is missed for any reason (absent/snow), the assignment is due the very next day at school. If any research days are missed (absent/snow) they will not be made up in class; you would need to complete the research in your own time.

Once the paper is due, for every day that it is missing, it will be -10%. These days include weekends/spring break. So if you miss the due date, papers can be submitted to turnitin.com or be emailed to Ms. Shilling (in .rtf format) at [email protected] in order to get it turned in as soon as possible. Papers, however, will not actually be graded until a hard copy is turned in that comments can be written on.

Extra-credit Opportunity : You are required to use books as some of your resources. If you go to your local library and reserve your own books, you will earn 5pts of extra-credit per book for as many as 3 books. That’s up to 15 bonus pts!Sharing books in the school library will not be easy for all topics, so having your own books will be very helpful!

Last day to show Ms. Shilling books for extra-credit will be Wednesday March 5th.

** On these days, you’re welcome to bring headphones to listen to music while you work.

Using EBSCOhostScholarly Journals are the most reliable resources you could use on the internet.

Even if you have a topic that gets blocked, it will still be researchable on a scholarly journal search engine.

Go to http://www.infohio.org (note: there is only one “o” in the middle)

To login at home: username is infohiopassword is power

Click on “Core Collection”

Click on “Ebsco Host All Database Search”

Select the boxes for:Funk & Wagnalls New World EncyclopediaMas UltraMasterFile

Then scroll to the bottom and click “Continue”

BEFORE you click “Search”Limit the results by clicking “Full Text”This way, it will only give you full articlesthat are full of informationThen type what you’re looking forand click “Search”

Search Tips* Use an asterisk (*) to finish the root of a word and then find different variations of that word.

Example: Searching for ethic* will help you find ethic, ethics, ethical, ethically, etc.

* In most databases under advanced search, you can choose “AND”, “OR”, and “NOT” to differentiate between search lines.

Page 6: Research - Triad High School PACKET.doc  · Web view* Use an asterisk (*) to finish the root of a word and then find different variations of that word. Example: Searching for ethic*

Selecting “AND” will narrow down your results because it will look for search term 1 AND search term 2. Selecting “OR” will broaden results because it will look for search term 1 OR search term 2. Selecting “NOT” will eliminate results with that search item.

For example, if you want to find information on ravens but keep getting items about the NFL team, you could search “Ravens NOT football NOT Baltimore.”

*Try a subject search. If you find an article that looks useful to you, look at the subject terms listed under the article and select the hyperlink to search for articles with that subject term.

Page 7: Research - Triad High School PACKET.doc  · Web view* Use an asterisk (*) to finish the root of a word and then find different variations of that word. Example: Searching for ethic*

Outline SuggestionsThe first thing you need to do is get to know your topic well enough so you can break it down into 4 more

specific topics. These will become the focus of each body paragraph.

On the outline you need to write complete sentences explaining the information.“The specific focus of this paragraph will be”: explain the category your going to focus on and explain what kind of information will be going into this category.“The type of information that will be included in this paragraph is”: explain what kind of information this paragraph will have AND how this category relates to your overall topic. Does it lead to a lot of other things that happened? Is it the most important aspect of your topic?

At the beginning of each body paragraph (Body#1:_________) you need to create a simple 1-2 word nickname for the paragraph category that you explained in the sentences.

Suggested nicknames for breaking down your paragraphs into separate focuses:

If your topic is a PERSON: Babe Ruth, Al Capone, Shirley Temple, John Dillinger, Amelia Earhart, Rise of Ford, etc

ChildhoodEarly LifeCareerAccomplishmentsPresidencyPersonal LifeCrimeDeathLegacy

If your topic is a COURT CASE: Sacco and Vanzetti, Scopes, Scottsboro, Teapot Dome Scandal, etcBackground (on people being prosecuted)CrimeArrestsEvidenceProsecutionDefenseVerdictTrial AftermathTheory Explanation

If your topic is a HISTORICAL HAPPENING: KKK, Red Scare, Prohibition, Suffrage, Black Tues, Dust Bowl, etcHistory TimelineOriginsPeople InvolvedIdeas or Mindsets of the timeWWI or WWII InfluenceCountries InvolvedLawsEffectsStatisticsBehaviorLiteratureAgricultureEconomy

These are merely SUGGESTIONS. YOU need to decide how it would be best to break your specific topic down into focuses for paragraphs. Also be aware of what order your putting the paragraphs. The best way to order the paper would be organize the paragraph topics based on chronological / sequential order, order of importance, or cause and effect.

NOTE ON RELIABLE RESOURCESAny resource that is legitimate will make it clear by providing the information needed for a citation.

*The Author / Sponsoring Institution must be reputable. If you are missing more than two pieces of information needed for a citation, then do NOT use that resource.

