20th Century Fox is a film corporation which is one of the 6 major American film studios. The organisation was founded in 1935 hand has become the most recognised film institution in the world. the studio is a subsidiary of News Corporation, the media conglomerate owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Some of the most successful films created by 20th Century Fox are: Avatar/ Star Wars/ Speed & The Chronicles of Narnia.

The majority of popular and successful films that 20th Century Fox created are Comedy an Family genre films, for example: Alvin and the Chipmunks/ Doctor Do-little/ Night at the Museum and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

As I am producing a Horror film I have to research weather 20th Century Fox would be a suitable Institution to Produce my film with.

Although 20th Century Fox prefer to make Comedy/ Fantasy and Family films because the seem to be the most profitable films, they also create Horror films, such as: From Hell (Distributors) (which has very similar narrative as my horror film), Alien(Produced), The Omen(Produced), Jennifer's Body(Distributors), The Haunting of Molly Hartley(Distributors) and Shutter (Distributors).

When it comes to Horror films, 20th Century Fox prefers to distribute them rather than produce them, so if I was to pick 20th Century Fox as the best intuitions for my film I would get them to distribute my horror film worldwide.

Warner Bros is another one of the main film studios based in California and New York. Warner Bros Is a global leader in the creation, production, distribution, licensing and marketing of all forms of creative content and their related businesses, across all current and emerging media and platforms.

Some of the most popular films created by Warner Bros Fox are: Harry Potter(Producers & Distributors), Valentine’s Day(Distributers), Sex and the City(Distributers), The Hangover(Producers & Distributers), The Dark Knight(Producers & Distributors) and Slumdog Millionaire(Distributors).

Warner Bros Produce and Distribute a variety of films in different genres, from Comedy, Romance, Fantasy, Adventure, Action and Horror.

Warner Bros are dedicated to producing a variety of films to suit different type of audience and in my case most of my favorite film have been made my Warner Bros.

To help me with my research on what institution would suit best to create my horror film I have to research what horror films Warner Bros have created and weather they were successful or not.

After researching what horror movie Warner Bros had been involved in producing or distributing I compared it to 20th Century Fox and noticed that Warner brothers had produced more well-known and successful horror films than 20th Century Fox has over the years. This is because 20th Century Fox like to mainly focus on the same genre films that give them more success (Comedy/Fantasy/Family) on the other hand Warner Bros Like to experiment with different genres and attract a wider variety of viewers.

Some of the best horror films that Warner Bros have created are as followed: Orphan(Producers & Distributors), Friday the 13th(Distributors), One Missed Call(Distributors), Sweeney Todd(Producers & Distributors), The Wicker Man(Producers & Distributors), House of Wax(Producers & Distributors).

The list of well-known film Warner Bros has produced and distributed is much longer than the 20th Century Fox list, which means if I was to choose between the two on which would be more suitable to produce and distribute my film with is Warner Bros as they have more experience with Horror Genre which means they would make better success out of my film.

Universal Pictures also called Universal Studios is a subsidiary of NBC Universal, and one of the six major movie studios. It was founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, it is one of the oldest American movie studios still in continuous production. Universal Pictures creates and distributes theatrical and non-theatrical filmed entertainment.

Universal has achieved both popular success and its recent Academy Award winners: Atonement, The Bourne Ultimatum, King Kong, Brokeback Mountain, Ray, A Beautiful Mind, The Pianist, and Lost in Translation. Like 20th Century Fox, Universal Picture prefer to create films focus on Drama, Romance and Adventure, such as the films listed above. The reason most of their films are based around this genre is because those genre films are their most successful and they prefer not to risk creating other genres out of their comfort zone and for than film to them fail.

After doing that background research I now need to research what Universal Pictures is like when making horror film. I need to know weather they have made many successful horror films or is it one of their weaker points.

Some of the well-known horror film created or distributed by Universal Pictures are as followed: Drag Me to Hell(Produced & Distributors), The Strangers(Distributors), Dead Silence(Universal Pictures) and Dracula(Produced).

As you can see after my research on horror films that Universal Pictures created, the result wasn’t as promising as the Warner Bros, the amount and experience they had on horror films is much bigger compared to Universal Pictures.

If I was to choose which institution out of the ones I have researched (20th Century Fox / Warner Bros & Universal Pictures) would be more suitable and experience to produce and distribute my horror film is still Warner Bros.

Lionsgate is a Canadian entertainment company. It was formed in Vancouver, but is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. As of 2007, it is the most commercially successful independent film and television distribution company in North America. They produce and distribute motion pictures, television programming, home entertainment and family entertainment.

Some of the most popular films created by Warner Bros Fox are: Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail, which generated a $41 million opening weekend, largest in Lionsgate history, Kick Ass(Distributors), Religulous(Distributors), Forbidden Kingdom(Distributors), Rambo(Producers & Distributors) and The Bank Job(Distributors).

After doing some background research on Lionsgate, I noticed that the majority of their film were of similar genres and the genres they prefer to produce or distributed are Drama, Action and Thrillers.

Horror films are also produce quite often by Lionsgate, some maybe better known and gained more success than others. The best horrors that Lionsgate has produced or distributed are: Saw 3D(Distributors), Saw 1/2/3/4/5/6 (Distributors), The Last Exorcism(Distributors), My Bloody Valentine(Production & Distribution) and The Eye(Producers and Distributors).

Lionsgate has only had successful horror films the last 5 years and they have not produced many, all of the horror films above are their only successful horrors in the last 5 years.

After researching horror films from Lionsgate, I discovered that horror was not their strongest points when making or distributing films. The reason this information is needed is so I can decide weather this film institution is suitable to create my horror film. From the information I have gathered I do not think this institution is the best for producing or distributing my product as I think they do not have enough experience in creating successful and memorable horror films.

Hammer is a film production company based in the UK. It was founded in 1934, the company is best known for a series of Gothic Horror films produced between the mid-1950s until the 1970s. During the late 1960s and 1970s the intensity of the horror film market was so competitive that Hammer lost the American funding, which led to the institution closing down in 1980s. The company then in 2000 announced plans to begin making films again but none were produced until May 2007.

As you may have notice the previous 4 institutions I researched were all American apart from this one. I wanted to do some research on a British film company to then be able to compare it to my previous American. When looking for a British company to research I came across Hammer Films.

Hammer Films was a great institution to use as they are focus all their production of horror films. Some of their best produced and well-known films are: The Curse Of Frankenstein(1957), Dracula(1958), The Mummy(1959) and The Phantom of the Opera(1962).

Comparing this British institution with the four previous American institutions, Hammer is decently a smaller film company than the others. 20th Century Fox/ Warner Bros/ Universal & Lionsgate are all huge successful companies which have been running continuously for a long time, unlike Hammer. Another difference between the American companies and Hammer is that Hammer is better when producing Impendent films and the American companies always produce Mainstream films. Also Hammer Films only focuses on producing Horror films unlike the big American Institution they create a variety of genres to please different types of audience.

Out of the five companies I have chosen would be the best to represent and produce my horror film is Hammer Films. The reason I prefer Hammer Films is firstly because they have the best experience with dealing and creating my genre of film (Horror), they also create small independent films which would be cheaper to produce but yet still very good quality as Hammer Films are specialised with the horror genre, which means they would use the right convections, settings, characters, etc, for my type of Horror and Narrative.