NOTE ON IN-TEXT CITATIONSThe full citation is only on the Bibliography page. Anytime you refer to a resource inside the paper, it needs an in-text citation. So, you need to know the specific page / paragraph number each specific piece of information came from.

An in-text citation is in parenthesis at the end of the sentence you used the information in.An in-text citation needs only two things inside the parenthesis:

1-Author / if not known, Title2-Page / Paragraph number

So it would look:With an author: “Here is a quote” (Smith 21).Without an author for a book: “Here is a quote” (Book Title 352).Without an author for a webpage: “Here is a quote” (“Article Title” 3).

*In-text citations without knowing the author keep whatever grammar is required for the title. Books = underlined. Internet Articles = “in quotation marks.”*If there is no author and the Title is very long, then you can condense it down to 2-3 words that would still be recognizable as the same source.

Set-up of Note CardsThe point of using note cards for research is so you can organize the information as you conduct the research.

This way, all of your information is already organized and ready to be used in a paper. Also, you should write the majority of the info simplified in your own words.

The most important method of organizing notes is to keep all the information from each resource together

Each resource will have its own pile, starting with a title card

Only 2 things go on a TITLE NOTE CARD:

*A number in the top right-hand corner. This is just to show how many resourcesyou have

*The citation of the resource in the middle. This needs to be written according to theMLA citation format

Now that you’ve created a title card for each resource, it will be followed by information cards coming from that source. This will be broken into topics. Some sources won’t have information for every topic. That’s OK.

4 things go on every INFORMATION CARD:

*A number in the top right-hand corner. This correlates with the title card, lettingyou know which resource this information came from

*A topic in the top left-hand corner. You will already know your body paragraphs, this topic will be one of your body topics

*InformationYou should bullet point the information, andcondense as much of it as possible. If you ever write something word-for-word from the source, make sure you put it in quotation marks

*You will need 2 quotes for this paper

*The page number / paragraph numberFor every single bullet point of information, writedown the specific page that information came from. For internet resources, you will need to count which paragraph the information came from

Double-check you did it correctly:For every piece of information, you will need to know the following in order to use it in your paper:

1-The source it came from written in MLA format (number in top right-hand corner)2-Which body paragraph of your paper it belongs in (topic in top left-hand corner)3-Whether or not it’s a direct quote (use quotation marks on cards when needed)4-What page/paragraph it came from (listed at the end of every single piece of information)

Explain a General Topic: 100 word minimumYou have to find a general topic that is related to your specific topic. It must be a general enough topic that you can spend a full introduction explaining it, and then at the end of the paragraph you’ll explain how it relates to your specific topic.

REMEMBER, the following sections will come together to make a solid paragraph. So make sure you do not repeat yourself going from one section to another.ALSO, this is a formal paper, so make sure you only write in 3rd person, never narrate yourself, don’t include opinions, etc.

Introduce Topic of Paragraph: 1-4 sentencesThis should very directly introduce and explain the topic for this specific body paragraph.Poe is practically the founding father of the American Short Story. “Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective-fiction genre,” which mystery and death were the most common themes in his stories” (Miller 32).

Evidence for Paragraph: 150 word minimumThis is where all the facts and information goes. All you’re doing is presenting facts (with in-text citations at the end of the sentences) and then explaining it in your own words between each fact. The entire paragraph needs to flow, so don’t just list a bunch of facts; make sure you EXPLAIN how they are all related.Poe picked a difficult time to become a writer in American History. There was no copy write laws in place during the 1800s (“Poe’s Life” 2). This means that Poe would not necessarily always get credit for what he wrote. Without copy write, it would be possible for other writers to put their name on his stories. But this did not stop Poe, by the time he was 21 years old, he had published over 17 short stories (Bailey 837). One of his most famous short stories is “The Black Cat.” The story’s plot consists of a crazed man that kills his entire family, and he would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for the fact he accidentally enclosed a cat behind a wall with the dead bodies. So when the police came to investigate, the cat’s meowing led them to the dead bodies. This story was published in 1849 as Poe’s eighth story (Find Poe 77). He wrote three stories before this one that resembled “The Black Cat.” It is apparent that it took Poe multiple tries with the same story line until he was finally pleased with the result. Other stories Poe is well-known for consist of: “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” and “The Masque of the Red Death” (Stroker 1). By the end of his career, Poe had won multiple literary awards. The most significant award is the National Book Award (Dafoe 483). This award is only presented to writer’s that achieve a style of writing that had never been done before.

Wrap-up: 1-2 sentencesThis is where you remind the reader what the purpose of this Body paragraph was.Even though Poe’s stories are full of pain and death, that will never change the fact that he is still one of the most influential writers of all time.

Transition: 1-2 sentencesThis should directly connect the topic of this paragraph to the idea of the paragraph that came before.DO NOT COMPLETE THIS SECTION YET. We will do all the transitions once all your Body Paragraphs are done.Unfortunately the D-Day invasion was not only fought on the sea, it was also waged through aerial means.

Introduce Topic of Paragraph: 1-4 sentencesThis should very directly introduce and explain the topic for this specific body paragraph. Two hours after the Normandy Landing began, the troops began to arrive by plane (Crosch 2). These airborne operations had just as large of an impact on the outcome of this invasion as any other tactical approach used by the military that day.

Evidence for Paragraph: 150 word minimumThis is where all the facts and information goes. All you’re doing is presenting facts (with in-text citations at the end of the sentences) and then explaining it in your own words between each fact. The entire paragraph needs to flow, so don’t just list a bunch of facts; make sure you EXPLAIN how they are all related. Before the air force troops arrived at Normandy, it was unclear as to which side was going to win the encounter. The ground forces “were especially vulnerable to strong enemy counterattacks before the build up of sufficient forces in the beachhead could be accomplished” (D-Day, a Tragedy 84). In other words, if it were not for the American troops that came by air, it is possible the Germans would have taken control of the beach before the Americans were able to. At the time of the airborne landings, the Germans did have control of the Western beach. Therefore, the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions landed on the Eastern portion of the beach between the Orne and Dives Rivers (Crosch 14). They were shortly joined by the British 6th Airborne Division, which was finally the tipping point as to which side was going to win this battle (“D-Day” 9). When the British arrived, it finally tipped the scale in the allies favor. There were finally more British and American troops than there were Germans. Although over 7,000 Airborne Paratroopers had to give their lives in this battle, there presence was necessary in order to win the battle (Crosch 26).

Wrap-up: 1-2 sentencesThis is where you remind the reader what the purpose of this Body paragraph was.D-Day will always be remembered as one of the bloodiest battles of all time, but it is important to remember all the different kinds of strategies that were required for the victory the Americans achieved. The Army and Navy both had their place in this battle, however, the Air Force should be recognized as the most influential tactical force used at the D-Day Invasion.

Example

Bad Example:

Franklin D. Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882. He attended Harvard College and worked at the

school’s newspaper while he was there. When he became president in 1933 the United States was already

experiencing the Great Depression. He created the New Deal to help the United States out of its economic

turmoil. The New Deal was a set of programs designed to help the economy. It was able to do so because it

was helping reverse the amount of job loss that was created from the Stock Market crash as well as reform the

way the stock market functions. World War II was a time that Franklin was able to prove that America could

remain neutral, which made our country stronger at the time. He was president for many years, and eventually

had to deal with the attack on Pearl Harbor. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1945.

What’s wrong with it?

Good Example:

Even though Franklin Roosevelt had to deal with the most detrimental world war that had been

experienced up to that point, he definitely left the United States with a positive opinion of him. This positive

opinion was mostly developed on the basis of the New Deal programs he put into place during the Great

Depression. By reversing job loss and reforming the way the stock market functions, he was able to help the

United States, not only survive the Great Depression, but pull its economy out of those devastating times. He

proved his extraordinary ability as president again during the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Even when the United

States was feeling vulnerable and weak, he remained strong and pulled the country through. It’s unfortunate he

died so unexpectedly after spending twelve years as the President of the United States. However, despite all of

the bad experiences his country had during his terms, she will never forget all the positive things he did for her.

Transition: 1-2 sentences. How is your topic from the last paragraph so important to your overall topic? Explaining that would create a transition._________________________________________________________________________________________________

Recap the Main Ideas: 80 word minimumThere are only 3 main rules for a conclusion:

1- Do not include any NEW information. Unless it was a fact or idea that was thoroughly described somewhere in your paper, then it should not be in the conclusion.

2- Only recap the main IDEAS. There is no point in recapping specific facts again. The point of the conclusion is to look back on the biggest ideas of the paper and to recap why they are important.

3- Do not sound repetitive. This is the hardest part, because you can only cover things you already covered. But you need to make sure you don’t phrase things the same way you have before. In the conclusion you need to make overall comparisons and observations about your topic. This broader outlook on your topic is how you can make it sound new.

Conclusion Sentence: 1-2 sentencesYou can always finish a paper in a couple of ways:

1- Specifically making it clear exactly why the topic of the paper is so important.Example: D-Day will always be considered one of the most influential days of all time. This is why Americans should be

proud of what they were able to accomplish with their hard work, intelligence, and dedication.2- Leave the reader with an interesting thought that is brought about from your specific topic.

Example: D-Day was a single moment from history that has effected every single day that came after it. Thankfully, the United States will never have to face the question, what if we wouldn’t have won that day?
